Start your Grenoble weekend break in the sky

The world's first urban cable car

Every Grenoble weekend break should begin with the 'Bulles', the egg-shaped cable cars that climb from the city centre to the Bastille fortress in about three minutes. The line opened in 1934 as the first urban cable car in the world. From the ramparts, the whole flat valley opens up below you, where the Isère and the Drac meet, ringed by the Chartreuse, Vercors and Belledonne massifs.

The largest city in the French Alps, and a science hub

With around 156,000 inhabitants, Grenoble is the largest city in the French Alps. It is also a major research centre, home to some 21,000 researchers working in fields such as biotechnology and nanotechnology, and to large facilities like the ESRF synchrotron, the Institut Laue-Langevin and the CEA. It hosted the Winter Olympics in 1968 and was named European Green Capital in 2022.

From Cularo to the Dauphins

The Allobroges settlement of Cularo was renamed Gratianopolis after Emperor Gratian in the late 4th century, which gave the city its name. In the 11th century it became capital of the Dauphiné. When the province was sold to France in 1349, the heir to the French throne took the title of Dauphin. On 7 June 1788, the Day of the Tiles uprising here became one of the preludes to the French Revolution.

Great art, mostly free

The Musée de Grenoble holds more than 900 works tracing Western painting from the 13th century to the present day, and is often ranked third in France after the museums of Paris and Lyon. Its permanent collection is free; only temporary exhibitions are ticketed. Below the Bastille, the Musée dauphinois is also free, and the city also has a Musée de la Résistance. Up on the hill, the fort walls themselves are worth the walk.

Trails, canyons and the nearest ski slopes

Grenoble seen from the mountains

The area counts some 865 km of marked hiking trails. Sappey-en-Chartreuse is about 15 minutes away, the Vercors is known for its canyons, including the Furon, and in winter Chamrousse is the nearest ski resort. Back in the city, five tram lines and 46 bus routes make it easy to get around without a car.

Walnuts, gratin and a liqueur made from 130 plants

Grenoble walnuts carry a protected designation of origin, and the region gave its name to gratin dauphinois and ravioles du Dauphiné. Chartreuse liqueur follows a recipe dating from 1605 that blends 130 plants; its cellars are in Voiron. For a historic setting, the Café de la Table Ronde has been serving since 1739.

Annecy, Lyon and the Chartreuse

Annecy is roughly an hour away by car, or about an hour and three quarters by train. Lyon is about 100 km away. The Grande Chartreuse monastery can only be seen from the outside, and the Chartreuse and Vercors massifs both make easy outings from the city.
