Gateway to the dragons
Labuan Bajo, the starting point for Komodo National Park
At the western tip of the island of Flores, in East Nusa Tenggara, Labuan Bajo is a former fishing village that has become the departure port for Komodo National Park. It is the capital of West Manggarai Regency and had an estimated 7,000 residents in 2024 according to Wikipedia (around 31,000 with neighboring communities). Its name means the harbor of the Bajo, a sea-going people.
Tourism has grown very fast since the 2010s: in 2019 the area had 13 five-star hotels and 68 non-star hotels. You do not come for the town itself, which is small and crossed on foot in a quarter of an hour, but for the islands and sea beyond it.
The park
Komodo dragons, Padar and Pink Beach
| Site | Why go |
|---|---|
| Komodo Island | The largest population of Komodo dragons, the biggest living lizard, seen on a trek with rangers. |
| Rinca Island | The second dragon-viewing site, a shorter trip from Labuan Bajo. |
| Padar Island | The famous viewpoint over bays of different colors; dragons have died out here. |
| Pink Beach | A beach whose sand is pink from coral fragments, popular for snorkeling. |
| Kalong Island | At dusk, thousands of flying foxes leave the island in a column toward Flores. |
The park covers roughly 1,700 to 1,800 km2 depending on the source, of which 603 km2 is land: three main islands, Komodo, Rinca and Padar, and many smaller ones.
Around town
Caves, waterfalls and villages
While the park is the reason for the trip, several sights can be visited without a boat, often with a driver for the day.
Batu Cermin Cave
About 4 to 5 km from town, the Mirror Stone Cave takes a few dozen minutes to visit, no boat needed

A bay in the park
Boat trips stop in bays edged by green hills, where the sea turns turquoise over the reefs

Wae Rebo village, known for its traditional Mbaru Niang houses, is half a day by road (roughly five to seven hours depending on the source) and needs a final walk of about 4.5 km, so plan one or two nights there. Labuan Bajo has no real museum; information on the park is available at the national park office in town.
Underwater
Diving and snorkeling in the park
The park's waters hold around 1,000 fish species and 260 reef coral species according to German Wikipedia, plus dolphins and turtles. Manta rays are seen at Manta Point, and some sites, such as Batu Bolong, are known for strong currents and suit experienced divers.
The usual format is a day boat trip, or a multi-day dive cruise (liveaboard). Compare operators and ask what the price includes, especially equipment and the park entry fee.
A century of protection
From the 1938 reserve to World Heritage
According to Wikipedia, Padar and part of Rinca became nature reserves in 1938 and Komodo in 1965; the national park was created in 1980, extended in 1984, and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. Labuan Bajo took off as a tourist hub much later, with the park's growing fame.
Food and drink
Fish market, harbor bars and Flores
The fish market on Jalan Soekarno Hatta has evening stalls where fresh fish is grilled to order, served with rice and sambal. Small local restaurants serve mie goreng and fish dishes at low prices; some add a 10% service charge. The waterfront bars are known for their sunsets.
Beer is sold in supermarkets. Wikivoyage warns against local arak, which can be contaminated with methanol: stick to branded drinks.
