First impressions
A peninsula city ringed by a UNESCO lagoon
Founded in 1854 under the name Port-de-France, Nouméa is the only real urban centre in New Caledonia and home to nearly half the territory's population. The city occupies a peninsula on the south-west coast of Grande Terre, wrapped almost entirely by a turquoise lagoon that ranks among the largest coral lagoons in the world. Its streets carry a layered history — French colonists, deported convicts, and Kanak, Vietnamese and Indonesian communities who arrived as indentured labourers in the 20th century all left their mark. Climb Mont Coffyn or Mont Vor at sunset and the whole picture comes into focus at once: a compact, human-scale town encircled by reef and open water.
Anse Vata & Baie des Citrons
Two bays, two very different beach moods
Anse Vata, a two-kilometre stretch of pale sand, is where windsurfers and kitesurfers gather, and it's also the departure point for water-taxis heading out to Îlot Canard and Îlot Maître, just offshore in the lagoon. A short walk away, the more sheltered Baie des Citrons is lined with banyan trees and carries most of the city's restaurants and bars — its calmer, shallower water makes it the beach families tend to pick.

Don't miss
The Tjibaou Cultural Centre
Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and opened in 1998 following the Matignon Accords, the Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre honours the Kanak independence leader assassinated a decade earlier. Ten wood-and-metal "cases", inspired by traditional Kanak great huts and engineered to use prevailing winds for natural ventilation, house an art centre, a museum, a library and a performance hall across eight hectares bordering mangrove, about 15 minutes from downtown. It's the single best starting point for understanding the history and living traditions of the archipelago's first people before heading further afield.

Day trips & local life
Lagoon islets and the Port-Moselle market
New Caledonia's lagoon, UNESCO World Heritage listed since 2008, is best sampled on a day trip to one of its coral islets by water-taxi from Anse Vata — Îlot Canard, with its natural aquarium of reef fish just off the beach, and the wilder Îlot Maître are the two favourites. In town, the covered Port-Moselle market fills every morning, and especially on weekends, with lagoon fish, tropical fruit and Kanak craftwork in a lively, unhurried atmosphere. The Aquarium des Lagons, open since 1956 near Pointe de la Voile, is still the territory's leading paid attraction, drawing around 100,000 visitors a year.
