An airport about 4 km from the centre

USH

Ushuaia International Airport - Malvinas Argentinas

The airport is about 4 km south of the town centre, on the shore of the Beagle Channel, according to Wikipedia (EN) and Wikivoyage (EN). It has daily flights from Buenos Aires and connections to other Argentine cities. Taxis and remises reach the centre in a few minutes; we give neither fares nor timetables, which change.

Distance taken from Wikipedia (EN) and Wikivoyage (EN). Duration and fares not given because they vary.

Ushuaia, capital of Tierra del Fuego province, lies on the main island of Tierra del Fuego, on the Beagle Channel, between the last foothills of the Andes and the sea. By convention it is considered among the southernmost cities in the world (54° 48' south), even though the Chilean village of Puerto Williams lies further south. It has about 80,000 inhabitants (Wikipedia FR) and lives mainly from tourism, the port and industry. Its name comes from Yaghan and refers to a bay that looks east or to the end of the bay, depending on the source.

The Beagle Channel: lighthouse, sea lions and cormorants

Sailing on the channel

Catamarans and other boats leave the harbour for Beagle Channel excursions, with views of the mountains, cormorants, sea lions and sometimes other marine animals, according to Wikivoyage (EN). The weather changes fast: dress warmly.

Les Éclaireurs lighthouse

The Les Éclaireurs lighthouse stands on an islet about 9 km south-east of the town and is visited on a short boat trip (Wikivoyage EN). Locally it is called the lighthouse at the end of the world, although the one that inspired Jules Verne is another lighthouse, further east.

Les Éclaireurs lighthouse

The red-and-white striped lighthouse rises on a rocky islet where seabirds perch, with the mountains of Tierra del Fuego behind. The cloudy sky is typical of the region.

Sea lions facing the mountains

Sea lions rest on a rock facing snow-covered peaks. They can be seen on excursions on the Beagle Channel. The exact location of this photo is not confirmed. We have no photo of penguins.

Forest, lakes and walkways west of town

Tierra del Fuego National Park, at Lapataia, about 12 km west of Ushuaia (Wikivoyage EN, ES), offers marked walks through forest, peat bog, lakes and bays, with longer hikes for walkers. You get there by car, taxi or excursion; we have no photo of the End of the World Train, which serves it for about forty minutes (Wikivoyage EN).

The wooden walkway

Wooden walkways cross meadow and forest at the water's edge, with the peaks of Tierra del Fuego in the distance. They protect the peat bogs and let you walk on dry ground.

A town between mountain and sea, and a starting point for Antarctica

The centre

Ushuaia stretches east to west, between the foothills of the cordillera to the north and the Beagle Channel to the south; shops and restaurants cluster around San Martín and Maipú streets (Wikivoyage EN). A single road, Ruta 3, links it to the rest of Argentina.

Antarctica

Ushuaia is one of the main departure ports for cruises to Antarctica, as well as for flights over the continent, according to Wikivoyage (EN). Those boarding there can buy warm clothing; we give neither prices nor cruise offers.

The town at dusk

In the pink light of evening, the town stretches at the foot of a snow-covered mountain, on the shore of the channel. The sun sets late in summer.

End of the World Museum, former prison and Yaghan history

End of the World Museum

The Museo del Fin del Mundo presents the wildlife of Tierra del Fuego, notably its bird collection, as well as the history of settlement and navigation in the region (Wikivoyage EN). It is visited in two buildings close to each other.

The former prison

A penitentiary was built from 1902 and completed in 1920; closed in 1947, it now houses the Museo Marítimo and the Museo del Presidio, with exhibits on the town's history, Antarctica and marine art (Wikipedia DE, Wikivoyage EN). The prisoners also built the End of the World railway. Check opening hours before visiting.

History

The Yaghan and the Selk'nam lived in the region before the arrival of English missionaries in 1869 and of the Argentine navy in 1884 (Wikipedia DE). Every year on 21 June, the Fiesta Nacional de la Noche más Larga celebrates the winter solstice (Wikipedia ES).

Centolla, lamb and seafood

The local speciality is centolla, the Patagonian king crab or spider crab, served as a starter or gratin; lamb and fish are also everywhere, according to Wikivoyage (EN). Fruit and vegetables come from far away, which partly explains the high prices. Restaurants cluster around San Martín and Maipú streets; in the west, rotisseries sell pizzas and empanadas to take away.

Gastronomy festival

Every winter, a gastronomy festival, "Ushuaia a Fuego Lento", puts lamb, trout, centolla and other products in the spotlight (Wikipedia ES). We have no photo of these dishes.

Taxis, buses, excursions and flights from Buenos Aires

In town

The centre is walkable, but the town is hilly. Taxis and city buses serve the districts, the road to the Martial glacier and the airport. For the national park, the lakes and excursions to the east, you take a taxi, a rental car or an agency; boats leave from the harbour.

Getting there

The flight from Buenos Aires is the most practical way, according to Wikivoyage (EN). The town is linked to the rest of the country by a single, very long road, Ruta 3. Book well ahead in high season.

Stay careful

Bring warm, windproof clothing all year. Check the official recommendations of your departure country before you go, bearing in mind the changeable weather.

An expensive destination, because of remoteness and the tourist season

Ushuaia is one of the most expensive destinations in Argentina: remoteness raises accommodation and food costs, and boat excursions, the national park and the train weigh on the budget. The overall level is therefore above that of an average Argentine town, especially in high season, with Antarctica cruise departures pushing prices up. We give no figures, because prices change with the season and the exchange rate.

The air fare remains the most variable item. SniperAir monitors prices to USH and compares them with the route's history.
