El Alamein is an Egyptian city in Matrouh Governorate on the Mediterranean, about 106 km west of Alexandria. It is known for the two battles of 1942, which halted the Axis advance towards Egypt and turned the Desert War, according to Wikipedia (FR). Visitors come today for the cemeteries and the war museum, but also for the sea: every summer many Egyptians leave the big cities for the north coast. Flight prices to this coast vary a lot by season and air service is irregular. A SniperAir alert saves you comparing every day: you set a budget, we compare new fares with the route's real price history and let you know. SniperAir monitors and alerts; it does not sell or book tickets.

DBB

El Alamein International (DBB)

El Alamein airport (DBB) is an international airport on Egypt's north coast with a single 3,499 m runway, according to Wikipedia (EN). Sources disagree on its distance from the town (Wikipedia puts it 160 km west of Alexandria, Wikivoyage 85 km from El Alamein), so we give no precise figure. Wikivoyage (EN) noted in late 2022 that there were no scheduled flights then; current service needs checking, as it appears to be highly seasonal. Plan on a pre-arranged transfer or a taxi to your accommodation.

Distances conflict between Wikipedia (EN) and Wikivoyage (EN); no timetables or transfer fares are given.

Alexandria (HBE) and Cairo (CAI) have many more flights and can be tracked in parallel; from Alexandria, a coastal road runs west to El Alamein. Marsa Matruh, further west, is another possible stop on the same coast.

War cemeteries, ancient ruins and north-coast beaches

El Alamein comes down to three words: memory, sea and building sites. The five places below are illustrated; the war museum, Marina el-Alamein and the Leukaspis site are described in text only further down.

A military cemetery in the desert

After the war, the fallen were gathered into cemeteries near the town: the Allies on one side, Germans and Italians on Tel el-Eisa hill outside the town, according to Wikipedia (EN, DE). These are places of remembrance: dress simply, keep voices low and do not play among the graves.

The beach and the Mediterranean

The north coast offers pale sand beaches and a sea that gets rough in winter. Wikipedia (EN) says the climate is a little less hot than elsewhere in Egypt thanks to Mediterranean winds; Winston Churchill reportedly called El Alamein's climate the best in the world, per Wikivoyage (EN). Check the beach flags and swell before you swim.

The Commonwealth cemetery

The Commonwealth war cemetery and the Alamein Memorial are built and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, according to Wikipedia (EN). It holds soldiers from several countries who fought on the Allied side. The site is open to the public; check opening times before you go.

The headstones

Pale stone headstones stand in rows on the sand, each with its own inscription. The ochre colour of the ground and stones gives the site great unity, especially late in the afternoon. Respect the place: photographs are allowed but should be discreet.

A place of remembrance facing the sea

From a vantage point you see the rows of headstones, the central path and the desert beyond. Wikipedia (EN) also lists a Greek cemetery, an Italian cemetery with 5,200 graves and a German ossuary built in the style of a medieval fortress.

Beside these sites, Marina el-Alamein is a seaside resort from the 1980s built around a lagoon, according to Wikivoyage (EN). Close by, the archaeological site of Leukaspis (or Antiphrae), an ancient Greco-Roman port, keeps ruins on the shore. Finally, the New Alamein project, launched in 2018, lines the coast with towers, hotels and lagoons, says the same source.

War museum, memorials and an ancient site

The El Alamein war museum

The museum displays objects from the El Alamein fighting and the wider war in North Africa, according to Wikipedia (DE). It is a good starting point for understanding the sequence of the two 1942 battles.

The German and Italian memorials

On Tel el-Eisa hill stand a German ossuary shaped like a medieval fortress and an Italian memorial with 5,200 graves, says Wikipedia (EN). They were completed in 1959 according to Wikivoyage (EN).

The Commonwealth cemetery and memorial

The Alamein Memorial and its adjoining cemetery are maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission; Wikipedia (EN) also lists a Greek cemetery in the town.

Leukaspis, an ancient port

North-east of El Alamein, Leukaspis is an archaeological site with Greek and Roman ruins; according to Wikivoyage (EN) it is among the best preserved on the Mediterranean coast, after being nearly destroyed in 1986 during construction of the neighbouring resort.

Grilled fish, tea and sweets of the coast

At the table

In summer the north coast lives to the rhythm of Egyptian holidaymakers: beach restaurants, grills, fish and seafood, rice and vegetables. We list no addresses because venues change quickly and many are seasonal.

Drinks

Tea is the everyday drink; fresh fruit juices and Turkish coffee go with meals. Alcohol is served in some hotels but rarely elsewhere: check before you travel.

Markets and light meals

Resorts on the north coast also have cafes, oriental pastries and sandwiches. Prefer sealed bottled water and wash raw fruit before eating.

Getting around the north coast

Between sights

The cemeteries, museum and beaches are far apart, so a car or taxi is the most practical way. Agree the fare before you get in or go through your accommodation.

From Alexandria

A coastal road links Alexandria to El Alamein and onwards to Marsa Matruh; buses and shared taxis serve it. We do not detail timetables, which vary.

Safety in the field

Wikipedia (DE) reminds readers that wartime mines remain in the desert. Always stay on roads and marked tracks and never wander outside signed areas.

A season-dependent budget, to check before you go

Price level

We give no price ranges: we could not cross-check them with two independent, current sources. The currency is the Egyptian pound, and accommodation prices on the coast rise in summer.

Flights

The flight is still the most variable cost. SniperAir tracks prices to DBB and compares them with the route's history; it does not sell or book tickets. Alexandria and Cairo can complete your watch.

Entry rules and precautions

Entry requirements depend on your nationality: check official sites and your government's travel advice. Protect yourself from the sun, drink bottled water and respect the solemn character of the cemeteries.

A desert climate tempered by the sea

Winter (December to February)

Cool; Wikipedia (FR) speaks of cold winters. Beaches are quiet.

Spring (March to May)

Temperatures rise and the light is lovely for visiting the cemeteries. The sea is still cool.

Summer (June to September)

Hot, with sea breezes that cool things down: it is the high season for Egyptians on the north coast, says Wikipedia (EN).

Autumn (October and November)

Heat becomes easier to bear; the 1942 battles took place in July and then from October to November, which gives commemorative visits added meaning.

El Alamein has a hot desert climate (BWh) softened somewhat by Mediterranean winds, according to Wikipedia (EN). Wikipedia (FR) describes a pleasant climate all year, with cold winters and hot summers. We give no temperature figures because we found none that agree across the sources.

What to do in El Alamein by length of stay

1 day

Memory

The war museum, the Commonwealth cemetery and the German and Italian memorials, with a stop on the beach.

Memory and sea

Add Leukaspis, Marina el-Alamein and half a day on a north-coast beach.

4 days or more

The coast and Alexandria

Combine with Alexandria, 106 km to the east, or continue to Marsa Matruh depending on the season.
