Bari Vecchia
An old town on a peninsula, where life happens in the street
Southern Italy without the museum feel
Bari is the capital of Puglia and a major Adriatic port. Its old town, Bari Vecchia, sits on a peninsula in a maze of lanes where laundry dries from the windows and everyday life spills outdoors. It is a working city rather than a stage set, and that is exactly its charm. The old town is mostly closed to normal traffic, so wandering on foot is the way to see it.

Saint Nicholas
The city that keeps the relics of Saint Nicholas
The relics of Saint Nicholas, brought from Myra in 1087, rest in the Basilica of San Nicola, a Romanesque Apulian church. They make Bari a major pilgrimage site, the saint behind the Santa Claus legend. Entry to the basilica is free, and a small Nicholas museum, the Museo Nicolaiano, stands next door.
Cathedral and castle
Close by, the Cathedral of San Sabino and the Norman-Swabian Castle round out an old-town visit. Allow about an hour and a half for the castle.
A rare page of history
The First Crusade was preached in Bari in 1095, and the Council of Bari met here in 1098. In Roman times the city was known as Barium, a junction between coastal roads and the Via Traiana.
Murat quarter
Theaters, Liberty style and the seafront
South of the old town, the Murat quarter was laid out on a grid in the 19th century. It is home to the Teatro Petruzzelli and the Teatro Piccinni, and the Acquedotto Pugliese palace hides Liberty-style interiors. The seafront promenade, the Lungomare, is made for a stroll facing the Adriatic. The San Nicola stadium hosted matches at the 1990 World Cup.
Eating
Focaccia, panzerotti and orecchiette shaped by hand
In Bari you eat on the street: focaccia barese, panzerotti, the fried turnovers filled with tomato and mozzarella, sgagliozze (fried polenta) and octopus sandwiches. Orecchiette with turnip greens is the classic pasta, and spaghetti all'assassina is another local favorite.
Strada delle Orecchiette
In the lane known as the Strada delle Orecchiette, in the Arco Basso area, local women shape the pasta by hand outside their doors, generally from about 10:00 to 14:00.
Around Bari
Polignano a Mare, Alberobello and Matera
Bari makes an excellent base for exploring Puglia. Polignano a Mare is about 41 km away, roughly 22 minutes by train. Alberobello, with more than 1,000 trulli, lies about 56 km away and is reached by train in under two hours. Matera is around 60 km away. The port also runs ferries to Albania, Croatia, Montenegro and Greece, and Bari works well as a one-night stop before Alberobello or Polignano a Mare.
