Landmarks
Pier, amber and botanical park
Palanga is explored on foot: the pier, Basanavičiaus Street, the park and the beach are a few minutes from one another. The six places below come with photos; others are described further down in text only.
The pier at sunset
Palanga pier is the symbol of the resort: built in 1882 according to Wikivoyage (EN), L-shaped, it became a place for strolling, especially at sunset. It has been damaged several times by storms and ice; the last major reconstruction, in 1998, extended it to about 420 m. You can walk it freely at any hour according to Wikivoyage (EN).

On the pier
The pier is a wooden walkway lined with railings and lamp posts, reaching far out to sea. It extends Basanavičiaus Street, a pedestrian street about 1 km long, lined with bars, restaurants and shops according to Wikivoyage (EN). The atmosphere is very lively in the evening in season.

The pier and its breakwater
On the beach side, the pier crosses a rock breakwater of large stone blocks that protects the shore. On an overcast day the sea is grey, and the Lithuanian coast has a mood quite different from the beaches further south.

Tiškevičiai Palace and the Amber Museum
The neo-Renaissance palace, built in the 1890s for the Tiškevičiai counts according to Wikivoyage (EN), houses the Amber Museum. It is surrounded by a botanical park laid out by a French gardener according to Wikipedia (DE). It is the best-known cultural site in the resort.

Birutė Hill
Birutė Hill, a wooded dune, is tied to a legend: a pagan priestess named Birutė is said to have tended the sacred fire there before being taken away by Grand Duke Kęstutis according to Wikipedia (EN). A small brick chapel stands at the top, among the pines.

The sandy beach
Palanga's beach runs for about 18 km, up to 300 m wide, with dunes according to Wikipedia (EN). The central strip around the pier is very busy at the height of summer; the further you go, the quieter it gets according to Wikivoyage (EN).

Other places worth noting include the old Kurhaus of 1877, now a concert hall, restored in 2013 according to Wikipedia (DE), and the neighbouring resort of Šventoji to the north, with a small harbour. To the south, the Curonian Spit, a short ferry ride from Klaipėda, is a remarkable dune landscape according to Wikivoyage (EN).
Museums and culture
Museums: amber, resort life and culture
The Amber Museum
Housed in Tiškevičiai Palace, it presents amber and its history according to Wikivoyage (EN). Amber is the local speciality; in summer the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, with shorter hours the rest of the year.
The Resort Museum (Palangos kurorto muziejus)
In a former villa, it traces the history of the resort and its seaside life according to Wikivoyage (EN). It is open Wednesday to Sunday according to the same source; check current hours.
The botanical park
Laid out around Tiškevičiai Palace, this wooded park is a quiet stroll; it is open from 10:00 until dusk according to Wikivoyage (EN), and dogs are allowed.
The museums of Klaipėda, nearby
The neighbouring port city has, among other things, a sea museum and an old quarter around its castle. It is about 30 km to the south: an easy trip by bus or car.
Food and drink
Food and drink: smoked fish, market and treats
Specialities to try
On the Lithuanian coast, smoked fish, notably eel, flounder and Baltic herring, is a speciality. You will also find the country's typical dishes: cepelinai (large potato dumplings with meat), potato pancakes, cold beetroot soup in summer, and dark bread. Ice cream and waffles are very popular by the sea.
Markets and streets
Basanavičiaus Street is lined with cheap and cheerful places according to Wikivoyage (EN), which makes it ideal for a quick meal; it can get very crowded in the evening. Supermarkets are near the bus station.
Amber and souvenirs
Baltic amber is the town's souvenir, sold at every price. Wikivoyage (EN) warns against large fake pieces, for instance with a scorpion, sold for a few euros at some stalls; prefer a proper shop or the museum shop. No business name is given here.
