An airport to the north, linked to the centre by underground

NUE

Nuremberg Albrecht Dürer (NUE)

Nuremberg Airport lies about 5 km north of the city, according to Wikivoyage (FR, ES). Underground line U2 links it to the main station in a quarter of an hour at most: about 13 minutes according to Wikivoyage (EN, ES), under a quarter of an hour according to Wikivoyage (FR). Make sure you board a train heading to the airport, as some end earlier. Wikivoyage (DE) notes that direct links from German-speaking countries have shrunk, with just one in 2025, so check the flights. Munich, about an hour away by fast train, and Frankfurt, about 2 h 25 by train from the airport according to Wikivoyage (EN), are other gateways worth watching.

Distances and times are approximate, based on Wikivoyage (EN, FR, ES, DE); timetables change, so check them before travelling. We do not give fares.

Nuremberg is the largest city in Franconia and the second in Bavaria, on the Pegnitz; it has between 530,000 and 550,000 inhabitants depending on the Wikipedia edition (EN, DE, FR, ES) and the year used. The old town is ringed by imposing walls, more than 4 km of which survive, according to Wikipedia (ES), and the station sits right in front of them, says Wikivoyage (EN). The imperial castle dominates the whole.

The imperial castle, the old town, the Pegnitz and the churches

First mentioned in 1050, Nuremberg was a Free Imperial City where the imperial regalia were kept from 1424 to 1796, according to Wikipedia (DE, ES). The war destroyed much of the city, which was rebuilt; the old town still keeps a medieval atmosphere, says Wikivoyage (EN). The places below are illustrated; Dürer's house and the documentation centre are covered at the end of the section.

The imperial castle

The Kaiserburg towers over the old town from its hill: the large complex includes the Imperial Castle proper (the Palas and the double chapel), the Burgrave's Castle and the city's buildings, among them the Luginsland tower, according to Wikivoyage (EN). The Sinwell Tower gives a fine view of the city, says Wikivoyage (FR).

Rooftops and towers of the old town

Seen from the castle heights, the old town spreads out in a sea of red tiled roofs.

The Pegnitz and its half-timbered houses

The Pegnitz flows through the old town; its banks line up half-timbered houses and stone towers, best discovered by following the river on foot. Wikivoyage (FR) also lists the Hangman's House among the lesser-visited curiosities.

Churches and rooftops at dusk

The churches of St Sebald, Romanesque in origin, and St Lawrence, mostly 15th century, punctuate the rooftops, according to Wikivoyage (EN). At dusk their spires stand out against the sky.

The banks of the Pegnitz

Medieval buildings of red brick and stone, often in reddish sandstone, line the river. The Weinstadel and the Heilig-Geist-Spital are among the monuments named by Wikipedia (DE).

Dürer, fountains and squares

Albrecht Dürer's house, where the painter lived from 1509 to 1528, can be visited, according to Wikivoyage (EN). The Hauptmarkt, with the Schöner Brunnen, is the main market square; the Fountain of Virtues stands by St Lawrence church, according to Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (DE).

Twentieth-century memory

The documentation centre at the Reichsparteitagsgelände traces the rise of Nazism, says Wikivoyage (FR, DE). The party rallies took place in Nuremberg from 1933 to 1938, according to Wikivoyage (DE). It is a serious place that deserves time.

The Germanisches Nationalmuseum, toys and the city's history

Art, history and objects

The very large Germanisches Nationalmuseum shows collections of everyday German objects from every era, says Wikivoyage (FR). The Fembohaus, the city museum, traces Nuremberg's history, and the Tucherschloss is a Renaissance residence, according to Wikivoyage (FR, EN).

Toys and science

Nuremberg was one of the great centres of the toy industry: the Toy Museum shows wooden and metal toys, according to Wikivoyage (EN, FR). The Deutsches Museum Nürnberg, very recent, offers interactive installations. We do not give admission prices.

Combined tickets

A municipal museum ticket gives access to the others on the same day, says Wikivoyage (FR); a Nürnberg + Fürth Card covers 48 hours and more than 50 sights, according to Wikivoyage (EN). Check the conditions before buying.

Nuremberg sausages, Lebkuchen and Franconian beer

The sausages

Nürnberger Rostbratwürste are small grilled pork sausages, spicier than others in Franconia; a restaurant portion is six, and "Drei im Weggla" means three sausages in a bread roll, according to Wikivoyage (EN). The name is protected.

Gingerbread and sweets

Nuremberg is famous for Lebkuchen (gingerbread); boxes marked "Bruch" hold broken pieces that cost less, says Wikivoyage (EN). Schneeballen ("snowballs"), Eierzucker and Kirschenmännla are among the local sweets.

Beer and other dishes

Saure Zipfel (sausages in a vinegar and onion broth), Presssack and Stadtwurst "mit Musik" are local dishes, according to Wikivoyage (EN, DE). A tiny brewery in the old town, Altstadthof, makes a reddish Rotbier, says Wikivoyage (DE).

Underground, trams, buses and the VGN network

A dense network

Nuremberg has three underground lines, several tram lines and a dense bus network, according to Wikivoyage (FR). VGN tickets, valid as far as Bayreuth and Bamberg, are not valid on IC and ICE trains, says Wikivoyage (EN). Day tickets exist; check the conditions.

On foot in the old town

The old town is best visited on foot, according to Wikivoyage (FR). Note that, according to the same source, pedestrian crossings are rare in the centre and ticket machines do not always accept bank cards.

Trains and the station

The main station sits just outside the walls on the south-east side of the old town, with an underground passage that avoids the busy junction, says Wikivoyage (EN). Nuremberg was the site of Germany's first railway, according to the same source.

Mid-range prices, dearer at Christmas time

Price level

Nuremberg is mid-range by the standards of large German cities, but accommodation fills up during the Christmas market and trade fairs, according to Wikivoyage (EN, FR). We do not give amounts because we could not confirm them on two independent sources.

Flying and precautions

SniperAir monitors prices to NUE and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. Also keep an eye on Munich and Frankfurt. Germany is in the Schengen area: check entry requirements for your nationality and your government's official advice.

Precautions and languages

Keep an eye on your belongings in the crowds of the Christmas market and near the station. Wikivoyage (FR) notes that few shopkeepers speak languages other than German; a few German words help.

Hot summers, cold winters and a Christmas market

Winter (December to February)

Cold; the Christmas market, from late November to 24 December, draws more than 2.5 million visitors, according to Wikipedia (DE, ES).

Spring (March to May)

Changeable, with days getting milder; a good season for exploring the old town on foot.

Summer (June to August)

Hot: some days exceed 35 C, with a record of 38.6 C on 27 July 1983, according to Wikipedia (DE).

Autumn (September to November)

Pleasant at first, then cooler; the city prepares for the late-November Christmas market.

The mean annual temperature is about 10.7 C, according to Wikipedia (DE). We do not give monthly averages because they vary between sources and periods. Check the Christmas market dates for the year.
