The city where architecture is the main attraction
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and the second city of Spain after Madrid, with around 1.7 million residents and a metropolitan area of more than three million. It fits into about 101 square kilometres, roughly the same area as Paris.
Few big cities pack so much into that space: a major urban beach, a medieval Gothic Quarter and the world's most visited unfinished basilica. The buildings of Antoni Gaudí are the reason most people come, and the sea, the markets and the football give them reasons to stay longer.
Gaudí
Sagrada Família, the unfinished basilica
The Sagrada Família is the one visit nobody skips. Nearly 4.9 million people went through its doors in 2025. Entry is by timed slot, with a basic ticket, a more expensive option that adds access to the towers, and guided tours.
Opening hours follow the season: 9:00 to 18:00 from November to February (from 10:30 on Sundays), 9:00 to 19:00 in March and October, and 9:00 to 20:00 from April to September. Resellers add a markup to the official rate, so compare with the basilica's own site, and book ahead because slots sell out.
Gaudí
Casa Batlló, Casa Milà and Park Güell

Gaudí's two famous apartment buildings are Casa Batlló and Casa Milà. Casa Batlló is open daily from 9:00 to 22:00 and receives roughly a million visitors a year; the evening slot is slightly cheaper than the standard one.
Park Güell drew about 4.6 million visitors in 2023. The things to look for are the mosaic dragon, the serpentine bench on the Nature Square, the Hypostyle Room and the Gaudí House Museum. Children under 6 enter free, and there is a reduced rate for ages 7 to 12 and for over-65s. As with the Sagrada Família, timed slots sell out, and combined tickets for the two sites are on sale.
| Gaudí site | What to know |
|---|---|
| Sagrada Família | Timed slots; basic ticket, a version with tower access, and guided tours. Open 9:00 to 20:00 from April to September. |
| Casa Batlló | Open daily from 9:00 to 22:00; the evening slot is slightly cheaper. |
| Casa Milà | Gaudí's other famous apartment building. |
| Park Güell | Mosaic dragon, serpentine bench, Hypostyle Room and Gaudí House Museum; children under 6 enter free. |
History
Roman Barcino, the Gothic Quarter and Picasso

The city began as Barcino, a Roman colony founded in the 1st century BC and walled in the 1st century AD. In the 2nd century it had an estimated 4,000 to 8,000 inhabitants. A story credits the Carthaginian Hamilcar Barca with founding it, but that is legend.
The medieval city grew on the same ground, and the Gothic Quarter is its legacy. The Museu Picasso offers several ticket options and is reported to have free-entry slots on Thursday evenings and on the first Sunday of the month; confirm these on the official site before planning around them.
Seafront
Four kilometres of city beaches

Barcelona has about 4 km of beaches inside the city: Barceloneta, Sant Sebastià, Bogatell, Mar Bella and Nova Icària. They were created or reshaped for the 1992 Summer Olympics, held from 25 July to 9 August with 9,356 athletes from 169 national committees. The Games drove the redevelopment of the city towards its waterfront.
Swimming is pleasant from June to October, when the water stays between about 22 and 25 °C. In January the sea is around 13 °C.
Beyond Gaudí
Montjuïc, La Boqueria and Camp Nou
Montjuïc is a 200-hectare hill park with views over the city and the sea, and the site of the 1992 Olympic stadium. For food, Barcelona's cooking is Mediterranean, built on olive oil, tapas and market produce, and La Boqueria is the market to see it laid out.
Football fans head for Camp Nou. The stadium is being rebuilt, so its capacity is reduced compared with the historic figure of more than 99,000: check what is open before you go. Check what is open before you go.
Getting around
Tickets, airport links and the tourist tax
The T-Casual is a ten-trip ticket and works out far cheaper per ride than single metro or bus tickets. One catch: the metro ride to the airport needs its own, more expensive ticket and is not covered by the T-Casual. The Aerobus is the alternative for the airport run.
Barcelona charges a tourist tax per person per night on top of the room rate. Factor it in when you compare accommodation prices.
Day trip
Montserrat, the rocky massif
Montserrat is a rocky massif about 50 km from the city. Allow roughly 90 minutes each way: about an hour by train, then around 20 minutes on the rack railway or the cable car.
With three or four days, the ideal length for Barcelona, a day at Montserrat fits comfortably beside the Gaudí sites and the beach.
