Until the mid-20th century, Abu Dhabi was little more than a small settlement of the Bani Yas tribe, living off fishing and pearl diving on an island fringed with mangroves and reachable only by boat. For generations, divers worked the pearl beds of the Arabian Gulf by hand, without tanks or masks, before the global pearl trade collapsed in the 1930s. Everything changed after oil was struck offshore in the late 1950s: under Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who became ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966 and the founding president of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, the emirate reinvested its new wealth into roads, schools, hospitals and the museums and cultural institutions that define the capital today.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi in white marble

The largest mosque in the UAE and one of the biggest in the world, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was built between 1996 and 2007 across roughly 290 by 420 metres, with 82 white domes and four minarets rising to about 107 metres. It can hold more than 40,000 worshippers and houses one of the world's largest hand-knotted carpets alongside chandeliers set with Swarovski crystals. Entry is free and open to non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times, with abayas provided at the door for anyone who needs one; sunset, when the lighting shifts through the phases of the moon, is generally regarded as the best time to see it.

Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Saadiyat cultural district

Set on Saadiyat Island, Louvre Abu Dhabi opened in 2017 under a vast perforated dome that scatters daylight across the galleries like sunlight through palm fronds, a signature effect nicknamed the "rain of light." It anchors a wider cultural district that is also building the Zayed National Museum and, eventually, a branch of the Guggenheim, alongside newer additions such as teamLab Phenomena — a growing rival to Dubai's malls and towers as the emirates' cultural centre of gravity.

Qasr Al Hosn and the Corniche

The oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Hosn began as a coastal watchtower before growing into the residence of the ruling Al Nahyan family and, later, the seat of government; it is now a museum tracing the city's path from pearling settlement to capital. A short walk or bike ride away, the Corniche stretches for roughly eight kilometres along the Gulf, lining a Blue Flag beach with promenades, cycle paths and gardens that stay busy with residents year-round — as much a piece of daily life as a sight for visitors, with views back toward the downtown skyline and, further off, the Grand Mosque.

Beyond the city

Yas Island, the desert and Al Ain

Yas Island

Yas Island concentrates most of Abu Dhabi's big-ticket entertainment: Ferrari World and some of the world's fastest roller coasters, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World, Yas Mall and the Yas Marina F1 circuit, which hosts the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix every year.

The desert

For a complete change of scenery from the waterfront, desert excursions just outside the city offer dune bashing in 4x4s, camel rides and traditional evening camps with dinner and music under the stars — usually run as a half-day or evening trip from downtown.

Al Ain, the "Garden City"

About 1.5 hours by road from the capital, Al Ain is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed oasis city known for its ancient falaj irrigation channels, historic forts including Al Jahili and the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum, and the archaeological site of Hili. It's also home to Jebel Hafeet, the UAE's second-highest peak, reached by a winding road with sweeping views over the region.
