An airport about 24 km north-east, half an hour from the centre

MTY

Monterrey - General Mariano Escobedo

Monterrey International Airport is in the municipality of Apodaca, about 24 km north-east of the city; Wikivoyage (EN) gives about 30 minutes from the centre. It serves most major Mexican cities and several US cities, especially in Texas. Taxis, ride-hailing, an express bus to the Y Griega station of the Metrorrey metro and car rental agencies are available.

Distances and times are indicative, taken from Wikipedia (EN, DE) and Wikivoyage (EN, ES, DE, FR); they vary with traffic.

Monterrey is the capital of Nuevo León state, at about 540 m above sea level, at the foot of the Sierra Madre Oriental. It has about 1.14 million inhabitants in the city itself in 2020 and more than 5 million in the metropolitan area. For travellers arriving from North America by road, Laredo (Texas) is about 220 km away.

A city of skyscrapers at the foot of a twin-peaked mountain

Permanently founded on 20 September 1596 by Diego de Montemayor after two earlier attempts, Monterrey is an industrial and university metropolis. Its centre keeps historic landmarks: the Macroplaza, a vast esplanade counted among the world's great squares, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the Faro del Comercio and the Barrio Antiguo, a district of 17th- to 19th-century houses now home to bars, cafés and galleries.

The Cerro de la Silla

This twin-peaked mountain, whose profile recalls a saddle, is the city's great symbol and one of its official emblems. It towers over the skyscrapers and residential districts and can be seen almost everywhere; hiking is possible there.

The Santa Lucía Riverwalk

This artificial canal of about 2.5 km, built between 1996 and 2007, links the Macroplaza with Fundidora Park. You can follow it on foot, by bike or by boat, with the Cerro de la Silla as a backdrop.

Fundidora Park

The park occupies the site of a former steelworks, whose red-brick chimneys and buildings it keeps. Its lawns, canals and museums make it the residents' favourite place to relax, at the end of the Paseo Santa Lucía. It hosted the Universal Forum of Cultures in 2007.

Parks, caves and climbing around the city

Cumbres de Monterrey

The Cumbres de Monterrey National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2006, surrounds the city with oak and pine forest. The Chipinque ecological park offers hiking trails in this area.

Caves and climbing spots

The García Caves, discovered in 1843, hold stalagmite formations and snail fossils. La Huasteca, west of the city, is a well-known climbing area. These outings are day trips by car, bus or with an agency.

Contemporary art, northeast history and steel

MARCO and the Macroplaza museums

MARCO, the contemporary art museum, and the Museo de Historia Mexicana stand near the Macroplaza, close to the Santa Lucía Riverwalk. The Museo del Noreste is also among the city's museums.

Regional history

The Museo del Obispado, in the former bishop's palace on Cerro del Obispado, offers views over the city and regional collections; the giant national flag flies on the hill.

Steel and children

The Museo del Acero Horno3, in Fundidora Park, tells the city's steelmaking story. The Papalote Museo del Niño is aimed at families. Check hours and closing days; we give no admission prices, which change.

Cabrito, machacado and carne asada

Typical dishes

Cabrito, young goat slowly roasted over embers, is Monterrey's most traditional dish. Machacado con huevo, shredded dried beef with eggs, is another northern classic. On weekends, family carne asada is an institution; arrachera (grilled skirt steak) and discada, meats cooked on a disc, are also popular.

Sweets and drinks

Glorias and obleas, goat-milk sweets, cajeta, capirotada (a bread-based dessert) and semita, an unleavened bread, complete the table. Café de olla often goes with a meal.

Where to sit down

Look for the cabrito restaurants in the centre and neighbourhood taco stands. On weekends a popular flea market, La Pulga del Puente del Papa, offers local finds.

Metro, Ecovía buses, taxis and ride-hailing

Metrorrey and Ecovía

Metrorrey, the light-rail metro, is clean and cheap but covers a limited area; Line 3 links the centre with Fundidora Park. Ecovía is a bus line in dedicated lanes along Avenida Ruiz Cortines. A transport card is often needed; find out how to pay.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Ride-hailing apps operate. Taxis have a meter: ask for it to be used, or prefer ride-hailing to a taxi hailed in the street.

Staying careful

The centre, Fundidora Park, the Barrio Antiguo and the Macroplaza are busy areas. As in any large city, watch your belongings, avoid driving at evening rush hour and check the official travel advice of your country of residence before departure.

An affordable to mid-range budget compared with Europe

The metro, buses, neighbourhood meals and many museums stay affordable, while upscale hotels and restaurants cost more, as in any business metropolis. We give no figures, because prices change with the season and the exchange rate.

The plane ticket remains the most variable part of a trip. SniperAir watches fares to MTY and compares them with the route's price history.
