An airport about 1 km from the centre, the port 3 km away

SOQ

Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ)

The airport is about 1 km south of the town centre and about 3 km east of the ferry port, according to Wikivoyage. Direct flights are limited: Wikipedia (DE) lists Jakarta, Makassar and towns in southern Papua, and Wikivoyage notes that most trips need two or three connections. Check current routes before booking.

Distances based on Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (DE); routes and timetables change. We do not quote fares.

From the airport to the port

The ride to the centre or the port takes only a few minutes by taxi (minivan) or ojek (motorbike taxi), the two local means of transport according to Wikivoyage. Agree the price before setting off.

Combining flight and ferry

Most visitors to Raja Ampat take an early-morning flight to catch the ferry to Waisai (Wikivoyage). Allow at least two hours between landing and boarding, since timetables and delays vary, or plan a night in Sorong.

An oil port and the gateway to the archipelago

Sorong has about 285,000 inhabitants (Wikipedia DE) and is the capital of the province of South West Papua. It is a centre of the country's oil and gas industry and a logistics port for eastern Indonesia; the town is a stopover more than a destination. Wikipedia describes it as the gateway to Raja Ampat, at the heart of the world's coral biodiversity.

An archipelago of karst pinnacles

Offshore, the Raja Ampat archipelago has forested karst islets rising from a turquoise lagoon: the viewpoint panorama is the region's signature image. You reach them by boat from the homestays, with a local guide.

Lagoons and reefs from above

Seen from the air, lagoons, sandbanks and reefs form a mosaic of blues and greens. To make the most of them, choose outings organised by your host, who knows the tides and access.

In and around town

Sorong has a seafront promenade (Wikipedia DE). Wikivoyage lists the beaches of Tanjung Batu, Tanjung Kasuari and Tembok Berlin, Doom Island, Matan Island (white sand beach), the Aimas bird park and the Klawalu mangrove park for walks. Nightlife is limited, which suits a stopover before a nature trip.

Waisai, Dampier, Misool and Wayag

The ferry to Waisai

The crossing to Waisai, the capital of Raja Ampat on Waigeo island, takes about two hours according to Wikivoyage, with daily departures around 2 p.m. and several sailings a week. Timetables change: check them, and do not book a return flight too tightly.

Diving in Raja Ampat

Manta rays, reef sharks, turtles and exceptional coral biodiversity: the Dampier Strait in the north and Misool in the south are classic dive areas. Snorkelling is often possible straight from the stilted homestays.

Wayag and the islands

Wayag and other distant sites are visited mostly on dive cruises or by chartered boat. Travel between islands is by boat, usually arranged by your accommodation. We give no precise durations because we could not cross-check them.

No major documented museum: culture is lived on the spot

No major museum

We found no important documented museum in Sorong in the open sources consulted (Wikivoyage, Wikipedia). Do not make it a reason to travel.

Crafts and Papuan batik

Wikivoyage lists Papuan batik among possible purchases in town. The villages and homestays of Raja Ampat are the real chance to meet local communities, with respect for their customs.

Protected nature

The nature conservation agency is based in Sorong (Wikipedia DE). A conservation pass is required to visit the archipelago: according to the travel press it is valid for a year and sold only at official offices; check the amount and rules on official sites.

Seafood, taro chips and homestay meals

In town

Sorong is known for keripik keladi, taro chips, also available in a sweet-and-spicy version, to take home (Wikivoyage). In the evening, seafood sellers set up on Tembok Berlin beach.

In the archipelago

Meals are mostly eaten at homestays and resorts, around fresh fish and seafood, often on half board. Tell your host about dietary needs in advance.

Drinks

Tap water is not drinkable: use bottled or purified water. Alcohol is rare at homestays and easier to find at resorts.

Taxis, ojek, ferry and chartered boats

In town

People get around by taxi (minivan) or ojek; prices for foreigners should be negotiated in advance (Wikivoyage, Wikipedia DE). The centre is small.

To the archipelago

The public ferry goes to Waisai; after that you must charter a boat, usually through your accommodation. Sea links to Sorong, for example with Pelni from Makassar, also exist (Wikivoyage).

Cash

ATMs are rare or absent on the islands: withdraw money in Sorong before you leave.

A very variable budget, from homestay to liveaboard

Price level

Raja Ampat is more expensive than the Indonesian average: remoteness, boats and the pass all weigh. Homestays, for example on Kri island, remain much cheaper than a resort, and liveaboards of seven to eight nights are at the top end. We do not quote prices because we could not cross-check them.

Flights

The flight is the most variable cost. SniperAir tracks fares to SOQ and compares them with the route's history, but does not sell or book tickets. Think about connections via Jakarta (CGK) or Makassar (UPG) and their total cost.

Security and health

Several governments publish advisories for certain areas of the Papua region: read your foreign ministry's before booking and stay on tourist routes. Plan for sun and mosquito protection, insurance covering diving and evacuation, and check Indonesian entry requirements.

Equator and seasons

Sorong lies about 1 degree south of the equator: there are no true reversed seasons, rather rainfall patterns.
