An Osaka travel guide starts at the table

Any Osaka travel guide has to begin with the local motto, "kuidaore": eat yourself into ruin. Japan's third most populous city, on Osaka Bay in the Kansai region of Honshu, is the core of the country's second-largest metropolitan area, about 19.3 million people. It has its own dialect, Osaka-ben, a strong comedy culture and a down-to-earth spirit that makes it the perfect counterpoint to Tokyo.

A merchant city

Osaka has always lived from trade: the Dojima Rice Exchange was established here in 1697, during the Edo period. Despite a rougher reputation, the city is remarkably safe compared with Western cities of similar size.

DishWhat it is
TakoyakiPieces of octopus in balls of fried batter, the emblem of Osaka street food
OkonomiyakiA savoury cabbage pancake cooked on a griddle
KushikatsuDeep-fried battered skewers dipped in a thin black sauce

The Dotonbori canal district in Minami is the main eating and nightlife hub, and Kuromon Market is another stop for food lovers.

Hideyoshi's castle, rebuilt by its citizens

The castle begun in 1583

Toyotomi Hideyoshi began Osaka Castle in 1583, on the site of the Ishiyama Hongan-ji temple, and it played a major role in the unification of Japan in the 16th century. The main tower you see today was rebuilt in concrete in 1931 with funds raised by the citizens, then refurbished in 1997; it houses a museum on the castle and on Hideyoshi. The surrounding park, with moats and cherry trees, also holds the Hokoku shrine, dedicated to Hideyoshi, so the whole site makes a coherent half-day visit.

Shitennoji, Sumiyoshi Taisha and the oldest Osaka

Shitenno-ji, in the south of the city, was founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku and is described as the oldest officially administered Buddhist temple in Japan. It has been destroyed and rebuilt several times; its last reconstruction dates from 1963, and the visit combines easily with a stroll through the traditional Tennoji district.

Sumiyoshi Taisha and Tenmangu

Sumiyoshi Taisha, traditionally founded in the year 211, is one of the country's oldest Shinto shrines, with stone torii, lanterns and an arched bridge. Osaka Tenmangu, founded in 949, is where the Tenjin Matsuri, a great river festival held on 24 and 25 July, begins.

An old capital

Under the name Naniwa, Osaka was an imperial capital several times in the 7th and 8th centuries, long before the castle.

Dotonbori, Shinsekai and the nightlife districts

A district born in 1612

Dotonbori was created in 1612 by the merchant Yasui Doton. From the Edo period it became Osaka's cultural and commercial heart, with its theatres and teahouses. Today it is an emblematic neon street, to be walked by day and by night: in the evening izakayas, bars and karaoke venues follow one another under lanterns and illuminated signs, and the Glico running man sign is reflected in the canal.

Shinsekai, a retro district inspired by Paris and New York in the early 20th century, is dominated by the Tsutenkaku tower and known for kushikatsu. Amerika-mura draws a young crowd, and Kita-Shinchi is the more upscale address.

Osaka's observation decks

The Umeda Sky Building, 173 m, links two 40-storey towers and has an open-air observatory reached by a suspended escalator, with a 360-degree view. Abeno Harukas rises to 300 m, with its Harukas 300 observatory on floors 58 to 60; it also holds an art museum, a hotel and a department store.

Osaka also hosted two world's fairs: Expo '70, the first in Asia, commemorated by a memorial park, and Expo 2025 on the artificial island of Yumeshima.

Umeda, Shinsaibashi and Den Den Town

Kita, around JR Osaka Station in Umeda, is the department-store district. Shinsaibashi-suji and Dotonbori line up boutiques and covered arcades, Amerika-mura has vintage fashion, and Den Den Town near Namba is the electronics, manga and video-game quarter.

The Osaka subway has nine lines and about 130 stations; the central ride between Namba and Umeda (Midosuji line) takes about 7 minutes. The ICOCA IC card works on the subway, trains and buses of the region, and one-day tourist passes exist (Osaka Amazing Pass, Osaka Rakuyu Pass).
