Airport and getting into town
A small airport very close to the centre, in southern Carinthia
Klagenfurt (KLU)
Klagenfurt Airport (Annabichl) lies north-east of the city, about 4 km from the centre (indicative distance, to be verified); a short bus or taxi ride is enough. It is the smallest of Austria's six international airports according to Wikipedia (DE), with limited connections: many travellers come through Vienna (VIE), Graz (GRZ), Salzburg (SZG), Ljubljana or Venice and continue by train or bus. The main station is about 1 km south of the centre. From Graz, the Koralm tunnel, opened in December 2025, allows a train link of about 45 minutes according to Wikivoyage (EN).
Distances and times are approximate, based on Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (DE, FR); the sources give no precise distance for the airport, so we show it as an indication. Bus and train timetables change: check them before you travel.
Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is the capital of Carinthia and has about 105,000 inhabitants, making it Austria's sixth-largest city. It lies at about 446 m above sea level, at the eastern end of the Wörthersee, surrounded by wooded hills.
It is a university and administrative city at the crossroads of routes to Slovenia and Italy. More than by its monuments, it attracts visitors with its lake: three of the five photos on this page show the Wörthersee, and the fourth, the Pyramidenkogel tower, overlooks it. The historic centre can be covered in half a day.
Lake and landmarks
The Wörthersee, its hills and the city's dragon
The Wörthersee is Klagenfurt's main attraction. The photos in this section show the lake and its surroundings; some were taken outside the city of Klagenfurt, and we say so where relevant. Places such as Minimundus, the lakeside promenade or Neuer Platz are described in text only, except the illustrated Lindwurm.
The Wörthersee from above
This aerial view shows a wooded peninsula linked to the shore by a wooden footbridge, near Pörtschach, on the lake's north shore and outside the city of Klagenfurt. The water is a strong blue-green, and the lake is ringed by hills and villages. In summer the water warms up noticeably, making it a lake for swimming.

Panorama of the lake
Seen from the heights, the lake appears with its islets and sailing boats. The shore is lined with forest-covered hills; many villages and resorts follow one another around the lake.

A quiet shore
The shores of the Wörthersee offer shaded walks with views of the water. This photo shows a bench by the lake under the trees: the kind of place where you stop in the warm season. It illustrates the lake's atmosphere; we do not tie it to a specific beach.

The Pyramidenkogel
The wooden Pyramidenkogel observation tower stands outside the city, about fifteen kilometres from the centre (indicative distance, to be verified). From its platforms you can see the whole lake and the mountains; it is a half-day excursion by bus, car or bike.

The Lindwurm on Neuer Platz
The Lindwurm fountain, on the central square (Neuer Platz), is the city's emblem: according to legend, Klagenfurt was founded after a winged dragon living in the marshes near the lake was killed. The fountain is an example of mannerism. It is the natural starting point for a visit to the city.

Other sights, in text
Minimundus, by the lake, is a park of miniature models of famous buildings from around the world, open from April to October. The Strandbad Klagenfurt, the city beach, can hold several thousand bathers. The neighbouring Europapark offers a large green space by the lake. The Gerlitzen resort, about an hour from the city, has skiing in winter and fine views.
Museums and culture
A regional museum, modern art and Mahler's cottage
Landesmuseum Kärnten
The Landesmuseum, also called the Rudolfinum, is the largest museum in the city and in Carinthia: history, archaeology and nature of the region. A botanical garden, attached to the museum, is on the Kreuzbergl hill.
Modern art
The Museum Moderner Kunst Kärnten shows modern and contemporary art over about 1,000 m². Exhibitions change; check the programme before you go. We give no prices.
Mahler and music
Near Maiernegg, on the lakeshore, Gustav Mahler's Komponierhäuschen is a small museum devoted to the composer, open from May to October according to Wikivoyage (EN). The city also has a theatre and opera house, a symphony orchestra and a music university.
Food and drink
Kärntner Kasnudeln, Reindling and lake fish
Specialities
Kärntner Kasnudeln are ravioli-like dumplings filled with fresh cheese and mint, Carinthia's most famous speciality. Reindling is a ring-shaped brioche with raisins and cinnamon, served at Easter and on festive days. The region's cooking is influenced by neighbouring Italy and Slovenia (the Alpe-Adria spirit).
The lake and terraces
Lakeside restaurants offer freshwater fish, grilled or as fillets, and terraces on the water in summer. In town, the old-town cafés and taverns serve classic Austrian cooking and regional products.
Markets and drinks
Markets in the centre offer seasonal produce and regional specialities; Austrian wines and beers are also easy to find. Book in the evening in summer, when the lake draws crowds.
Getting around
On foot, by bike, by bus and by boat on the lake
In town
Most sights in the centre can be reached on foot. The city bus network, whose main hub is Heiligengeistplatz, serves the city, including the university and the beach; tickets are bought from the driver. The centre is flat and pleasant to explore.
By bike
Cycling is recommended for getting to the beach and the lakeshore: a path runs along the Lend canal from the centre to the lake and continues on the north shore according to Wikivoyage (EN). Rental shops are near the centre.
On the lake and around
In season, scheduled and excursion boats run on the Wörthersee; check timetables and landing stages. For the Pyramidenkogel and the villages of the north shore, take the regional bus, a car or a bike. The car remains the most flexible way to explore Carinthia.
Budget and precautions
A medium budget, higher in peak season by the lake
Price level
Klagenfurt is a medium-budget destination by European standards. In summer, lakeside accommodation is more expensive and should be booked ahead; in town, choice is wider and prices gentler. We give no figures because we could not confirm them from two independent sources.
Flights
The flight remains the most variable cost. SniperAir monitors prices to KLU and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. Graz, Vienna or Ljubljana are other gateways worth watching, with a train or bus ride onward.
Entry rules and precautions
Austria is part of the Schengen area: entry requirements depend on your nationality, so check them on official sites. Also consult the official recommendations of your country of departure. By the lake, keep an eye on the weather: summer thunderstorms are frequent, so leave the water and the tower at the first signs.
When to go
Hot, stormy summers and cold, foggy winters
Winter (December to February)
Cold, with frequent fog in town and snow at altitude. The lake is calm; Gerlitzen offers skiing about an hour away.
Spring (March to May)
Temperatures rise and nature turns green again; swimming is not yet on the agenda, but walks are pleasant.
Summer (June to August)
Hot, with frequent thunderstorms. It is the lake season: swimming, boating, cycling and terraces; crowds are at their peak.
Autumn (September to November)
Colours on the hills, a calmer lake, frequent fog in the off-season; a good time for the city and walks.
Klagenfurt has a humid continental climate: hot summers with frequent thunderstorms, cold winters, with fog in autumn and winter, according to Wikipedia (EN). We give no precise temperatures because we could not cross-check them; consult forecasts before you travel. To enjoy the lake, aim for June to August; for the city and walks, spring and early autumn.
