Bangkok became the capital of Siam in 1782, when General Chao Phraya Chakkri — crowned as Rama I, founder of the Chakri dynasty still on the throne today — moved the royal court from Thonburi on the river's west bank to the east bank, launching the Rattanakosin era. The choice was strategic: a wide bend in the Chao Phraya already formed a natural moat, and Rama I had extra canals dug to turn the new capital into a defensible artificial island. The Grand Palace and the Emerald Buddha

Consecrated in 1782, the Grand Palace spreads across 94.5 hectares and more than 100 buildings accumulated over two centuries of royal architectural experimentation — Thai and Western motifs mixed so freely that one wing, originally planned with a European dome, was topped instead by King Rama V with a layered Thai-style spire once described as looking like "a Westerner wearing a Thai classical dancer's headdress." At its heart sits Wat Phra Kaew, founded the same year the palace was consecrated: Thailand's most sacred temple, home to the Emerald Buddha, venerated as the kingdom's protective national symbol.

Wat Pho and Wat Arun, two temples either side of the river

A short walk from the Grand Palace, Wat Pho houses a 46-metre gold-plated reclining Buddha commissioned by Rama III in 1832. Rama III also turned the temple into Thailand's first public university, dedicating it to traditional medicine and massage — a school still runs on-site today, open to visitors who want to learn the technique rather than just receive it. Across the water, Wat Arun's central prang was raised in the early 19th century under Rama II and finished under Rama III; its spires are covered in floral mosaics made from broken, multicoloured Chinese porcelain, repurposed from ballast once dumped by Chinese trading ships arriving at Bangkok's port. Steep steps climb partway up for river views, best timed for sunset when the tower catches the light.

Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa, both day trips outside the city center, preserve a slice of Bangkok's original canal-based layout: boats piled with produce and cooked food still navigate the waterways, a legacy of a time when canals — not roads — moved the city's goods. They're a different experience entirely from Yaowarat's street stalls, closer to a working market than a night-market spectacle, best visited early in the morning before the tour groups arrive.

Yaowarat transforms every evening into one of the densest street-food destinations in the world: smoky woks, seafood carts and Michelin-recognized stalls line the road as neon signs flicker on. Pad thai, guay jub (a peppery rolled rice-noodle soup that's a genuine Chinatown specialty), boat noodles with their intensely flavored broth once sold from canal boats, and grilled seafood or oyster omelets fill the carts until midnight — most authentic dishes still cost locals only ฿40-80 a plate.

Skytrain, river boats and a new entry fee

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) sits about 21 km from the center; the Airport Rail Link from Makkasan reaches downtown in roughly 22 minutes for about 35 baht. In the city, the elevated BTS Skytrain and underground MRT bypass Bangkok's notorious traffic, while Chao Phraya river express boats offer a cheap, scenic way to reach the Grand Palace, Wat Arun and Wat Pho without touching a road at all. Daily costs run from around $59 for a budget traveler mixing street food and public transit up to $135 mid-range — genuinely affordable by global standards, though as of 2026 a mandatory 300-baht (~$9) tourist entry fee is now collected on arrival, worth factoring into any trip budget.
