Flagstaff lies in northern Arizona at about 2,100 m (roughly 6,900 ft) above sea level, at the foot of the San Francisco Peaks. It had 76,831 residents at the 2020 census (Wikipedia) and is home to Northern Arizona University, which gives it a college-town feel. Crossed by Route 66, it mixes historic brick buildings, breweries, outdoor shops and quick access to several national parks.

Nature and parks
Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater, Wupatki, Sedona and the Grand Canyon
Around Flagstaff several national monuments can be reached by car: Walnut Canyon, with its cliff dwellings, about 19 km east; Sunset Crater Volcano, about 31 km north-east; Wupatki and its pueblo ruins, about 70 km north-east. A combined seven-day pass is offered for these three sites. Sedona is about 48 km south, roughly an hour's drive through Oak Creek Canyon.
Grand Canyon. The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is about 142 to 144 km north, around 80 miles: a feasible day trip, though better with a night on site. Meteor Crater, further east, is another classic outing.

Arizona Snowbowl and the San Francisco Peaks
Arizona Snowbowl is one of the state's three ski resorts, on the slopes of the San Francisco Peaks. In summer these mountains offer hikes up to Humphreys Peak (3,851 m, about 12,637 ft), the highest point in Arizona, about 16 km north of town.
Most mountain trails are walked from June to October; snow can linger at altitude.

Car, bus and train
Downtown is walkable, but most parks and viewpoints are tens of kilometres away: a rental car is almost essential to enjoy the region. Interstates I-40, east-west along old Route 66, and I-17 to Phoenix meet at Flagstaff. A bus network, Mountain Line, serves the town; Greyhound buses and the Amtrak train also stop downtown.
Tip. In winter, check road conditions and equip the vehicle: snow can close mountain roads, and Flagstaff receives more than two metres of snow a year.

Mid-range, pricier in high season
Flagstaff is a mid-range destination by US standards.
