Europe's art capital, and it stays up late

Colourful street and traditional façades in the Malasaña district, Madrid

Madrid is the capital of Spain and the highest capital city in the European Union, set on the Castilian plateau. Around 3.5 million people live within the city limits. There is no sea here, and the city does not miss it: Madrid runs on culture, markets and terraces.

Two things define a stay. The first is art, with three world-class museums lined up along a 1.2 km stretch of the Paseo del Prado, known as the Golden Triangle. The second is the rhythm of the streets, which stay busy late into the night.

The Prado: Velázquez, Goya and El Greco

The Prado is the anchor of the Golden Triangle. Its collection runs to about 7,600 paintings and 1,000 sculptures, and its great strength is Spanish painting, with Velázquez, Goya and El Greco at the centre.

Entry is free for under-18s and for students aged 18 to 25. Everyone else can use the free evening slots: Monday to Saturday from 18:00 to 20:00, and Sundays and public holidays from 17:00 to 19:00. Published ticket prices differ between sources, so check the museum's own site for the current rate.

Reina Sofía and the Thyssen-Bornemisza

The Reina Sofía Museum is the second corner of the triangle. It is free on Mondays and from Wednesday to Saturday between 19:00 and 21:00, and on Sundays from 12:30 to 14:30, and free at all times for visitors under 18, over 65 and students aged 18 to 25.

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum completes the set. If you intend to see all three, the Paseo del Arte card covers the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen and stays valid for one year. A separate museum pass, sold for 48 or 72 hours, takes in more than 50 museums.

The Royal Palace

The Royal Palace is served by Ópera metro station (lines 2 and 5). One guide credits it with more than 2,000 rooms, which gives an idea of the scale even if you only see the state apartments.

Citizens of the European Union and of Ibero-American countries can visit free of charge from Monday to Thursday, from 16:00 to 18:00 between October and March and from 18:00 to 20:00 between April and September. A reduced ticket exists alongside the standard one.

Retiro Park and the Landscape of Light

Retiro Park covers 1.4 square kilometres (350 acres) and is free to enter. It lies about 3 km from the centre and is reached by metro line 2.

In July 2021 UNESCO inscribed the park together with the Paseo del Prado on the World Heritage List under the name "Landscape of Light". It means a morning in the museums and an afternoon under the trees take place inside a single listed site.

Making the free museum hours work

Madrid is unusually generous with free entry, and a short stay can be built around it: the Prado in the early evening, the Reina Sofía a little later, and the Royal Palace on a weekday afternoon for those who qualify.

There is one pitfall. The free slots draw long queues, so arrive ahead of time and accept that two hours is not enough to see a whole collection. Pick a few rooms in advance, or pay for a daytime ticket at the museum that matters most to you and keep the free hours for the others.

What to eat in Madrid

The local classics are simple and filling. The bocadillo de calamares is a fried squid sandwich. Cocido madrileño is a chickpea and meat stew, and callos a la madrileña is the city's tripe dish.

Huevos rotos and churros with chocolate complete the list of things to order at least once.

Metro, airport and distances

Barajas Airport is a short drive from the centre. By metro, line 8 runs between Nuevos Ministerios and Terminal 4. A single metro ticket is inexpensive, and the fare varies with the zone.

The main sights are close together. The three big museums sit on the same boulevard, Retiro is on line 2, and the Royal Palace is served by Ópera station on lines 2 and 5.

Toledo and Segovia by high-speed train

Toledo is 33 minutes from Atocha station on the Avant high-speed train. It is a UNESCO-listed city, the home of El Greco, and has a major medieval cathedral.

Segovia is 28 to 30 minutes from Chamartín station. People come for the Roman aqueduct, the Alcázar castle and cochinillo, the roast suckling pig. Three days is the ideal length for Madrid's museums, parks and neighbourhoods; allow four or five if you add both day trips.
