Asturias, Green Spain between the sea and the mountains

Asturias is not a city but a whole region of northern Spain, the heart of what Spaniards call Green Spain: rugged cliffs, beaches and mountains squeezed between the Bay of Biscay and the Cantabrian range. It is the cool, green, food-obsessed alternative to the Mediterranean, home to Spain's first national park, the country's cider culture and a pre-Romanesque architecture found nowhere else.

It also packs three very different cities into less than an hour of travel: monumental Oviedo, seaside Gijón and reinvented Avilés.

Asturias Airport (Ranón)

The region's airport sits about 15 km from Avilés and 40 km from Gijón, with Oviedo a little further away. ALSA buses run direct to Oviedo and Gijón.

Moving between the cities

ALSA buses and regional trains link Oviedo, Gijón and Avilés in under an hour. For the Picos de Europa and the smaller beaches, a car is the better choice.

8th centuryAfter the Battle of Covadonga, the Kingdom of Asturias is born, described as the cradle of the Reconquista

19th centuryCoal and steel transform the region
1918The Picos de Europa become Spain's first national park
1985The pre-Romanesque monuments are listed by UNESCO

Spain's first national park

Shared with Cantabria and Castile and León, the Picos de Europa National Park covers 671 km2 and tops out at Torre de Cerredo, 2,648 meters high. It is home to brown bears, Iberian wolves, Cantabrian chamois, bearded vultures and capercaillie.

The Cares Trail

The classic walk follows the Cares gorge between Caín and Poncebos, about 12 km each way; allow six to eight hours for the round trip.

The Lakes of Covadonga

Near Cangas de Onís, these glacial lakes lie above 1,000 meters. The wider region counts five natural parks and five biosphere reserves on top of the national park.

Oviedo, Gijón and Avilés

Oviedo, the monumental capital

San Salvador Cathedral and its Cámara Santa, the pre-Romanesque Santa María del Naranco, San Miguel de Lillo, San Julián de los Prados and La Foncalada fountain. Oviedo is the Vetusta of Clarín's novel La Regenta, hosts the Princess of Asturias Awards and gathers its cider bars on Calle Gascona.

Gijón, the city by the sea

The old Cimadevilla quarter, the Roman baths of Campo Valdés, Chillida's sculpture Elogio del Horizonte, the Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura and the Atlantic Botanical Garden, plus San Lorenzo beach right in town.

Avilés, the reinvented port

Arcaded streets such as Galiana and Rivero, the Sabugo fishermen's quarter and the Niemeyer Centre, the Brazilian architect's only work in Spain.

Fishing villages and wild beaches

The Cantabrian shore

Beyond San Lorenzo in Gijón, the Asturian coast is a string of coves and villages. Playa del Silencio lies near Cudillero, Llanes has beaches such as Torimbia, and the Ría de Villaviciosa is another stretch worth exploring. A car makes it much easier to hop between them.

Food and drink in Asturias

Asturias is Spain's cider country, and the drink is poured from arm's length in a ritual called escanciar. Pair it with fabada asturiana, the region's bean stew, or a cachopo, two veal fillets stuffed with ham and cheese, then breaded. The region makes more than 40 cheeses, including blue Cabrales matured in caves in the Picos. For dessert, try casadielles or rice pudding.
