Auckland by the numbers: two harbours, one volcanic field
New Zealand's largest city sits on a narrow isthmus pinched between two harbours, the Pacific to the east and the Tasman Sea to the west, and is home to roughly a third of the country's entire population. Around fifty dormant volcanic cones — some now buried under suburbs or quarried away, including part of the site later used for the airport — shape the skyline and the parks in equal measure. Tāmaki Makaurau
"The place desired by many", a name with deep roots
Auckland's Māori name, Tāmaki Makaurau — roughly "Tāmaki desired by many lovers" — reflects a region so fertile that its volcanic soils drew Māori settlement from around 1350 onward and were long fought over between competing iwi (tribes), who fortified individual volcanic cones as pā, hilltop defensive villages. Traces of these terraced earthworks are still visible today on several of the city's volcanic reserves, most famously on Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill.
Rangitoto, the youngest cone in the field
Visible from almost every vantage point in the city, Rangitoto Island rose from the sea roughly 600 years ago in the volcanic field's most recent eruption. A half-day ferry trip from downtown gets you to a summit hike across black lava rock, rewarded with one of the best panoramas over the Hauraki Gulf.
The Sky Tower
328 metres above the City of Sails
Completed in 1997 and designed by Craig Craig Moller, the Sky Tower stands 328 metres tall — the tallest structure in New Zealand and still the best vantage point in the city. On a clear day its three observation levels take in both Waitematā and Manukau harbours, Rangitoto, the Harbour Bridge and the scattered volcanic cones that punctuate the suburbs. At its foot, the pedestrianised Britomart and Wynyard Quarter precincts gather restaurants, weekend markets and ferry departures.

City of Sails: harbours, ferries and inner-city streets
Nicknamed the "City of Sails" for having one of the highest rates of boat ownership per capita anywhere in the world, Auckland runs on its harbour. Ferries cross to Devonport, a Victorian waterfront suburb of colourful timber villas at the foot of the North Head volcano, or out to Waiheke Island, known for its vineyards and beaches, about 40 minutes away by boat. On land, Ponsonby and Karangahape Road (K' Road) hold some of the city's most energetic shopping, galleries and restaurant scenes, while genteel Parnell mixes boutique shopping with historic villas.
