An airport on neighbouring Mactan island, about 45 minutes from the city

CEB

Mactan-Cebu (CEB)

Mactan-Cebu International Airport is on Mactan island, in Lapu-Lapu City, not in Cebu City itself, according to Wikipedia (EN, ES, DE). It is the country's second-busiest airport, handling around 11 million passengers in 2019 per Wikipedia (FR). Wikipedia (FR) puts it about 20 km from the centre, and Wikivoyage (EN) says a bus or taxi ride takes roughly 45 minutes depending on traffic. Wikivoyage (EN, DE) lists airport buses to the city, and a short ferry crosses the Mactan channel to Pier 3. The Cebu-Cordova bridge opened in 2022 and links Cebu island to Mactan.

Distances and times are approximate and depend on traffic. We do not quote fares.

Cebu City is the capital of Cebu Province and the largest city of Central Visayas. Wikipedia (EN) counted about 965,000 residents in 2024, and the metro area is the second largest in the country after Manila. The same source nicknames it the oldest city in the Philippines. Treat it first as a gateway: people come for the heritage and the port, then head on to islands and beaches.

Where Christianity reached the Philippines: basilica, cross and temple

Magellan landed on Cebu in April 1521 and was welcomed by Rajah Humabon before being killed on Mactan by Lapu-Lapu, according to Wikipedia (EN, FR). Spanish colonisation began in 1565 (Wikipedia EN, FR, ES), and Wikipedia (FR) calls Cebu the cradle of Christianity in the Far East. The places below are illustrated.

A city of towers on the strait

Cebu is also a business metropolis: Wikipedia (EN) calls it a major hub for outsourcing, and Wikipedia (FR) names business zones such as Cebu IT Park. The wide view shows modern towers, low-rise districts and the sea beyond.

The Basilica del Santo Nino

The Basilica Minore del Santo Nino was founded in 1565 on the spot where the image of the Christ Child was found, according to Wikipedia (EN, FR); Wikipedia (DE) calls it the oldest Christian church in the Philippines. Pale stone, a pink bell tower: it is one of the most visited places in the centre.

Magellan's Cross

The octagonal tile-roofed pavilion shelters the cross linked to the 1521 landing (Wikipedia EN, ES); Wikipedia (ES) notes it is protected by a structure. A visit takes a few minutes and sits right beside the basilica.

The Taoist temple

Cebu Taoist Temple, in the Beverly Hills area, is listed by Wikipedia (EN, DE): green- and red-roofed pavilions set among gardens. Its contrast with the colonial churches is the reason to go.

The island's beaches

Cebu City is not a beach city: the white sand is on Mactan and on the island's coast, with Moalboal and Oslob as the usual excursions, according to Wikivoyage (EN). This aerial view of a beach with outrigger boats gives an idea of what you travel an hour or two to find.

Outrigger boats at sunset

Traditional outrigger boats ply the waters around the island. On the west coast, Moalboal is known for sardines gathering near the reef, says Wikivoyage (EN).

Colon Street and the centre

Colon Street, the oldest national road in the Philippines according to Wikipedia (EN), is the commercial heart of the old centre. Wikivoyage (EN, DE) also lists Fort San Pedro, built in 1565 per Wikipedia (ES), the cathedral, Casa Gorordo and Carbon Market, the city's biggest farmers' market.

Sinulog

The Sinulog, a major dance festival honouring the Santo Nino, takes place on the third Sunday of January according to Wikipedia (FR) and Wikivoyage (EN); the city is then very busy, hotels fill up and traffic thickens.

House museums, the fort and provincial history

Heritage on foot

Casa Gorordo, an old house turned museum, the Museo Sugbo provincial museum, the basilica museum, the Yap-Sandiego House and the Jesuit House are named by Wikivoyage (EN). Fort San Pedro, from 1565, houses a museum according to Wikipedia (ES).

Faith and festivals

About 87 per cent of the population is Catholic according to Wikipedia (FR), which shows in city life: Masses, processions and the Sinulog.

Before you go

We quote no fees or hours: they change and sources disagree. Check opening days before setting out.

Lechon, mangoes, fruit juices and Carbon Market

Cebu lechon

German Wikivoyage names Cebu lechon, whole roast pig, among the city's specialities. It is the only source to do so, so take it as a lead rather than a certainty.

Fruit and markets

Green mangoes with salt and fresh fruit juices are mentioned by Wikivoyage (DE). Carbon Market, the largest farmers' market in the city according to Wikivoyage (EN), is the best place to see local produce.

Meals

Street food stalls and local chains in shopping malls are common; we name no brands. Carry bottled water and be careful with unfamiliar dishes.

Jeepneys, taxis and ferries to the islands

In the city

Jeepneys run around the clock on main roads according to Wikivoyage (EN); taxis have meters, and Grab is widely used per Wikivoyage (DE, EN). Pickpocketing is very common on jeepneys and around Colon Street, Wikivoyage (EN) warns.

Ferries

Cebu's port is the second largest in the country, with more than 20 shipping lines and about 40 ports served, according to Wikipedia (FR). To Bohol, a fast ferry takes about 1.5 hours to Tagbilaran per Wikivoyage (EN); schedules change, so check before you go.

Day trips south

Moalboal is about 80 km away, 2.5 hours by van and about 4 hours by local bus according to Wikivoyage (EN); Oslob is about 3 hours by bus. Whale-shark watching at Oslob is controversial because the animals are lured with food, Wikivoyage (EN) notes: it is up to you to decide.
