A La Seu d'Urgell weekend, Romanesque and adventurous

A cathedral town where two rivers meet

A La Seu d'Urgell weekend takes you to a Pyrenean town at nearly 700 meters, where the Segre and Valira rivers meet. It is the capital of the Alt Urgell district, in the province of Lleida, and the gateway to Andorra. Here you get Romanesque stone, mountain cheese and Olympic whitewater, without the crowds of Barcelona. The town has been a bishop's seat since Late Antiquity, and its Santa Maria cathedral is described as the only intact Romanesque cathedral in Catalonia.

A rare link with Andorra

What makes La Seu d'Urgell unique in the world is its bishop: he is one of Andorra's two co-princes, alongside the President of France, an extremely rare form of shared sovereignty. Andorra la Vella lies about 20 km away, along the N-145 that leads to the border.

Inside the 12th-century cathedral

Santa Maria d'Urgell is a three-nave Romanesque basilica from the 12th century, showing Lombard influences, with a main nave 18 meters high and more than 50 decorated capitals. Look for the polychrome carving of the Virgin of Urgell, the town's patron.

Cloister, church and museum on one ticket

The granite cloister is known for its Roussillon-style capitals. A single ticket covers the cathedral, the cloister, the 11th-century church of Sant Miquel and the Diocesan Museum, whose treasure is the Urgell Beatus, an illuminated manuscript. On Sundays visits are limited around services.

The old town

Stroll along Carrer dels Canonges and Carrer Major, with their arcaded houses, to Plaça dels Oms, then climb to the Castellciutat district. The Espai Ermengol town museum also houses the tourist office.

Whitewater left by the 1992 Olympics

La Seu d'Urgell hosted the canoe slalom of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. The Segre Olympic Park, just 200 meters from the center, kept its artificial whitewater canals and now runs rafting, kayaking, hydrospeed and mountain biking. Plan three to six hours there.

On foot

The Valira park is good for easy walks, while the Cadí-Moixeró natural park offers proper hiking. Marked trails such as the PR-C 62 and PR-C 61 each run for just under 10 km, and the Mirador de la Trava may give you a view of Aneto.

Butter, cheese and an ancient October fair

La Seu d'Urgell is called the Catalan cheese capital, and Alt Urgell butter and cheese carry protected designations. On the third weekend of October, the Sant Ermengol Fair, described as one of the oldest documented fairs, hosts the Pyrenean Artisan Cheese Fair, with dozens of cheese makers. The rest of the year, the market on Tuesdays and Saturdays sells peppered sausages and local produce. At the table, try escudella and mountain trinxat.
