An airport close to the centre, linked by monorail

OKA

Naha (OKA)

Naha Airport is Okinawa's main hub and also the connecting point for the other islands of the archipelago, according to Wikipedia (FR). Wikivoyage (DE) puts it about 4 km from the centre, while other sources give no distance; Wikipedia (JA) notes the airport takes up more than 8 per cent of the city's area and limits building heights. The Yui Rail monorail, opened in 2003 per Wikipedia (JA), links the airport with central Naha, Kokusai-dori and Shuri (Wikipedia EN). Wikivoyage (EN) adds that car rental offices are off-site and a shuttle can take half an hour.

Distances and times are approximate and vary by source. We do not quote fares.

Naha is the capital of Okinawa Prefecture, on the main island of the Ryukyu archipelago. Population figures run from about 309,000 to 315,000 depending on page and year, so we do not give a single one. Naha was the commercial and port centre of the Ryukyu Kingdom, whose royal capital was Shuri, according to Wikipedia (EN); Shuri was absorbed into Naha in 1954 per Wikipedia (FR).

Shuri Castle, shrines, shisa and turquoise coasts

The Ryukyu kings ruled from Shuri from 1429 to 1879, says Wikivoyage (DE); the archipelago then became Okinawa Prefecture in 1879. The Battle of Okinawa in 1945 badly damaged the city and its centre had to be rebuilt, according to Wikipedia (EN, FR, ES). The places below are illustrated.

The tiled roofs of Shuri Castle

Shuri is the hill of the former royal palace. The castle has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, together with other sites of the Ryukyu Kingdom, according to Wikipedia (EN, FR); Wikipedia (JA) says the listed part is the remains, not the rebuilt structures. Stone walls, red walls and orange tile roofs make the architecture easy to recognise from afar.

The Shureimon gate

The Shureimon is the entrance gate to the site, rebuilt after the war according to Wikipedia (EN). Its bright colours, multi-tiered roofs and red pillars set the tone for Ryukyuan architecture.

The red buildings of Shuri

The castle was almost destroyed in 1945, rebuilt from 1992, and struck by the fire of the night of 30 to 31 October 2019, according to Wikipedia (EN, FR, JA). The site is partly open, with the reconstruction visible to visitors, per Wikipedia (EN, JA); Wikipedia (EN) says work on the main building is expected to finish in autumn 2026, with no firm reopening date. Check current access before you go.

Naminoue Shrine

Naminoue Shrine, on a clifftop above the sea, was the kingdom's main shrine, according to Wikivoyage (EN). A dark torii and stone lanterns: a short visit that combines easily with a walk through town.

The shisa, guardian of Okinawa

Shisa, lion-dog statues of stone or ceramic, guard houses and shrines in Okinawa. The Tsuboya district, a pottery centre according to Wikipedia (EN, JA), is where this craft tradition is easiest to see.

Cliffs and sea on Okinawa

Okinawa island has cliff coasts and clear water, seen here with kayaks below a cliff at Cape Manzamo, outside Naha. These landscapes call for a rental car or a tour. From Tomari port, ferries also serve the Kerama Islands (Tokashiki, Aka, Zamami), named by Wikipedia (EN, FR) and Wikivoyage (EN, DE).

Kokusai-dori and the markets

Kokusai-dori, a straight street of about 1.5 to 1.6 km according to Wikipedia (FR, EN) and Wikivoyage (DE), packs shops, restaurants and nightlife. It was rebuilt after the war. The Heiwa-dori arcade leads to Makishi Public Market, with seafood, meat and fresh produce (Wikipedia EN); Wikivoyage (EN) says restaurants upstairs will cook what you buy below.

Ryukyuan history, pottery and the memory of war

History and pottery

Wikivoyage (EN, DE) lists the Naha City Museum of History and the Tsuboya Pottery Museum. The Tamaudun royal tombs, dating from 1501 per Wikivoyage (DE), lie near the castle.

Memory of the war

The former underground headquarters of the Imperial Navy in Tomigusuku is named by Wikipedia (FR) and Wikivoyage (DE); the 1945 Battle of Okinawa left deep marks on the city. Wikivoyage (DE) also notes that wartime munitions are still occasionally found.

Before you go

We quote no fees or hours: they change and sources disagree.

Goya champuru, Agu pork and Okinawan specialities

Dishes to try

Wikivoyage (EN) names goya champuru, a stir-fry of bitter melon, and shabu-shabu of Agu pork, a local breed. The open sources give little more detail on the menu, so ask locally and try the prefecture's dishes.

Makishi Market

Makishi Public Market, at the end of the Heiwa-dori arcade, has over 400 shops according to Wikivoyage (EN); you buy fish or meat and have it cooked upstairs. Wikivoyage (DE) also mentions a Food Village with about twenty stalls.

Drinks

Habushu, a liquor with a snake in the bottle, is sold in bars and souvenir shops according to Wikivoyage (EN): for curiosity only.

Monorail, buses and ferries to the islands

In the city

The Yui Rail monorail is the island's only train according to Wikipedia (EN), and Naha is the only prefectural capital in Japan without JR lines, says Wikipedia (JA). City buses and bike share complete the offer per Wikivoyage (EN); Wikivoyage (DE) names the Okica card and one- to three-day passes.

Renting a car

To explore beyond Naha a rental car is often the most practical; Wikivoyage (EN) says the agencies are outside the airport.

Ferries

From Tomari port, ferries serve the Kerama Islands and a daily ferry goes to Kagoshima, according to Wikipedia (EN). Wikivoyage (EN) says autumn typhoons often cancel ferries, so leave some margin.
