Airport and getting into town
An airport close to the centre with its own train station
Geneva Cointrin (GVA)
Geneva's airport lies a few kilometres north-west of the centre, according to Wikivoyage (DE). It has an underground station of its own, and trains reach the central station, Cornavin, in about 6 to 7 minutes according to Wikivoyage (FR, DE), with a service at least every 15 to 20 minutes during the day. Buses 5 and 10 also serve the centre in about 20 minutes; bus 10 runs every 15 minutes per Wikivoyage (EN, ES). A free public transport ticket is handed out in the baggage hall; how long it stays valid differs between sources (one hour or 80 minutes), so check on arrival. The airport has many European flights and a handful of long-haul routes. Zurich and Bern are reached by train in a few hours or less, with services every half hour.
Distances and times are approximate, from Wikivoyage (EN, DE, FR, ES); timetables change by season: check them before you travel. We do not quote fares.
Geneva is Switzerland's second-largest city: 203,856 residents on 16 sq km in January 2021 according to Wikipedia (EN, FR), and just over 211,000 at the end of 2025 per the latest Wikipedia (FR, DE). It sits where the Rhone leaves Lake Geneva, and its metropolitan area, about a million people according to Wikipedia (EN), spills over the French border. The city is French-speaking, with a high share of foreign residents: 48 % in 2013 according to Wikipedia (EN). The Leman Express rail network, fully opened in December 2019, links the canton to the French departments of Ain and Haute-Savoie.
Landmarks
Water jet, old town, lakeside gardens and the Palais des Nations
Geneva was an independent republic before it became a Swiss canton, and John Calvin, who arrived in 1536 and returned in 1541, made it a Protestant Rome, according to Wikivoyage (EN). The International Committee of the Red Cross was founded here in 1863, and several United Nations agencies are based in the city. The places below are illustrated; the Palais des Nations and Carouge close the section.
The Jet d'Eau
The Jet d'Eau, a fountain pumping water up to 140 m into the air, is the city's emblem; it stands at the end of a pier and can be seen from most of the lakeshore, per Wikivoyage (EN, DE) and Wikipedia (FR). It is shut off in strong winds and for maintenance in November, according to Wikivoyage (EN). A walk along the quays, or a ride on one of the yellow harbour boats, gives the best views.

The harbour from above
The harbour is where the lake narrows before the Rhone flows out. The pier, bridges and quays frame it, while the mountains around the city lie on the French side: the Salève, the Jura and, in clear weather, Mont Blanc. A lake cruise shows the whole skyline from the water.

St Peter's Cathedral
At the top of the old-town hill, the cathedral dates from the 12th and 13th centuries according to Wikipedia (ES) and is a landmark of the Reformed tradition. Calvin's auditorium and an archaeological site sit beside it, and the climb up the towers gives a panoramic view over the city and the lake.

The Brunswick Monument
On the Quai du Mont-Blanc, this neo-Gothic tomb was built in 1873 for the Duke of Brunswick as a replica of a tomb in Verona, per Wikivoyage (EN). It stands among the grand hotels of the quay, facing the water jet.

The Flower Clock
In the English Garden by the lake, the Flower Clock is one of the main attractions listed by Wikipedia (FR). Its plant designs change with the seasons, and a Ferris wheel is set up nearby at certain times of year.

Palais des Nations, Reformation Wall and Carouge
The Palais des Nations, built for the League of Nations, is the European seat of the United Nations; Wikivoyage (ES) calls it the organisation's second main seat. The International Reformation Wall, dated 1917 by Wikipedia (DE), is in the Parc des Bastions. Carouge, once part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, keeps an Italian flavour according to Wikivoyage (EN).
Museums and culture
Reformation, watchmaking, modern art and the Red Cross
More than forty museums
Geneva has more than forty museums according to Wikivoyage (FR, ES). The Musée d'Art et d'Histoire shows painting from the early Renaissance, strong in Swiss-French and Impressionist works per Wikivoyage (EN). The MAMCO focuses on modern and contemporary art in a former factory, and the private Patek Philippe Museum fills four floors with watches and clocks.
City and Reformation history
The International Museum of the Reformation is in the Maison Mallet next to the cathedral, and the Maison Tavel in the old town shows Genevan life from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, near the Palais des Nations, recalls the humanitarian history tied to the city. We do not quote ticket prices: hours and fares change.
Science, music and festivals
At CERN in Meyrin, the Science Gateway is an interactive exhibition space open to visitors according to Wikivoyage (EN); tram 18 goes there per Wikivoyage (ES). The Fete de la Musique in June turns the whole city into a stage, and the Escalade festival in early December marks the night of 11 to 12 December 1602 when Geneva repelled the troops of the Duke of Savoy.
Food and drink
Fondue, longeole, cardoon and Lake Geneva perch
Genevan specialities
Longeole, a pork sausage, and the spiny cardoon of Plainpalais are typical local products; according to Wikipedia (DE), both carry a protected designation. Cardoon is traditionally eaten baked with cheese. On the lakeshore, perch fillets are a classic, although Wikivoyage (FR) points out that few of the perch served around the lake actually come from it.
Fondue and sweets
Cheese fondue is mostly a winter dish, including at the Bains des Paquis, where you swim in summer and eat facing the lake, per Wikivoyage (FR, ES). At the Escalade, families smash a chocolate cauldron filled with marzipan vegetables. The city's food scene is also very international, with roughly half the population holding a foreign passport.
Eating for less
Supermarkets sell sandwiches and salads, and kebab shops are plentiful, according to Wikivoyage (FR). Restaurants on the harbour front and quays are the priciest; the Paquis and Plainpalais districts offer more variety.
Getting around
Tram, bus, harbour boats and regional rail on one network
Public transport
TPG runs trams, buses and trolleybuses; the yellow "mouettes" cross the harbour between the two shores, and trains reach the airport and the ends of the canton. The Unireso scheme lets you use the whole network on one ticket. Guests at hotels and hostels often receive a free transport card for the length of their stay, though not every property does, per Wikivoyage (EN).
On foot, by bike and on the lake
The centre is walkable; Wikivoyage (EN) suggests one to two hours for the old town. A free bike loan scheme, Geneveroule, runs in summer according to the same source. CGN boats leave from the Mont-Blanc bridge for other ports on the lake.
Into France
The Leman Express links Geneva with Annemasse and other towns in Haute-Savoie and Ain; Wikipedia (FR) notes that the CEVA link had been planned since 1884. To reach Chamonix, a car or coach is more common; nearby ski resorts are about an hour away by road.
Budget and precautions
One of the most expensive cities in the world
Price level
Geneva is among the most expensive cities in the world: Mercer's 2024 ranking placed it fourth, according to Wikipedia (EN). Wikivoyage (FR) advises travellers on a budget to look for lodging in nearby France, such as Annemasse, which is well connected to the centre. We do not give figures, since we could not cross-check them across two independent open sources.
Currency and payment
The currency is the Swiss franc (CHF), even though the city borders France, where the euro is used. Check your card's exchange and payment conditions before you leave.
Flying and precautions
SniperAir monitors prices to GVA and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. You can also watch Lyon (LYS) and Zurich (ZRH) depending on your plans. Switzerland is not in the European Union but applies the Schengen rules: check the entry requirements for your nationality. The city is safe according to Wikivoyage (FR), but watch for pickpockets near the station and on the quays in summer.
