Distances and times are approximate, based on Wikivoyage (EN, DE); timetables and routes change, so check them before you travel. We do not quote fares.
Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam, in the Gulf of Thailand, according to Wikipedia (FR). It is close to 50 km from north to south and its wooded hills peak at 603 m. It lies closer to Cambodia than to the Vietnamese mainland: about 12 to 15 km from the Cambodian coast depending on the source (Wikipedia DE, Wikivoyage EN). It is nicknamed the "emerald island" and became a special administrative zone of An Giang province in 2025 according to Wikipedia (EN). Area figures range from 568 to 585 km² depending on the page consulted.
Landmarks
Beaches, cable car, fishing villages and temples of the island
Phu Quoc is best discovered along its coast: beaches in the south-east, sunsets in the west, fishing ports and forested hills. Wikivoyage (DE) describes an island in transition, moving from a tropical retreat to a mass-tourism destination. The places below are illustrated; beaches and excursions are described at the end of the section.
The Hon Thom cable car
The cable car links the south of the island to Hon Thom over a route of nearly 8 km (7.9 km according to Wikivoyage EN), in about thirty minutes, above the sea, pearl farms and fishing boats. Sunset is a much sought-after moment. Views over the coast and the An Thoi islets are one of the main draws of the trip.

Villages and beaches of the south
Around An Thoi, a fishing and naval port, small villages line sandy beaches where waves can be strong depending on the season. According to Wikivoyage (DE), An Thoi is also the departure point for diving and snorkelling trips to the islands in the south. Sao Beach, often cited as one of the island's prettiest, is very busy.

The coves of the north-west coast
In the north-west, quiet roads run along peaceful beaches, dense forest and clear-water coves. Wikivoyage (EN) recommends a motorbike ride around the north-west of the island but warns about loose sand on unpaved roads. The fishermen of Ganh Dau come back in the late afternoon.

Fishing ports and floating farms
The coast's ports and villages count dozens of colourful fishing boats and floating farms; Ham Ninh is cited as a fishing village by Wikipedia (ES, DE). Boat trips let you see these installations up close. We do not quote prices, since they change.

Pagodas, Dinh Cau temple and sunset
In Duong Dong, the lighthouse and rock temple of Dinh Cau, by the harbour pier, is a popular meeting place at sunset according to Wikivoyage (DE); the neighbouring night market is lively. The island also has several pagodas open to visitors, to be visited in clothing that covers shoulders and knees.

Beaches, waterfall and nature
Ong Lang Beach, about 5 km north of Duong Dong, is appreciated for sunsets according to Wikivoyage (EN). Bai Truong, known as Long Beach, lines up resorts over about ten kilometres. Suoi Tranh waterfall is a major site in the rainy season but almost dry from November to April. Phu Quoc National Park, created in 2001, protects 70% of the territory according to Wikipedia (FR).
Museums and culture
Phu Quoc prison, fish sauce, pepper and pearls
Phu Quoc Prison
Built by the French to hold captured Viet Minh fighters and later used during the Vietnam War for prisoners, Phu Quoc Prison, also called Coconut Tree Prison, is now a history museum according to Wikipedia (DE) and Wikivoyage (EN). The site recalls a painful chapter of the island's past.
Fish sauce factories
Phu Quoc fish sauce is the first Vietnamese product to receive a protected designation of origin from the European Union, according to Wikipedia (FR). Some factories can be visited, as Wikivoyage (EN) notes. You learn about production from small fish close to anchovies.
Pepper, pearls and local culture
Pepper and pearl farms can be visited, with shops selling products to take home according to Wikivoyage (EN). The island also has a Khmer history: residents of Khmer origin live mainly in the north according to Wikipedia (FR). We do not quote prices: they change and opening hours vary.
Food and drink
Seafood, the night market and fish sauce
Seafood at the night market
Duong Dong's night market, open in the evening, is the place to eat fish and seafood in small stalls according to Wikivoyage (EN); Wikivoyage (DE) notes, however, that neither the products nor the dishes necessarily come from the island. On the north coast, beach restaurants serve seafood and Vietnamese dishes, including a caramelised fish hotpot.
Fish sauce and pepper
Fish sauce is the island's emblematic product, together with pepper. Wikivoyage (EN) says the island lacks the Mekong delta's fertility but produces a well-regarded pepper. Both are common souvenirs.
The island's dog
The Phu Quoc Ridgeback is the local hunting dog, recognisable by the ridge of hair on its back, according to Wikipedia (DE, EN). You see them all over the island.

Free electric buses, taxis and two-wheelers
Free electric buses
A fleet of free electric buses, route 17, links the airport to Duong Dong and then the west coast as far as Grand World according to Wikivoyage (EN, March 2025). Other routes go south and to the ports; frequencies vary: check timetables.
Taxis, apps and two-wheelers
Taxis and ride-hailing apps work from the airport; check the quoted price before you set off. Two-wheelers are easy to rent; take one only if you are comfortable with local driving, as not all roads in the north are paved.
