Kalibo, then about 70 km by road and a short boat ride

KLO

Kalibo (KLO)

Kalibo International Airport (KLO) is about 2 km from Kalibo town and roughly 68 to 70 km from Caticlan port, according to Wikipedia (EN, FR) and Wikivoyage (EN). This is the airport SniperAir tracks. It handles bigger aircraft than Caticlan, with flights from Manila of about 45 minutes per Wikipedia (EN) and several international links from Asia per Wikivoyage (EN). From there, vans or buses reach Caticlan port in 1.5 to 2 hours according to Wikivoyage (EN), then a small boat crosses the strait, a few minutes, to the Cagban jetty on Boracay.

MPH

Caticlan (MPH)

Godofredo P. Ramos Airport, known as Caticlan, is much closer to the island: the port is about 500 m away per Wikipedia (DE), and the runway was extended in 2016 to take Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 jets per Wikipedia (FR). It is not covered by this page: compare both options depending on your departure city.

Distances and times are approximate (Wikipedia, Wikivoyage) and depend on traffic and sea conditions. We do not quote fares.

Boracay is a small island of about 10.3 km2, less than a kilometre off the north-western tip of Panay, per Wikipedia (FR, EN). It had about 37,800 inhabitants in 2020 according to Wikipedia (EN). Sources disagree on the distance to Manila, about 300 km per Wikipedia (FR) and 315 km per Wikipedia (ES), so we quote no precise figure.

The full journey from Kalibo therefore has three stages: the airport, the road north from Kalibo to Caticlan, then the boat to the island. Allow time to spare, especially at the end of your stay if you have an international flight.

White Beach, paraw sailboats and sunsets

Boracay is about sea and sand first. The following places are illustrated.

White Beach and the paraw sailboats

White Beach, on the west coast, is the island's best-known beach: about 4 km according to Wikipedia (EN, ES) and 3.5 km according to Wikipedia (DE). It is divided into three zones, Stations 1, 2 and 3, from north to south, per Wikivoyage (EN). Paraw, traditional outrigger sailboats, can be hired to visit the island's beaches, per Wikivoyage (EN).

A viewpoint over the bay

Mount Luho, the island's highest point at 113 m according to Wikipedia (DE), looks over the island, its turquoise bays and the land of Panay. The photo shows one of the coastal bays seen from the heights.

Sunset over the sea

The west coast faces the setting sun; Wikivoyage (EN) suggests returning from a boat trip at this hour to enjoy the light. In the photo, boats and parasails stand out against the orange sky.

A sailboat at dusk

Paraw sailboats are the island's emblem: they glide off White Beach at the end of the day. The photo shows the silhouette of a sailboat in front of the sun.

Beach and coconut palms

Outside the high season or at dusk, the beaches are quieter. The photo shows a pale sand beach lined with tall coconut palms.

Puka, Diniwid and Bulabog

Puka Beach, in the north, is quieter with coarser sand according to Wikivoyage (EN); Diniwid is on the west coast north of White Beach per Wikipedia (DE, ES). Bulabog, on the east coast, is the main kitesurfing and windsurfing spot per Wikipedia (EN, DE, ES).

A regulated island

Boracay was closed to tourists from 26 April to late October 2018 to rehabilitate its wastewater, per Wikipedia (EN, DE). Stricter rules have applied since, including a 30 m buffer from the waterline per Wikipedia (EN), and access via Caticlan port follows the island's rules. Sources disagree on the reopening date, between 15 and 26 October 2018.

Other places

The bat cave, Ariel's Point 30 minutes by boat from Station 1 and Crocodile Island are mentioned by Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (DE). We quote no fares.

Few museums, but the heritage of Panay

Heritage in Kalibo

The Museo it Akean in Kalibo traces the history of Aklan province per Wikipedia (EN). It is in Kalibo town, about 2 km from the airport per Wikipedia (EN): an easy visit if you spend a night there.

The Ati-Atihan festival

Kalibo's Ati-Atihan festival, held every second week of January and ending on the third Sunday, is said to be the oldest in the country per Wikipedia (EN). A smaller version takes place on Boracay in the second or third week of January per Wikipedia (EN, ES). The Ati were the island's first inhabitants.

Weaving and mangroves

Piña weaving, using pineapple fibre, has been on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2023, per Wikipedia (EN), in Kalibo; the Bakhawan Eco-Park, a mangrove reserve, is also mentioned. We quote no fees or opening hours.

Seafood, mangoes and bakeries

An international table

Boracay has many restaurants, mostly on White Beach and the pedestrian D'Mall street, and plenty of bakeries, per Wikivoyage (EN). Eating out costs more than elsewhere according to that source, but no reliable figure emerges.

Mangoes and market

Wikivoyage (EN) advises trying the mangoes, ripe and sweet all year. Cheaper options are near D'Talipapa market and along the main road.

Precautions

Choose bottled water and eat carefully if you are not used to the local cuisine.

Electric tricycles, walking and boats

On the island

Most visitors use electric tricycles, which act as taxis, or walk, per Wikipedia (EN) and Wikivoyage (EN). White Beach is off limits to motor vehicles per Wikivoyage (EN). Fares vary with who you ask: negotiate or ask the price before getting in.

To the island

From Caticlan, outrigger boats leave every few minutes per Wikivoyage (EN). Depending on the wind, especially in September, the landing can change from Cagban to Tambisaan.

From Manila

Wikivoyage (EN) also describes the overland and sea route: about 12 hours in all by combining road and ferry, far longer than the flight to Kalibo or Caticlan.

High prices in season, and rules to respect

Price level

Wikivoyage (EN) describes a destination where meals cost more than elsewhere in the country. We quote no figures because rates change.

Currency

The currency is the Philippine peso. ATMs exist on the island, but carry cash.

Environment and safety

Algae appeared from 2015 because of sewage, before the 2018 closure, per Wikipedia (EN). In the rainy season White Beach can be rough and unsuitable for swimming per Wikivoyage (EN): check the day's conditions. Check your government's official travel advice before booking.

Flights and insurance

SniperAir monitors prices to KLO and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. To compare, you can also follow Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB). Typhoons are possible between August and October per Wikipedia (DE): travel insurance is useful.

Dry season November to April, rain June to October

Amihan, the dry season (November to April)

According to Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (DE), the north-east wind brings little rain: White Beach is calm and good for swimming, while Bulabog on the east coast draws wind sports. Wikipedia (EN) puts the tourism peak from the end-of-year holidays to February.

March and April

Wikipedia (DE) names March and April as the best months for fine weather.

Habagat, the rainy season (June to October)

The south-west monsoon brings rain and waves to White Beach per Wikivoyage (EN); typhoons often pass between August and October per Wikipedia (DE).

All year

Temperatures vary little, between 25 and 30 °C per Wikipedia (EN).

If you want to swim at White Beach, November to April is the safest period; for kitesurfing, it is also the wind season at Bulabog. We give no precise monthly averages because sources differ.
