Start where the river boats unload

Set your alarm for 5 or 6 a.m. That is when the fish arrive at Ver-o-Peso and the açaí is at its freshest. Billed as the largest open-air market in Latin America, Ver-o-Peso combines an iron pavilion, fish market, meat market and açaí fair. Its name comes from an old customs weighing post, the Casa de Haver-o-Peso. If you only have one morning in the city, spend it here.

Belém, gateway to the Amazon, not a beach resort

Belém, gateway to the Amazon, is the capital of Pará state and a city of more than 1.3 million people. Captain Francisco Caldeira Castelo Branco founded it in 1616 around the Forte do Presépio, and it was first called Feliz Lusitânia. The rubber boom of 1880 to 1920 made it rich. Come for its culture and its food rather than for beaches: Belém has been a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy since 2015, and it is the launch point for Marajó Island.

Jambu is the herb that makes your lips tingle, and you will find it in many local dishes. For a meal by the water, the Estação das Docas, a group of restored docks, is lined with restaurants.

A fort, a basilica and a rubber-era opera house

Forte do Presépio

The fort where the city began in 1616 is a natural first stop, along with the Sé Cathedral and the Basilica of Our Lady of Nazaré.

Theatro da Paz

This neoclassical opera house was built with rubber-boom wealth. Together with the Teatro Amazonas in Manaus, it has been inscribed by UNESCO as the Amazon Theatres.

Green spaces

The Mangal das Garças park, with its egrets, flamingos and butterfly house, and the Emílio Goeldi museum and zoo, round out a visit.

One of the world's largest religious processions

The second Sunday of October

Every year on the second Sunday of October, an immense crowd takes to the streets of Belém for the Círio de Nazaré. The tradition goes back to 1793 and to the legend of a statue found by a caboclo named Plácido. Its symbols are a 400-meter rope and the berlinda carriage, and the Friday evening Trasladação comes first. The Círio is listed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. October is peak season, and prices rise accordingly.

Combu, Mosqueiro and Marajó

Combu and Mosqueiro

A short boat trip takes you to Combu Island for grilled tambaqui. Mosqueiro Island, 67 km north, has freshwater beaches.

Marajó, the giant island

Marajó is described as the largest fluvio-marine island on Earth, known for its Marajoara ceramics, its water-buffalo ranches and more than 400 bird species. Boats from Belém reach Porto do Camará in Salvaterra in about 3 hours, or about 1 hour 30 by fast launch, and a car ferry from Icoaraci takes about 2 hours 30. From Salvaterra, the ferry to Soure is free for passengers and takes 10 minutes. The wet season runs from January to June, when the island is partly flooded, and the dry season from July to December. Schedules change, so check them locally.
