Airports and the border
An airport right on the border, about 8 km from downtown
Tijuana - General Abelardo L. Rodríguez
The airport lies about 8 km east of downtown, in the Otay Centenario district, just south of the US border. By taxi, Wikivoyage lists roughly 15 minutes to Zona Río and 25 minutes to Zona Centro; a blue-and-white bus serves downtown in under 30 minutes. Taxis are plentiful: agree on the fare before getting in if the car has no meter.
San Diego International (US side)
Tijuana lies about 30 km south of downtown San Diego. Many travellers combine the two airports by crossing the border on foot or by car; bring a passport and keep a generous margin before your flight.
Distances and times are indicative, taken from Wikivoyage (EN, ES, FR) and Wikipedia (EN, ES, DE); times vary with traffic and border waits.
The Cross Border Xpress (CBX) bridge
CBX is a covered pedestrian bridge of about 120 m linking a terminal in Otay Mesa, on the San Diego side, with Tijuana airport's terminal across the border. It is reserved for travellers holding a boarding pass for a flight to or from Tijuana. Opened to passengers in December 2015, it is a paid crossing. Check the current fares and conditions on the official website before planning around it.
Crossing the border other ways
San Ysidro is one of the busiest border crossings in the world; waits on foot or by car vary greatly from day to day. Otay Mesa and Tecate are alternatives, Tecate being about 30 minutes to the east. Check entry and exit requirements with official authorities.
Landmarks
A spherical dome, an arch and a cathedral
Tijuana is Baja California's largest city and one of Mexico's most populous: about 1.8 million people in 2020, over 2 million in the metropolitan area. Founded in 1889, it grew with American Prohibition in the 1920s, then with industry and cross-border trade. A mix of cultures, music and cooking makes it a city of passage and arrival.
The CECUT cultural centre
The Centro Cultural Tijuana, opened in 1982, is recognisable by its large sand-coloured sphere, which houses an OMNIMAX cinema. The complex, in the Zona Río, also holds the Museo de las Californias, exhibition halls and a garden. It is the city's best-known cultural landmark.

The Arco Monumental
A large cable-stayed metal arch is one of the city's most photographed symbols. It stands out against the sky and is a favourite photo stop, like the nearby tourist district of Avenida Revolución, the historic strip of bars, shops and street musicians.

Other landmarks
The Sanctuary-Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, built between 1949 and 1956; the Casa de la Cultura, opened in 1930; and the tower of the Agua Caliente casino, a legacy of the 1920s. Avenida Revolución concentrates the tourist bustle, with terraces and craft shops.
Beaches and vineyards nearby
Rosarito and the Guadalupe Valley, two day trips
These two places are not Tijuana itself: they are nearby destinations, very popular for a day out or a weekend.
Playas de Rosarito
Playas de Rosarito lies just south of Tijuana, about 30 minutes by car according to Wikivoyage (ES). Its broad sandy beach and long wooden pier make it a good spot for sunset.

The rocky coast
South of the city, the Pacific coastline alternates cliffs, dark-sand beaches and rough seas. People come mostly for the views from the cliff edge.

The Guadalupe Valley
The Guadalupe Valley, about 37 km from the city of Ensenada according to Wikipedia (ES), is Mexico's main wine region. It has dozens of estates and hosts harvest festivals; you can taste wines and local food among vineyards and hills. From Tijuana, allow between one and two hours by road depending on the source and traffic.

Museums and culture
Californias history, science and art
The CECUT and the Museo de las Californias
The cultural centre tells the region's story from pre-Hispanic times to today in the Museo de las Californias; its halls and spherical cinema round off the visit.
El Trompo
The interactive El Trompo museum, opened in 2008, offers science and technology exhibits for children and families.
Wax, art and stages
A wax museum, El Cubo centre (art, classical music and events), the Casa de la Cultura and the Caracol garden round out the offer. Check hours and closing days before you go; we give no admission prices, which change.
Food and drink
Caesar salad, tacos, seafood and Baja Med cooking
The Caesar salad
Tradition says the Caesar salad was born in Tijuana in the 1920s, in a restaurant run by Caesar Cardini; a date, 4 July 1924, is often quoted, but sources do not all agree.
Tacos and street food
Carne asada tacos are a classic, along with street churros. Pick stalls busy with locals. The Hidalgo market sells fresh produce and crafts.
Baja Med, beer and wine
Baja Med cuisine, Baja California's gastronomic movement, centres on Tijuana. The city also has an active craft-beer scene and tasting rooms for Guadalupe Valley wines.
Getting around
Taxis, buses and common-sense caution
Taxis
Taxis are plentiful. Libre taxis have a meter; others do not, and the price must be agreed in advance. Shared taxis follow a fixed route, with a fare per passenger.
Buses and minibuses
Blue-and-white buses and local minibuses, called "calafias", serve the city cheaply. The Cinco y Diez junction is a major transport hub.
Staying careful
As in any large city, watch your belongings and avoid isolated areas at night. Check the official travel advice of your country of residence before departure.
Budget
A fairly affordable budget compared with Europe
Day to day, Tijuana is generally cheaper than European capitals: tacos, local transport and taxis stay affordable, while upscale restaurants and accommodation in tourist areas cost more. US dollars are widely accepted in Tijuana. We give no figures, because prices change with the season and the exchange rate.
The plane ticket remains the most variable part of a trip. SniperAir watches fares to TIJ and compares them with the route's price history.
