Atlantic capital
Things to do in Halifax, the Maritimes' big city
Capital of Nova Scotia and the largest municipality in Atlantic Canada, Halifax lives facing the sea. A historic port, a home base for Canada's Atlantic naval fleet and a busy cruise stop, it has a coastal identity, while its universities, including Dalhousie and Saint Mary's, bring a young energy and a lively live-music scene.
A harbour with a long story
The city stretches along the Atlantic around Halifax Harbour. Across the water, Dartmouth is linked by bridges and by a ferry that dates back to 1752 and is said to be the oldest continuously running saltwater ferry in North America.
History
A city shaped by the sea
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1749 | Governor Edward Cornwallis founds Halifax as a British military base on the peninsula. |
| 1912 | After the Titanic sinks, Halifax is the port from which victims are brought ashore; many are buried in the city's cemeteries. |
| 1917 | Two ships collide in the harbour and the Mont-Blanc, loaded with explosives, blows up: the Halifax Explosion kills nearly 2,000 people and was the largest man-made explosion before nuclear weapons. |
| 1928 to 1971 | Pier 21 receives around a million immigrants arriving in Canada. |

The Public Gardens
In the centre of the city, the Halifax Public Gardens were laid out in 1867 in Victorian style and have been a National Historic Site since 1984.
