Edmonton airport to the south, and the road to the Rockies

YEG

Edmonton International Airport (YEG)

YEG lies about 30 km (19 miles) south of the city centre, in Leduc County, according to Wikivoyage (EN, DE); Wikivoyage (FR) says 10 km, which the other sources contradict. Route 747 links the airport with Century Park LRT station, from where you can reach downtown (Wikivoyage EN, DE). Taxis, ride-hailing and rental cars complete the options. VIA Rail's The Canadian, between Toronto and Vancouver, also stops in Edmonton (Wikivoyage EN, DE).

Distances and times are approximate, based on Wikivoyage, Wikipedia and official sites; timetables change, so check them before you travel. We do not quote fares.

Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, is the northernmost city of over a million people in North America (Wikipedia FR, Wikivoyage EN). It stretches along the North Saskatchewan River at about 668 m (2,192 ft) above sea level (Wikipedia DE, ES). Founded in 1795 as a Hudson's Bay Company trading post, it became a city in 1904 and capital of the province created in 1905 (Wikipedia FR, DE, ES). Nicknamed Canada's Festival City, it is also the gateway to the North and a starting point for Jasper, about 360 km (224 miles) to the west (Wikivoyage DE).

North Saskatchewan River Valley, bridges, the Legislature and downtown

Edmonton is a city of rivers, open space and sharply marked seasons. The places below are illustrated; the Muttart Conservatory, Fort Edmonton Park and Old Strathcona are described in text.

Downtown and the river

Downtown Edmonton overlooks the North Saskatchewan River Valley. Wikivoyage (EN) calls it eclectic, with Government of Alberta buildings and office towers. Several bridges, including the High Level Bridge and the Walterdale Bridge, cross the river. In autumn, orange foliage lines the valley.

Downtown in winter

Winter lasts from November to March (Wikipedia EN): the river freezes, snow covers the banks and the sun stays low, from 8:45 to 16:15 in midwinter according to Wikivoyage (EN). Skies are often very clear: Edmonton gets about 2,300 hours of sunshine a year (Wikivoyage EN).

Autumn in the parks

From mid-September, yellow and orange foliage dresses the treed neighbourhoods and river valley parks according to Wikivoyage (EN). The valley park network has over 100 km (62 miles) of trails (Wikivoyage EN, FR), for walking, running, cycling or cross-country skiing.

The Alberta Legislature Building

The Alberta Legislature Building, in Beaux-Arts style, dates from 1911, after Edmonton was chosen as provincial capital (Wikivoyage EN). Free tours are offered. The grounds, with wading pools and fountains, are open all year and host festivals in summer.

The High Level Bridge

The High Level Bridge, a large lattice railway bridge, spans the North Saskatchewan valley. A vintage streetcar runs across it in summer to link downtown with Old Strathcona, with fine views of the river (Wikivoyage EN).

Muttart Conservatory, Fort Edmonton Park and Old Strathcona

The Muttart Conservatory, four glass pyramids in the river valley, holds several climate zones (Wikivoyage EN). Fort Edmonton Park, a large living-history museum, brings the city's heritage to life (Wikipedia ES). Old Strathcona and Whyte Avenue, with cafés, bars and shops, are the theatre district and home of the Fringe (Wikipedia ES, Wikivoyage DE).

Royal Alberta Museum, Art Gallery of Alberta, TELUS World of Science and Fort Edmonton Park

Royal Alberta Museum

The Royal Alberta Museum, first opened in 1967, presents Alberta's history, with galleries on Indigenous cultures, wild Alberta and natural history (Wikipedia ES, Wikivoyage EN). We do not quote admission prices.

Art and science

The Art Gallery of Alberta explores all forms of art and hosts touring exhibitions (Wikivoyage EN). TELUS World of Science is the city's largest science museum, with a planetarium and an IMAX theatre (Wikivoyage EN).

Living history and performance

Fort Edmonton Park retraces the city's story through historic buildings (Wikipedia ES). The Winspear Centre, a concert hall, and the Citadel Theatre, active for over forty years, make Edmonton a city of theatre and music (Wikivoyage EN). The Fringe, in Old Strathcona, draws over 500,000 visitors and about 1,000 performances (Wikivoyage EN).

World cuisines, Whyte Avenue and chains born in Edmonton

Restaurants and districts

Three dining hubs structure the city: downtown, around 103 Street, 100 Street and Jasper Avenue; Whyte Avenue, trendy and rich in bars; and the West End, around West Edmonton Mall (Wikivoyage EN). Italian food is of high quality, and Chinatown offers affordable dishes.

Specialties and world cuisines

Edmonton has no single signature dish, but the city has excellent Ethiopian, Thai, Indonesian and other restaurants (Wikivoyage EN). Two Canadian chains, Boston Pizza and Earl's, were born here.

Beer and nightlife

A few craft breweries, such as Alley Kat and Yellowhead, supply the bars; pubs and clubs cluster on Jasper Avenue and Whyte Avenue (Wikivoyage EN). Take care at closing time on weekends.

LRT, buses and car: a city of wide avenues

LRT and buses

The light rail network has three lines, the Capital Line, the Metro Line and the Valley Line, complemented by buses (Wikivoyage EN). A vintage streetcar links downtown with Old Strathcona in summer. We do not publish fares: sources are dated or disagree.

Streets and bridges

Streets are numbered north to south, avenues east to west; downtown is centred on 101 Street and Jasper Avenue (Wikivoyage EN, FR). Several bridges cross the river, including the High Level Bridge and the Walterdale Bridge.

Rental car

For Jasper, Elk Island or the Rockies, a car remains the most flexible option. Calgary is about 3 hours by road on Highway 2 (Wikivoyage EN, FR). In winter, check road conditions and equip the vehicle.

A mid-range price level, and cold winters to plan for

Price level

Edmonton sits in the middle of large Canadian cities for a European visitor, with higher prices during the summer festivals. The currency is the Canadian dollar. We do not publish figures: sources are dated or disagree.

Flights and alerts

SniperAir tracks flight prices to YEG and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. Edmonton is also an entry point for Jasper: compare with Calgary (YYC) for Banff.

Safety and weather

The city is comparable to other large Canadian cities; Wikivoyage (EN) advises care after dark in some districts east of downtown and near Whyte Avenue at bar closing time. Winter is cold: pack very warm clothes and lip and hand cream, because the air is dry. Visitors from abroad should check Canada's entry requirements for their nationality.

Bright summers, cold but sunny winters

Harsh winter (November to March)

Long: the January mean is about -10 °C (14 °F) depending on the source, cold snaps to -30 °C (-22 °F) and beyond, rarely lasting more than a day or two according to Wikivoyage (EN). About 28 days a year fall below -20 °C (-4 °F) (Wikipedia DE, ES). Days are very short, from 8:45 to 16:15.

Spring (April to May)

Short and changeable: green foliage appears in May, but cold and snow can return (Wikivoyage EN).

Summer (June to early September)

Mild and bright: average July high 23.5 °C (74 °F) (Wikipedia EN), over 17 hours of daylight at the solstice, and sometimes violent summer storms (Wikipedia ES). Festivals follow one another.

Autumn (mid-September to October)

Days of 10 to 20 °C (50 to 68 °F) and yellow and orange foliage in the valley parks (Wikivoyage EN). Cold returns in November.

Edmonton has a humid continental climate (Dfb) according to Wikipedia (FR), fairly dry and sunny, with about 2,300 hours of sunshine a year (Wikivoyage EN). Its winters are a little less harsh than those of Regina, Saskatoon or Winnipeg (Wikipedia EN, DE, ES). The best time to visit the city runs from June to September; winter suits fans of snow sports and outdoor rinks.
