Miyakojima, a flat coral island with brilliantly clear water

Miyako Island is the fourth-largest island in Okinawa Prefecture and is known for some of the best beaches in Japan and an exceptionally intense blue sea. Its secret is geology: the island, like the whole Miyako archipelago, is built of limestone and uplifted coral reef (Wikipedia EN, DE).

The result is a landscape of its own: a flat island whose highest point reaches only 114.8 m (Wikipedia EN), with no mountains and no notable rivers, largely covered in sugar cane fields under a mild subtropical climate all year. Hirara is the main town. The island has about 45,600 residents (2015 census) and received more than a million visitors in both 2018 and 2019 (Wikipedia EN).

Irabu, Ikema and Kurima: three bridges, three islands

The Irabu Bridge

Opened on 31 January 2015, the Irabu Bridge (Irabu Ohashi) is 3,540 m long and is Japan's longest toll-free bridge (Japanese Wikipedia). It links Miyako to Irabu Island over open sea. The signature experience of the island is to rent a car and chain the bridges, from one satellite island to the next. Make use of the viewpoints at either end of the bridge.

Ikema Ohashi1,425 m, opened 1992Ikema, to the north
Kurima Ohashi1,690 m, opened 1995Kurima, to the south-west

Shimoji completes the archipelago and is linked to Irabu by the bridge. Tarama can be reached by plane (20 minutes) or ferry (2 hours) from Miyako (Wikivoyage EN). Boat trips and snorkelling excursions are offered towards Irabu and Kurima.

An airport about ten minutes from Hirara

MMY

Miyako

Miyako Airport is in Hirara, about 10 minutes by car from the centre according to Japanese Wikipedia. It has scheduled services from Tokyo Haneda, Naha, Osaka (Kansai, and Itami seasonally), Nagoya, Ishigaki and Tarama (as of April 2025). Shimojishima Airport, open to scheduled flights since 2019, is the main low-cost carrier airport and has a service from Seoul (Wikivoyage EN).

No scheduled ferry has linked the island with the rest of Okinawa since 2008 (Wikivoyage EN), so you arrive by air. Okinawa's main island is about 300 km to the north-east, and the Yaeyama Islands about 250 km to the south-west (German Wikipedia). Flight times and schedules depend on the airline, so check before you book.

Yonaha Maehama, Sunayama and the snorkelling spots

Yonaha Maehama

The island's most famous beach runs for 7 km in the south-west, facing Kurima Island. It is a supervised swimming beach: jellyfish nets and lifeguards in season, free parking, showers and changing rooms (Japanese Wikipedia). Tripadvisor ranked it Japan's number one beach in 2019. After the typhoons of 2018, erosion narrowed the sand in places.

Sunayama

You reach it on foot over a sand dune. On the other side wait white sand, turquoise water and rock formations.

Aragusuku and Yoshino

The two beaches favoured by snorkellers: well-preserved reefs and colourful fish a few metres from shore (German Wikipedia).

Higashi-hennazaki

At the south-east of the island, the Eastern Cape, a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, is a classic sunrise spot (Wikipedia EN).

Tropical garden, German village and sacred sites

Miyakojima is not a destination of big museums: you come mainly for the sea. A few places nevertheless deserve a detour. Opening hours and prices change, so check before you go.

Tropical Plant Garden

The Miyakojima City Tropical Plant Garden is among the island's listed points of interest (Wikipedia EN).

Ueno German Culture Village

Open since 1995, this theme park shows original pieces of the Berlin Wall and a replica of Marksburg Castle (German Wikipedia). Wikipedia describes it as a theme park, not a museum.

City museum and sacred sites

A general museum of the island, mentioned in Japanese sources, displays among other things a Paantu figure (Japanese Wikipedia). The city lists 122 heritage items, including sacred sites (utaki), springs and scenic places such as the Tori-ike pools on Shimoji (French Wikipedia).

Crafts

Miyako-jofu, a hand-woven ramie textile, dates back to the Tenshō era (1573-1592); sugar cane and brown sugar are other emblematic products (Wikipedia EN).

Paantu, Miyako soba, awamori and seafood

In the ninth month of the lunar calendar, the Paantu festival sends men covered in grass, leaves and mud through the villages to smear houses, cars and people; those who are muddied are said to be protected for a year (Wikipedia EN, DE).

Specialities

Miyako has its own version of Okinawa soba (Wikipedia EN, FR). Among the seafood to try are sea grapes (umi-budo) and coconut crab. Mango season falls in summer.

Awamori

Awamori is Okinawa's distilled spirit; the custom of otōri has people share it around a table in a set sequence (Wikipedia EN). A distillery, Kikunotsuyu, is based in Hirara (Wikivoyage EN).

Where to eat

Restaurants are concentrated in Hirara, with more isolated places near the beaches; book sought-after tables in high season.

Rental car, buses and taxis

On the island, a rental car is the simplest way to cross the three big bridges and reach the satellite islands. Wikivoyage EN also mentions scooter and bicycle rental, plentiful taxis and an infrequent bus. Traffic drives on the left; check the licence conditions that apply to your nationality before you book.

Buses

Several Miyako Kyoei routes serve the airport (Airport Terminal Mae stop): routes 2 and 4 run about 11 round trips a day, and route 9 and the Shimojishima airport liner run 3 to 4 times a day depending on flights (Japanese Wikipedia, as of April 2025). Departures are therefore spaced out, so plan your journeys.

Driving with care

Wikivoyage EN names driving as the main risk for visitors, with vehicles pulling into traffic without warning. Occasional theft is also reported: do not leave valuables visible in the car.

Bridges and islands

The Irabu Bridge is toll-free (Japanese Wikipedia).

Subtropical: warm sea, typhoons possible

Spring

March to May: 23 to 27 °C by day according to the data (Japanese Wikipedia). The swimming season officially opens in April, with the sea-opening ceremony at Yonaha Maehama.

Autumn

September to November: still warm, 25 to 30 °C by day, but typhoons remain possible into autumn; the sea stays pleasant.

Winter

December to February: about 20 to 22 °C by day and 16 to 18 °C at night; February is the driest month (about 120 mm). Cooler, fine for quiet beaches but less for long swims.

Miyakojima has a humid subtropical climate on the border with equatorial (Spanish and English Wikipedia): an annual mean temperature of about 23.8 °C, about 2,076 mm of rain a year, average humidity of 77% and about 1,744 hours of sunshine. The record high is 35.3 °C and the record low 6.9 °C. The island is frequently hit by typhoons: check forecasts before you leave and allow flexibility on dates and insurance.
