Cheap flights to Calvi, the most visited town in Corsica

A citadel that runs straight into the sea

Looking for cheap flights to Calvi? You are heading for the northwest coast of Corsica, in the Balagne region, to a seaside town of fewer than 6,000 residents that has lived mainly from tourism since 1950. Its signature is the Genoese citadel, a fortress on a rocky promontory that seems to rise straight out of the water, facing a wide curve of sand. Calvi also has a second, more unusual identity: the French Foreign Legion's 2nd Parachute Regiment has been stationed here since 1967.

Calvi-Sainte-Catherine Airport, about 7 km from town

CLY

Calvi-Sainte-Catherine

An international airport about 7 km from the town, with mostly seasonal flights from mainland French cities such as Paris Orly, Lyon, Marseille, Nice and Toulouse, and from Brussels Charleroi and London Stansted. Routes vary from year to year, so check the current schedule.

By sea and by rail

Ferries dock at Calvi's Xavier Colonna port, and L'Île-Rousse, about 30 minutes away by road, has further crossings from Nice and Marseille. A narrow-gauge railway links Calvi with L'Île-Rousse and Ponte-Leccia, and in summer a daily bus reaches Bastia, about 90 km away, in roughly two hours.

Five centuries of Genoese stone

The town dates back to the 13th century, when Genoa built a closed upper town on the rock. The citadel you see today is Genoese work from the late 15th century onwards, built to withstand artillery. It survived a French and Turkish attack in 1553 but was sacked two years later by Dragut Reis and the Barbary pirates. In 1794 British forces under Nelson captured Calvi, and it was during this campaign that the admiral lost the sight of his right eye.

Walking the ramparts

Inside the walls is a free-to-explore maze of lanes, stairways and ramparts with views over the whole bay. Look out for the Baroque church of Santa Maria Maggiore, then come back down to Rue Georges Clemenceau in the lower town.

The Columbus legend

A house inside the citadel is presented as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. It is a local legend from the Genoese era rather than an established fact, and several other Mediterranean towns make the same claim.

The bay of Calvi seen from the heights

Calvi's beach curves east for several kilometres towards the rocky Punta Spano. The sea floor shelves gently, which makes it a favourite with families, and water sports are on offer along the way. For more space, head to Alga beach near the Revellata peninsula, or to Arinella and Algajola on the Lumio side.

Lighthouse trail, marine reserve and hill villages

The Revellata peninsula

The coastal customs path, the Sentier des Douaniers, leads from town to the Revellata point, about 5 km away, with its lighthouse and sculpted rocks.

Scandola by boat

Boat trips leave for the Scandola nature reserve. Diving and canyoning round out the outdoor options.

The Balagne hill villages

Pigna and Sant'Antonino perch on the hills inland, and the U Trinichellu tourist train is another way to discover the area. L'Île-Rousse is about 30 minutes by car, and the wild Agriates and Bastia make good day trips.

A summer of music on the beach

The Calvi on the Rocks festival takes over the beach in July, followed by the Calvi Jazz Festival in mid-July. In mid-September the town hosts encounters devoted to Corsican polyphonic singing. On the plate, expect Corsican charcuterie, brocciu cheese and local AOC wines.

Spring

Summer

Winter

Mild but wet, with a January mean of around 9 to 10 degrees C.

Getting around and planning your stay

A rental car is the easiest way to explore the Balagne, but the roads are steep and narrow, so take full insurance. In high season, book flights and accommodation well ahead. Two to four days is enough to enjoy the beach, the citadel and a couple of excursions; Calvi suits beach lovers, hikers, families and history fans alike.
