A Münster city break starts under the gables

Flattened in 1945, rebuilt as it was

Plan a Münster city break and you will end up, sooner rather than later, on the Prinzipalmarkt. The main market street is lined with gabled Renaissance houses, the Gothic town hall and St Lambert's Church. What you see is a faithful reconstruction: the medieval center was flattened in early 1945 and rebuilt identically. Today Münster is a university city, and in 2004 it won the LivCom Award as the most livable city of its size.

Münster Osnabrück International

The airport is in Greven, about 25 km from Münster, and serves both Münster and Osnabrück. Airlines include Ryanair, Lufthansa and Eurowings. Buses S50 and R51 run from Münster station in 30 to 40 minutes, and the X150 links the airport with Osnabrück main station in about 45 minutes.

The German city where bikes overtook cars

Münster calls itself the bicycle capital of Germany, and the numbers back it up: in 2007 bicycle traffic overtook car traffic, the city counts more than 500,000 bikes, and up to 100,000 cyclists ride through it on a busy day. A car-free promenade rings the old town, perfect for a first loop. The compact center can also be crossed on foot in about 20 minutes, so you can drop the bike whenever you like.

Where the Thirty Years' War came to an end

The Peace Hall

Inside the historic town hall, the Peace Hall is where the treaty between Spain and the Dutch Republic, ending the Eighty Years' War, was ratified in 1648. It is the heart of Münster's identity as a City of Peace.

The Anabaptist cages

Look up at St Lambert's Church and its three iron cages. In 1536 they held the bodies of the leaders of the Anabaptist theocracy that had seized the city, among them Jan van Leiden, the self-proclaimed king.

Westphalia's largest church and its astronomical clock

Part Romanesque, part Gothic, St Paul's Cathedral is the largest church in Westphalia. Inside, do not miss the late-medieval astronomical clock, whose calendar runs all the way to 2071. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, the Domplatz outside fills with a market of more than 150 stalls.

Museums, public sculpture and the Aasee

Museums

The LWL Museum of Art and Culture covers 1,000 years of art, and the Pablo Picasso Art Museum is another reason to linger. Check their websites for current opening hours and prices.

Skulptur Projekte

Every ten years since 1977, Skulptur Projekte Münster fills the city's streets with contemporary public art.

The Aasee

This artificial lake lies about 15 minutes on foot from the Prinzipalmarkt, with boat hire, a sailing school and paths for walking and cycling. The Botanical Garden is free to visit.

Töttchen, pumpernickel and organic Altbier

Try Töttchen, veal in an onion and mustard sauce, along with Westphalian air-dried ham and pumpernickel. To drink, Pinkus Müller has been brewing since 1816. It is the only survivor of the many Altbier breweries the city once had and is described as the oldest organic brewery in the world.

Osnabrück and the castles of the Münsterland

Osnabrück, the other city of peace

Osnabrück is 46 km away by train, with the fastest services taking 24 minutes. Its town hall also has a Peace Hall, free to visit. Add St Peter's Cathedral, dating from the 11th century, the Felix Nussbaum Haus designed by Daniel Libeskind, devoted to the Jewish painter born in Osnabrück in 1904 and murdered in Auschwitz in 1944, and the Kalkriese Museum and Park on the site of the Varus battle.

The 100 Castles Route

The Münsterland is crossed by the 100 Castles Route. Burg Vischering in Lüdinghausen and Nordkirchen Palace, nicknamed the Westphalian Versailles, make easy outings.
