Cheap flights to Manado, between green hills and the Celebes Sea
Manado is the capital of North Sulawesi and the main gateway to the north of the island. It sits on a bay backed by mountains and facing the Celebes Sea, and with 451,916 inhabitants at the 2020 census it is the second-largest city of Sulawesi after Makassar. Its world reputation rests on the nearby Bunaken National Marine Park, one of the best-known diving sites on the planet.
It is also known for its Christian-majority population, which is rare in Indonesia, visible in its many churches and lively Sunday markets. Travel guides describe a city of waterfront scenery, historic neighbourhoods and religious architecture rather than big monuments, and an excellent base for the sea and the highlands around it.
Airport and distances
Sam Ratulangi Airport and trips around Manado
Sam Ratulangi International Airport
The airport lies about 13 km north-east of the city (German Wikipedia) and is roughly 30 minutes away (Wikivoyage). It has domestic flights to Jakarta, Makassar, Denpasar and Surabaya, and international links to Singapore (about 3 hours), Guangzhou and Kunming.
From the airport you can take a taxi, a shared minibus (mikrolet), a ride-hailing app such as Grab, which has a pick-up zone at the airport, or a DAMRI bus. Allow about 30 minutes. Fares are low, in the order of a hundred thousand rupiah for a taxi (Wikivoyage, to be checked), so agree on the price before getting in if the cab has no meter.
Bunaken and day trips
Bunaken is reached by boat from Manado harbour: 30 to 45 minutes by private boat, 60 to 90 minutes by public boat, which leaves around 14:00 and does not run on Sundays (Wikivoyage). Tomohon is 45 minutes to an hour by road, Tangkoko reserve is about 50 km away (1 to 2 hours), and the Lembeh Strait is reached through Bitung, with a short crossing by boat.
| Landmark | Indicative distance or time |
|---|---|
| Airport to the centre | about 13 km; about 30 minutes |
| Manado harbour to Bunaken | 30 to 45 minutes by private boat, 1 to 1.5 hours by public boat |
| Manado to Tomohon | about 45 minutes to 1 hour |
| Manado to Tangkoko | about 50 km; 1 to 2 hours |
| Manado to Bitung and Lembeh | about 1.5 hours by road, then a short boat crossing |
Bunaken
Diving Bunaken, the coral walls of the Celebes Sea
Created as a national park in 1991
Bunaken National Park covers about 890 km2, of which 97% is sea, near the centre of the Coral Triangle. It holds some 390 coral species and about 2,000 species of fish, and its signature is a vertical coral wall 25 to 50 m high. The park is made up of five islands, including Bunaken, Siladen and the cone of Manado Tua, an inactive volcano rising over 600 m. Snorkellers and divers find outstanding biodiversity; the beaches are on the park's islands rather than in town.

Around Manado
Lembeh, Tomohon and Tangkoko: three trips away from the coast
| Destination | Getting there | What for |
|---|---|---|
| Lembeh Strait | Road to Bitung, then a boat crossing | Muck diving, famed for rare and bizarre small marine creatures |
| Tomohon | 45 minutes to 1 hour by road | Cooler volcanic highlands with Lake Linow, Mount Lokon (1,580 m) and the Beriman market |
| Tangkoko | 1 to 2 hours by road | Reserve with macaques and tiny tarsiers in the wild |
At Tomohon, the Beriman market opens early and includes an "extreme market" selling unusual meats such as bat and snake (Wikivoyage), an experience that some visitors find upsetting. The Bukit Kasih prayer site near Tomohon welcomes believers of all of Indonesia's religions (German Wikipedia).
Monuments
Chinese temple, Christ statue and waterfront
Ban Hin Kiong temple
Established in 1819 according to Wikipedia, it is described as the oldest temple in Manado and, by German Wikipedia, as the oldest Buddhist temple in eastern Indonesia. It stands in Chinatown and draws crowds at Chinese New Year.
Christ Blessing statue
It overlooks the Citraland district; Wikipedia calls it the second tallest statue of Christ in Asia, without giving a height.
Boulevard and Soekarno Bridge
Manado Boulevard (Jalan Pierre Tendean) runs along the waterfront with cafes, restaurants and malls, facing the cone of Manado Tua. The cable-stayed Soekarno Bridge is best at sunset or after dark (Wikivoyage).
Museums and heritage
A provincial museum, waruga tombs and a colonial past
North Sulawesi Provincial Museum
The Museum Negeri Sulawesi Utara covers history, archaeology and Minahasan culture, with traditional costumes and household objects (Wikivoyage, German Wikipedia). It is the one to remember for a rainy day.
Waruga tombs
Waruga are the stone sarcophagi of the Minahasa. The Sawangan cemetery holds 144 of them, 24 km from the city (French Wikipedia), and another site lies at Airmadidi (German Wikipedia).
Few museums, many landscapes
Manado is not a city of great museums: plan a few hours at the provincial museum, then spend the rest of your stay on the sea and in the highlands. Opening hours and entry fees change, so check on the spot.
A crossroads
Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch
Portuguese and then Spanish presence is recorded from the 16th century; Spanish Wikipedia mentions a Portuguese settlement in 1623, the date German Wikipedia gives for the founding of the town. The Dutch East India Company built a fort in 1658, and between 1820 and 1860 Dutch missionaries converted much of the Minahasa region. The Javanese prince Diponegoro was exiled here in 1830.
An earthquake flattened the town in 1844, it was occupied by Japan from 1942, and it was hit again during the Permesta rebellion of 1957-1958 (German and French Wikipedia). That is why the centre feels modern today.
Food and drink
Cakalang, tinutuan and rica-rica: the cooking of North Sulawesi
Minahasan cuisine is unlike the rest of Indonesia and is among the spiciest in the country. Tinutuan, a porridge of rice, pumpkin and vegetables that is not spicy, is the breakfast dish, also called bubur Manado. Cakalang, grilled or smoked skipjack tuna, goes with yellow rice (nasi kuning), while rica-rica, a fiery chilli paste, flavours chicken or fish. Woku, a blend of red ginger, turmeric, candlenut and chilli, and the dabu-dabu sauce of chilli, onion and tomato complete the picture (Wikipedia, Wikivoyage).
Markets and sweets
The morning market of Pasar Bersehati sums up the local food culture. For dessert, try klappertaart, a coconut cake, and brenebon, a kidney bean soup. Padang restaurants offer halal options.
Drinks
Saguer, a palm wine, and cap tikus, a palm spirit of about 40% alcohol, are the traditional drinks; enjoy them in moderation. Coffee chains are found in the shopping malls.
Climate
A hot, humid equatorial climate all year
May to October
The period guides recommend for calmer seas and more stable diving at Bunaken and Lembeh.
November to April
More showers; January is on average the wettest month, with about 465 mm (Wikipedia).
All year
Tropical rainforest climate: monthly means hover around 25 to 27 degrees C and the hottest days reach about 32 degrees C.
In the highlands
Tomohon and its surroundings are cooler, around 20 degrees C (Wikivoyage).
Sources disagree on rainfall: English Wikipedia gives about 3,300 mm a year (1961-1990), German Wikipedia about 2,100 mm for 2020. Expect rain in any season; September is the driest month in English Wikipedia's averages, while Wikivoyage puts the wet season from September to March or April. Pack a light rain jacket and ask your dive operator about sea conditions.
Budget
A very affordable destination
Manado is among the least expensive destinations in Indonesia. A simple meal costs a few tens of thousands of rupiah, basic lodging a few hundred thousand (Wikivoyage, 2022 to 2024 listings, to be checked), and shared minibus rides are paid in thousands. The main expense is diving: boat packages, equipment rental and park fees vary by operator and season. We do not publish precise prices, as they change and are hard to cross-check.
Getting around
Getting around Manado
The blue minibuses called mikrolets (angkots) follow fixed routes and cost a few thousand rupiah a ride; motorbike taxis (ojek) are negotiated; Grab and Gojek work in town and can go as far as Tomohon. The Bluebird taxi company is named as the most reliable (Wikivoyage). For day trips, a rental car with driver is the simplest option. Long-distance buses leave from the Karombasan and Malalayang terminals.
