Canada's capital
Ottawa, a capital you can skate across in winter
Ottawa stands on the Ottawa River, which forms the border between Ontario and Quebec. It had about 1,017,000 residents at the 2021 census (Wikipedia), and nearly 1.5 million in the wider metropolitan area, making it Canada's fourth-largest city. Across the water lies Gatineau, and together they make up the National Capital Region. English and French are both in everyday use, and the city mixes national museums and Parliament Hill with real wilderness a few kilometres away.
Where it sits
Ottawa is roughly 200 km west of Montreal and about 400 km east of Toronto. Its position between the English- and French-speaking regions is one reason it was chosen as the capital.
Four seasons, four reasons to go
Skating on the canal and Winterlude in February, tulips in May, Canada Day on Parliament Hill on 1 July, and autumn colours in Gatineau Park. That calendar is why cheap flights to Ottawa suit almost any month.
How Ottawa became the capital
From Bytown to the Gothic Revival Parliament
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 1826 | Founded as Bytown. Construction of the Rideau Canal starts under Lieutenant-Colonel John By of the Royal Engineers. |
| 1832 | The Rideau Canal opens to commercial shipping. |
| 1857 | Queen Victoria chooses Ottawa as capital, effective 31 December. The city had been renamed Ottawa in 1855. |
| 1867 | Ottawa becomes the capital of the Dominion of Canada at Confederation. |
| 1916 | A fire destroys the Centre Block of Parliament on 3 February; it is rebuilt by 1927 around the Gothic Revival Peace Tower. |
| 2007 | The Rideau Canal joins the UNESCO World Heritage List. |
Parliament Hill
Parliament Hill and Confederation Square
The Peace Tower and the Hill
The Gothic Revival buildings of Parliament crown a bluff above the Ottawa River. Guided tours run all year. In summer the Changing of the Guard takes place on the Hill at 9 am daily from late June to late August, and a free sound-and-light show runs in the evening.

Around the Hill
Nearby stand the Château Laurier, which opened in 1912, Confederation Square and the National War Memorial. Rideau Hall, the Governor General's residence, and 24 Sussex Drive are both in the New Edinburgh district. In total Ottawa counts 27 National Historic Sites. The Gothic Revival Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica, with its silver roof, is free to enter.
Rideau Canal
A canal that turns into a 7.8 km skating rink
The Rideau Canal is described as the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America. In winter it becomes the Rideau Canal Skateway, 7.8 km long, free and open day and night whenever the ice allows. Skate rentals are available, and BeaverTails stands sell the fried-dough pastry right on the ice. Guinness recognised it in 2005 as the largest naturally frozen ice rink.
Check the ice first
The season usually runs from January to early March but depends on the weather. The National Capital Commission posts the ice conditions in real time.
In summer
Once the ice has melted, the canal is walked, cycled or paddled, and pedal boats and canoes can be rented at Dow's Lake.

Climate and seasons
Four very different seasons
Spring
April and May are transitional, with frosty nights still possible in May. In mid-May over a million tulips bloom for the Canadian Tulip Festival, especially in Commissioners Park at Dow's Lake.
Summer
Warm and humid, with July highs around 27 C and heatwaves that can top 33 C. Canada Day on 1 July is celebrated on Parliament Hill.
Autumn
From September to mid-November; late September and October bring colour to Gatineau Park.
Winter
Cold and snowy: January averages near -10 C, cold snaps fall below -20 C and more than two metres of snow falls a year. This is the season for skating and for Winterlude in February.
Ottawa has a humid continental climate: about 21 C on average in July, -10 C in January and close to 900 mm of precipitation a year (Wikipedia FR and ES). The best period runs from May to October; February suits anyone who wants to skate. Winterlude fills three February weekends with ice sculptures, the Skateway and Snowflake Kingdom in Jacques-Cartier Park, over in Gatineau. The Dutch royal family sent 100,000 tulip bulbs in 1945 as thanks for Canada sheltering Princess Margriet, and the first Tulip Festival followed in 1953.
National museums
A museum scene that punches above the city's size
| Museum | What to expect |
|---|---|
| National Gallery of Canada | Canada's national art collection; the giant spider sculpture Maman stands outside. |
| Canadian Museum of History | Across the river in Gatineau, with the history of Indigenous peoples and of the country. |
| Canadian War Museum | Canada's military history, with artefacts and interactive displays. |
| Canadian Museum of Nature | Natural history collections, including dinosaur fossils. |
| Canada Aviation and Space Museum | Aircraft and space exploration. |
| Ingenium – Science and Technology Museum | Interactive displays, including a collection of locomotives. |
| Bank of Canada Museum | Free entry. |
| Diefenbunker in Carp | A Cold War nuclear bunker west of the city. |
Prices and hours change, so check the official sites. Several museums are free on certain evenings, and all Ottawa museums offer free admission on Canada Day (1 July), although they are crowded (Wikivoyage EN).
Food and drink
BeaverTails, shawarma and the ByWard Market
Named after John By, the ByWard Market is an outdoor market and restaurant district with more than 100 places to eat, from street food to smarter tables. It is also a farmers' market; Wikivoyage EN says maple syrup here costs about half the price of the same bottle in souvenir shops.
What to eat
BeaverTails, a fried-dough pastry, are the local icon, and Barack Obama bought one here in February 2009. Poutine, Montreal-style bagels and shawarma (often under 10 Canadian dollars, according to Wikivoyage EN) are other staples; maple syrup is the classic souvenir.
Nightlife
The Market is the city's premier bar district, with cocktail bars, craft-beer pubs and clubs along Clarence and York Streets. Bars close at 2 am on the Ontario side and 3 am in Quebec; the legal drinking age is 18 in Quebec and 19 in Ontario.
Across the river
Crossing into Gatineau adds a Quebec flavour to the trip. Note that you also change bus network: OC Transpo in Ontario, STO in Gatineau.
Nature
Gatineau Park and beyond
Gatineau Park
A few kilometres north of downtown, the park covers more than 361 km2, with 165 km of hiking trails and 90 km of mountain-bike trails. Highlights include the Champlain Lookout, Pink Lake and the Mackenzie King Estate. In autumn its southern sector often fills up on weekends; in winter it offers cross-country skiing and downhill at Camp Fortune.
Further out
Algonquin Provincial Park is about 150 km away (Wikivoyage DE), and Montreal is two to three hours by road.
Getting around
Buses, O-Train, bikes and walking
OC Transpo runs the buses and the O-Train (Lines 1, 2 and 4), while STO serves Gatineau. Children under 12 ride free, and a single fare stays valid for 90 minutes (Wikivoyage EN). Fares change regularly, so check the OC Transpo site before you travel, or use a Presto card for a longer stay.
On foot and by bike
Downtown is easy to walk. The Capital Pathway network has more than 170 km of multi-use paths, and weekend Bikedays close some roads to cars from late May to early September (Wikivoyage EN).
Trains and taxis
Taxis are easy to find. The VIA Rail station is about 4 km east of downtown, under ten minutes by car, taxi or O-Train.
Getting to Ottawa
Macdonald-Cartier International Airport
Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International
The airport handled about 4.9 million passengers in 2025 (Wikipedia). To Europe it has year-round nonstop flights with Air France to Paris Charles de Gaulle and with Air Canada to London Heathrow, plus a seasonal Air Transat flight to London Gatwick.
The airport lies south of downtown, roughly 10 to 15 km depending on the source, and about half an hour by road (Wikivoyage DE). O-Train Line 4 has served Airport station inside the terminal since January 2025 and connects with the other lines for downtown; bus route 105 also runs day and night since August 2025 (Wikipedia). A taxi to downtown hotels is around 30 Canadian dollars (Wikivoyage EN and DE), as a rough guide.
| Journey | Approximate distance or time |
|---|---|
| Airport to downtown | roughly 10 to 15 km, about half an hour |
| Ottawa to Montreal | about 200 km, 2 to 3 hours by road; about 2 hours by VIA Rail |
| Ottawa to Toronto | about 400 km, about 4.5 hours by road; 4.75 to 5 hours by train |
| Ottawa to Kingston | about 2 to 2.5 hours by train or bus |
| Downtown to Gatineau | a few minutes, across the river |

Budget
A mid-to-upper-range destination
Ottawa is a mid-to-upper budget capital, especially in summer and during the big festivals. For orientation, Wikivoyage EN and DE put a dorm bed at around 30 to 36 Canadian dollars and a mid-range room at around 130 to 155 Canadian dollars; these figures are dated and vary a lot with the season. Listed prices often exclude tax, which is 13% in Ontario (Wikivoyage DE).
Saving money
Stay on the Gatineau side, which is generally cheaper than Ottawa, use the free museum evenings, eat at the market or shawarma places, and skate the canal for free.
