Paphos International Airport

About 8 km southeast of central Paphos.

Roman mosaics and a royal necropolis

Kato Paphos and its historic center have been UNESCO World Heritage-listed since 1980, thanks to an exceptional concentration of Hellenistic and Roman remains. The Paphos Archaeological Park, once the island's Roman administrative capital, preserves some of the finest Roman mosaics in the Mediterranean, especially those of the House of Dionysos, a 2nd-3rd-century villa whose floors depict the Triumph of Dionysos, the myth of Icarus and the Seasons in extraordinary detail.

The Tombs of the Kings

This monumental rock-cut necropolis, dating to the 4th century BC, mimics the domestic architecture of Macedonian houses, Doric columns included. Despite the name, it's believed to have housed Ptolemaic aristocrats and high officials rather than actual kings.

Aphrodite's Rock and the harbor castle

About 20 km east, on the road to Limassol, Aphrodite's Rock (Petra tou Romiou) marks, according to Greek mythology, the spot where the goddess was born from the sea foam — one of the island's most photographed viewpoints, especially at sunset. In town, Paphos Castle, a small medieval fort of Byzantine origin later rebuilt by the Ottomans, watches over the harbor and hosts the city's cultural festival every year.

A Troodos excursion

Less than an hour's drive away, the Troodos Mountains hold mountain villages, high-altitude vineyards and several UNESCO-listed painted Byzantine monasteries famed for their frescoes — a cool, cultural escape after the coastal ancient sites.

The harbor, the archaeological park and beyond

The historic center and waterfront are easy to explore on foot. For Aphrodite's Rock or a Troodos excursion, renting a car is recommended — Cyprus drives on the left and has no railway network. Local buses connect the airport to the archaeological park and main sights.
