Why a Menorca island holiday feels different

A Menorca island holiday is the quiet alternative in the Balearics: unspoiled nature, turquoise coves and prehistory, the opposite of mass-market Ibiza. The island has just under 100,000 inhabitants and is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Since 2023 its prehistoric monuments have also been a World Heritage Site under the name Talayotic Menorca, and the island is described as the only territory in the world to hold both recognitions.

The gateway is Mahón (Maó), the administrative capital, at the eastern end. Ciutadella, in the west, was the capital until the 18th century.

More than 50 beaches and coves

The south coast's famous calas

Menorca counts over 50 beaches and coves. The best known line the south coast: Cala Macarella, about 75 meters wide with white sand framed by greenery, and its little sister Cala Macarelleta, then Cala Turqueta, Cala Mitjana and Cala Mitjaneta. Ciutadella makes a good base, with these coves within a 30-minute drive and seasonal buses in summer. In August the smallest beaches get overcrowded, so arrive early or come off-season.

The island's only airport is a few kilometers from Mahón, linked to the city's main bus terminal by bus line 10.

Getting around

A main road crosses the island from east to west, about 45 minutes' drive from Mahón to Ciutadella. A rental car is almost essential if you want to reach the coves.

A historic trail all the way around the island

The Camí de Cavalls circles Menorca for 185 km in 20 stages, on foot, by bike or on horseback. It dates back to the 14th century, under the Kingdom of Aragon, when it served as a communication and defense route against pirates. Inland, the S'Albufera des Grau natural park protects a landscape of wetlands.

A British gin and a French legend

Gin de Menorca

Menorca's gin was first made for the British sailors stationed on the island in the 18th century. At the Xoriguer distillery in Mahón it is still produced in 300-year-old wood-fired copper stills, and Gin de Menorca has a geographical indication.

Mahonesa

The story goes that the Duke of Richelieu tasted this sauce at an inn in Mahón after the French captured the island in 1756 and took it home as mahonnaise. The origin is disputed, but it is generally credited to Menorca.

Caldereta de langosta

The island's signature dish is a lobster stew slow-cooked in an earthenware pot with onion, tomato, garlic and pepper.
