Cheap flights to Montreal, a European-flavoured city in North America

Booking cheap flights to Montreal takes you to an island at the meeting point of the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa rivers, built around Mount Royal, the hill that gave the city its name. Montreal is a largely French-speaking metropolis on a continent that mostly speaks English: open with a "Bonjour" before switching to English, and expect metro signs and announcements in French only.

What makes it unique

A 17th-century old town, bagels and smoked meat, a festival calendar that peaks in summer and a winter life partly lived underground. Montreal has been a UNESCO City of Design since 2006 and counts 50 National Historic Sites of Canada, more than any other Canadian city.

From Ville-Marie to the Old Port

Montreal was founded as Ville-Marie on 17 May 1642 and incorporated as a city in 1832. Its cobblestone streets still form the heart of Old Montréal, which runs down to the Old Port, where La Grande Roue de Montréal Ferris wheel turns above the river.

Notre-Dame Basilica

The great church of Old Montreal is famous for its gilded altar and deep blue vaulted ceiling. Guided tours of 20 or 60 minutes, in French and English, are included in admission; the longer one takes you up to the second balcony and into part of the crypt.

The Underground City, Montreal's winter secret

When Place Ville Marie opened in 1962, it became the first link of what is now the RESO, or Underground City, listed by Guinness World Records as the largest underground pedestrian network in the world. It connects about 2,000 shops, 200 restaurants, hotels and universities through more than 120 entrances, so you can cross downtown in January without stepping outside.

A city that lives outdoors from June to August

Summer is high festival season. Montreal hosts the International Jazz Festival and Just for Laughs, often described as the largest festivals of their kind in the world, and Montreal Pride runs from late July to early August.

Where to go out

The Plateau Mont-Royal and Mile End are the trendy districts, while the Quartier Latin and Le Village fill up at night. Westmount is the upscale residential enclave on the slopes of the mountain.

Olympic legacy

Expo 67 and the 1976 Summer Olympics left their mark: Parc Jean-Drapeau occupies the Expo islands and houses the Montreal Casino, while the Olympic Stadium in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve sits next to the Biodome and the Botanical Garden.

Day trips from Montreal

Quebec City is 258 km away, 3 to 3.5 hours by train or car, and deserves two extra days. Ottawa, the federal capital, is 196 km by road. For mountains and skiing, Mont-Tremblant in the Laurentians is about three hours by bus, and the Eastern Townships are also within reach.
