Visiting Victoria, the capital of British Columbia

At the southern tip of Vancouver Island, Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and the southernmost major city in Western Canada. Named after Queen Victoria and built around a harbour, it is compact, walkable and unmistakably British in flavour, with heritage architecture, afternoon tea and gardens. It makes a calm counterpoint to Vancouver, with its mountains and big-city energy.

The Garden City

Its nickname comes from the gardens and parks that Canada's mildest climate allows to flourish. Victoria is also the driest spot on the British Columbia coast, because the Olympic Mountains across the water shield it from much of the rain.

22 hectares of gardens born in an abandoned quarry

In Brentwood Bay, about 20 km north of downtown, Butchart Gardens began in 1904 when Jennie Butchart set out to transform the exhausted limestone quarry that supplied her husband's cement business. A National Historic Site of Canada since 2004, the property is still family-owned, covers 22 hectares and draws more than a million visitors a year.

One garden, many worlds

The Sunken Garden, the Japanese, Italian and Mediterranean gardens and the rose garden follow one another along the paths, with about a million plants set out each year and more than 50 gardeners at work.

Getting there

From downtown, bus 75 takes about 50 minutes (Wikivoyage EN); admission is charged and fares vary with the season, so check the official site before you go.

The heart of Victoria, on foot around the harbour

The Parliament Buildings

The Inner Harbour is easy to explore on foot, with ferries, floatplanes and water taxis coming and going. The Parliament Buildings, finished in 1897, stand above the water, and after dark about 3,000 lights outline the facade and rooftops.

The Fairmont Empress

Opened in 1908 beside the harbour, this historic hotel is known for its architecture and for its traditional afternoon tea, with a long list of loose-leaf teas.

The Royal BC Museum

Devoted to the natural and Indigenous history of the region, with totem poles on display and Thunderbird Park next door.

Beacon Hill Park

A large park in the middle of the city, about 20 minutes on foot from the Inner Harbour, with a 38.8 m totem pole raised in 1956.

The second oldest Chinatown in North America

Behind the Gate of Harmonious Interest, Victoria's Chinatown is the second oldest in North America after San Francisco's. Fan Tan Alley, one of its lanes, is promoted as the narrowest commercial street on the continent and is lined with tiny shops and galleries.

A table between harbour and countryside

Afternoon tea

The city's signature culinary experience, at the Fairmont Empress or at Butchart Gardens, where it is served in the former Butchart family residence. Reservations are recommended.

Seafood and farm-to-table

Restaurants around the Inner Harbour lean on fresh seafood and local produce, and Fisherman's Wharf has floating houseboats and seafood to eat by the water.

Craft breweries and cider

Craft breweries and the Cowichan Valley wine country sit nearby, and the Saanich Peninsula has a cider house worth the short trip out of town.

Evenings

Victoria is a city for harbour walks rather than nightclubs: stroll the lit waterfront, then dine facing the water.

Other tables

The Abkhazi Gardens teahouse serves afternoon tea and light lunches (Wikivoyage EN). In Oak Bay, nicknamed the "Tweed Curtain", you find teahouses and British sweet shops (Wikipedia DE). Pub fish and chips is another classic (Wikivoyage EN).
