Originally named Seymour South after Lord Hugh Seymour, the island served as a US military airbase during World War II before being handed back to Ecuador. Ruins of the old military installations are still visible from the plane during takeoff or landing. With no civilian population, it's home only to Ecuadorian Navy and Air Force personnel.

Removed from the island for flight-safety reasons during the US military presence, land iguanas were reintroduced in the 1990s — 700 individuals in total, according to the Galápagos National Park. By 1997 the first iguanas born on the island itself were already recorded; the captive-breeding program officially wrapped up in 2008. A conservation success now visible to visitors passing through.
