A piece of Europe in North America
Quebec City, the only walled city north of Mexico
Quebec City is the capital of the French-speaking province of Quebec, and nearly every English-language guide opens with the same line: it is the only city north of Mexico whose fortifications still stand. Its old town, Old Quebec, has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985. The official tourism site calls it a collection of architectural treasures unlike anything outside Europe, which is exactly why cheap flights to Quebec City make for such a surprising trip.
Upper Town and Lower Town
The city sits on the St. Lawrence River, with the Upper Town on the clifftop and the Lower Town down by the water. The two are linked by a funicular and by the steep Breakneck Stairs. In tourist areas staff nearly all speak English, but French is the language of daily life.
Four centuries of history
From Champlain to the Plains of Abraham
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1608 | Samuel de Champlain founds Quebec on 3 July at Place-Royale, the first French settlement in North America. The 400th anniversary was celebrated in 2008. |
| 1639 | The Ursulines monastery and the Hôtel-Dieu hospital are founded, the latter described as the oldest hospital in the Americas north of Mexico. |
| 1759 | The Battle of the Plains of Abraham on 13 September ends French rule; the city passes to Britain in 1763. |
| 1893 | The Château Frontenac opens. The Quebec Conferences of 1943 and 1944 later bring Roosevelt and Churchill here. |
| 1985 | Old Quebec is added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. |
Upper Town
The Château Frontenac, Dufferin Terrace and the ramparts
The Château Frontenac
Designed by architect Bruce Price and opened in 1893, this castle-style hotel has 610 rooms and has been a National Historic Site since 1981. It is often billed as the most photographed hotel in the world, a boast no one has officially verified, but its silhouette does dominate every view of the city.

Dufferin Terrace
Right below the Château, this long boardwalk looks out over the St. Lawrence and across to Île d'Orléans. It is the classic first stroll in Old Quebec.
Walls, gates and the Citadel
The fortifications run about 4.6 km, with four gates and a star-shaped Citadel that is still an active military base. Wikivoyage points out that Campeche in Mexico is the only other North American city with a fully preserved fortification system.
Churches and the Parliament
Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral and the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, the first Anglican cathedral built outside the British Isles, stand a few streets apart. The Parliament Building offers free tours in French and English on non-sitting days.
Lower Town
Place-Royale and Petit-Champlain, where it all began
Place-Royale is where Champlain landed and founded the settlement, and the stone church of Notre-Dame-des-Victoires on the square is considered the oldest in North America. A few steps away, rue du Petit-Champlain is billed as North America's oldest shopping street, with boutiques and galleries in 17th- and 18th-century buildings.
Two museums worth the detour
The Musée de la civilisation sits near the old port, while the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec is on the edge of the Plains of Abraham and includes the former Quebec City prison. For the best skyline view, take the short ferry across to Lévis.

Winter and Carnival
A real Canadian winter, with Bonhomme in charge
Winters are cold and genuinely snowy, which is part of the appeal. The Quebec Winter Carnival has run every year since 1955, with its mascot Bonhomme Carnaval, an ice palace, a canoe race across the frozen St. Lawrence, night parades and snow sculptures on the Plains of Abraham. The 2026 edition ran from 6 to 15 February.
Hot drinks and ice hotels
The Carnival's signature drink is the Caribou, a hot alcoholic mix. The official tourism site also promotes the Hôtel de Glace, the ice hotel, along with skating and snowshoeing.
Summer
Festival season, with the Festival d'été de Québec music festival, long terraces and highs in the mid-20s C.
Autumn
Fall colours make this a favourite season for walking the ramparts and the Plains of Abraham.
Winter
January highs around -7 C and lows near -17 C, with heavy snow from November to April. Provincial law requires snow tyres from 15 December to 15 March.
Spring
A short transition season, with the thaw making it the least spectacular time to visit.
Food and the neighbourhoods
Maple taffy, poutine and the Saint-Jean-Baptiste scene
Traditional Québec cooking is the draw here, and the official tourism site highlights maple taffy poured over snow. The Marché du Vieux-Port is a good place to sample local products.
Where to go out
Saint-Jean-Baptiste is the bohemian neighbourhood, Montcalm leans towards arts and culture, and Saint-Roch is known for food, tech and fashion. Pubs in the Upper Town tend to close around 1 or 2 am.
Around Quebec City
Montmorency Falls and Île d'Orléans
Montmorency Falls
At 83 m, the falls stand 30 m higher than Niagara. A suspension bridge crosses the crest, and in winter a frozen sugar-loaf cone builds up at the base. A cycle path, the Corridor du Littoral, runs there in one to two hours.
Île d'Orléans
Just east of the city and linked by a bridge, this 34 km island is nicknamed the Garden of Quebec for its strawberries, apples, maple syrup, wine and cheese. The whole island is a National Historic Site.
Montreal
Allow 2.5 to 3 hours by road, or around 3.25 hours by VIA Rail train or Orléans Express bus.
Getting to Quebec City
Jean Lesage International Airport
Québec City Jean Lesage International
About 20 minutes by car from downtown, with RTC buses 76 and 80 and taxis at a flat fare.
A flight from New York or Toronto takes about an hour and a half. Once in town, Old Quebec is compact and best explored on foot, though the slope between Upper and Lower Town is steep.
