The Pelion peninsula, with Volos at its foot

The Pelion peninsula feels like an island that happens to be joined to the mainland. Slate-roofed stone villages cling to the forested slopes of Mount Pelion, which rises to 1,651 m, quiet beaches hide below, and a narrow-gauge steam train still puffs through the woods. At its foot, Volos, the port city of Thessaly at the head of the Pagasetic Gulf, adds its own ritual: plates of seafood mezedes shared over tsipouro.

Plan four to six days: one in Volos and the rest exploring villages and beaches. A rental car is the only practical way to reach them.

Riding the Pelion steam train

01

Board at Ano Lechonia

The morning train sets off on its 60 cm gauge track, a line built in two phases between 1892 and 1903.

02

Pause at Ano Gatzea

A 15-minute stop on a ride of about 90 minutes, crossing the five-arched Kalorema stone bridge and the metal De Chirico bridge at Taxiarchis.

03

Arrive in Milies

Explore the village, then catch the afternoon train back down. Operating days vary with the season, so check with Hellenic Train before you go.

The line was designed by the Italian engineer Evaristo De Chirico, father of the painter Giorgio de Chirico, who was born in Volos.

Coves below the forest

Agios Ioannis, Mylopotamos, Fakistra and more

The Pelion coast is lined with beaches: Agios Ioannis, Mylopotamos (reached by boat or steep steps), Fakistra, Plaka, Damouchari and Horefto. The little Venetian harbour of Damouchari was used in the film Mamma Mia!.

Jason's port, rebuilt

Three ancient cities in one

Volos occupies the site of Demetrias, founded in 293 BC, of Pagasae and of Iolcos, from where Jason launched the Argo. The Neolithic sites of Dimini and Sesklo are nearby. Much of the city was rebuilt after the catastrophic earthquakes of 1955, which makes it the newest of the Greek port cities.

A modern city

Volos joined Greece in 1881 and grew quickly with refugees from Asia Minor in the 1920s. It was the birthplace of the composer Vangelis, hosts the University of Thessaly, founded in 1984, and has the third-largest cargo port in Greece. In 2004 it hosted Olympic football matches.

Tsipouro culture

In a tsipouradiko, tsipouro is served with plates of seafood mezedes, the city's signature way to spend an evening.

The airport town and its ancient port

Nea Anchialos gives its name to the regional airport. The modern town was founded in 1906 by refugees from Anchialos, today Pomorie in Bulgaria, on the ruins of Pyrasos, a port named in the Iliad that had a temple of Demeter and Kore.
