Fukuoka, Japan's gateway to Asia

Fukuoka is the most populous city on Kyushu and sits on Hakata Bay, the point of the main Japanese islands closest to the Asian mainland. It has been a trading port since ancient times, and that contact with Korea and China gave it a distinct local culture and dialect. It is also one of Japan's fastest-growing cities and regularly appears in rankings of the most liveable ones.

Until 1889 it was two towns, the merchant port of Hakata and the samurai castle town of Fukuoka. Legend says the samurai crashed the naming vote, which is why the city is called Fukuoka while the main station and port are still called Hakata. When searching timetables, type Hakata.

Hakata ramen, yatai and what to eat in Fukuoka

Hakata ramen

Fukuoka is known for tonkotsu ramen, a creamy pork-bone broth simmered for hours and served with thin noodles. When the bowl runs low you can order a refill of noodles, called kaedama. It counts among Japan's top three ramen styles.

Yatai, the open-air stalls

Every evening yatai stalls open on the streets of Tenjin, Nakasu and Nagahama, serving ramen, yakitori, gyoza and more. Etiquette is simple: respect your neighbours' space, avoid big groups and do not linger. Cash is the norm and menus are mostly in Japanese.

More local flavours

Try motsunabe, an offal hotpot best in winter, mentaiko, the spicy pollock roe, and mizutaki, a chicken broth with ponzu. At lunchtime, set menus often cost a half to a third of the dinner price.

A port that looked to Korea and China

The first contact with China is recorded as early as 57 AD, and the Mongol fleets of 1274 and 1281 were stopped on this coast, the second by the typhoon that gave the world the word kamikaze. Today Kushida Shrine in Hakata is the heart of the city's festivals, and the port still runs ferries to Busan in South Korea.

Fukuoka Tower and Momochi beach

Japan's tallest seaside tower

Near the urban beach of Momochi, Fukuoka Tower is 234 metres high, the tallest seaside tower in Japan. Its highest observation deck, at 123 metres, gives a 360-degree view of the city, the bay and the mountains, and the tower is lit up at night. The Seaside Momochi district was built for the 1989 Asia-Pacific Exhibition.

Hakata Gion Yamakasa and Hakata Dontaku

The Hakata Gion Yamakasa runs in the first half of July and is more than 700 years old. Teams of men carry floats weighing about a tonne through the streets in a race that ends before dawn on 15 July.

In early May, on the 3rd and 4th, Hakata Dontaku fills downtown with stages and parades and draws more than two million people, the biggest crowd of Golden Week.
