Why visit Kavala

Visit Kavala for a Greece that has nothing to prove. The main seaport of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace rises like an amphitheatre above a harbour facing the island of Thasos. An Ottoman aqueduct strides across the town, a castle crowns the Panagia peninsula, and the UNESCO site of Philippi, old quarters and beaches are all within reach. It suits history lovers and travellers who prefer an authentic port town to a resort.

A name from the horse station

The town was Neapolis in antiquity and Christoupolis under Byzantium. The modern name is traced to the Italian cavallo, horse, after the horse-changing station on the Via Egnatia.

The Kamares aqueduct, Kavala's signature

Free to see, impossible to miss

The aqueduct has older foundations but took its present form in the 16th century under Suleiman the Magnificent, and it carried water from Mount Pangaion. About 25 m high and some 270 to 280 m long, it crosses the town on around 60 stone arches. You can admire it for free from the street.

The old town, the castle and Muhammad Ali

Kavala Fortress

Largely built in the 15th century, the castle crowns the old quarter and gives wide views over the gulf. It is a 15 to 20 minute walk from the harbour; a free tourist train runs from the central square, so check the times locally.

The birthplace of an Egyptian dynasty

Muhammad Ali Pasha, born in Kavala in 1769, founded the dynasty that ruled Egypt. His house, built in the late 18th century, is now a museum in the Panagia quarter.

The Imaret

This Ottoman charitable complex, built between 1817 and 1821 by Muhammad Ali, has become a luxury hotel; guided visits are offered by appointment.

Archaeological museum, tobacco museum and warehouses

The Archaeological Museum

It shows many finds from around Kavala and other ancient settlements, and is worth seeing even without a single spectacular piece.

Tobacco, the town's memory

Kavala was a major tobacco-processing centre. The Tobacco Museum near Kipos Iroon park keeps that story, and the old municipal tobacco warehouse, a mix of Ottoman and neoclassical architecture, hosts exhibitions and the Maritime Museum.

The islands you can reach from Kavala

Thasos

The island lies across the water. Ferries run from Kavala to Prinos (roughly 1 to 2 hours depending on the boat, check locally), and crossings from Keramoti to Limenas are the shortest. Allow a full extra day.

Limnos

Kavala is also a departure port for Limnos and other northern Aegean islands.

Tsipouradika, mezedes and kourampiedes

In Kavala you sit down in a tsipouradiko for tsipouro and mezedes; these places stay open all day, while many tavernas close in the afternoon and serve dinner late, from around 9 pm. Good areas to eat are the street climbing to Panagia, the old Agios Nikolaos quarter and the little fishing harbour of Sfagia to the east.

A sweet speciality

Kourampiedes, butter and almond biscuits, are sold all over town; the plain originals, without added flavourings, are the best, says Wikivoyage. A meal with a drink is usually good value.

Kavala airport, road and bus links

KVA

Kavala Alexander the Great

About 30 km from town, near Chrysoupoli. The flight from Athens takes about an hour, and seasonal charters arrive from Europe. The bus is very limited: a taxi at the official flat rate is simplest, and car rental is available on site.

By road

Thessaloniki is around 160 km away, about 2 hours on the Egnatia Odos motorway or 2 to 2.5 hours by KTEL bus, with a departure roughly every hour. Kavala has no railway station: the nearest is Drama, about 35 km away. Athens is about 680 km.

On foot, city buses and the little train

The centre and the harbour are walkable, but the Panagia old town is on a slope: the free little train from the central square spares you the climb. City buses serve the districts and nearby beaches, and taxis are cheap in town, with a higher night rate; check that the meter is running. A car is only useful for distant beaches and excursions.

A gentle budget for Greece

Kavala is a lightly touristed port town: restaurants, cafes and taxis are generally good value, and shop and restaurant prices are fixed. Seafront tables cost more than those in the lanes. The budget rises mostly in July and August for beach accommodation to the west. We give no prices here because they change.
