Island of Hippocrates
Cheap flights to Kos, for beaches with a history
Hippocrates, the father of medicine, was born on Kos around 460 BC, and the island still feels like a pilgrimage for history lovers. Cheap flights to Kos open the door to a rare mix: a healing sanctuary on a hillside, Roman ruins scattered through the main town, long sandy beaches and a flat island that is a pleasure to explore by bike. It is the second most populous island of the Dodecanese after Rhodes, with about 37,000 residents (2021 census).
Kos measures about 42 km by 11.5 km, with 112 km of coastline. It sits south of Kalymnos and Pserimos, north of Nisyros, and just across the water from the Bodrum peninsula in Turkey. Even the cos, or romaine, lettuce is named after it.
The Asclepeion
The Asclepeion, a sanctuary of ancient medicine
Roman baths
Part of the sanctuary laid out on three terraces about 4 km south-west of Kos Town.
Temple of Apollo
Seven of its columns are still standing.
Great Temple of Asclepius
The temple of the god of healing, the sanctuary's namesake.
The sanctuary probably became a full healing centre only after the death of Hippocrates, and it reportedly drew pilgrims from Rome to Constantinople. Between the site and the town, the International Hippocratic Foundation runs a museum and garden.

Kos Town
A town of ruins, mosques and harbours
From Mandraki Harbour to the Plane Tree of Hippocrates
Kos Town is best explored on foot. The Plane Tree of Hippocrates, said to be between 500 and 2,000 years old, has a trunk more than 4 m wide, and its branches are now held up by scaffolding. Nearby rises Nerantzia Castle, built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 14th and 15th centuries, and Mandraki Harbour lies close by.

| Landmark | Good to know |
|---|---|
| Platia Eleftherias | The main square, with the 18th-century Defterdar Mosque and the Market Hall |
| Ancient Agora | A courtyard of about 50 m by 300 m, free to wander |
| Roman Odeon | 2nd century, with 14 marble tiers, free |
| Casa Romana | A Roman house open to visitors |
Museums and monuments
Archaeology, medicine and knights
Kos has few museums, but they are well placed in town. Hours and access change, so check before you go.
Archaeological Museum
Built in Italian style in 1936 and renovated in 2016, it shows statues, among them one of Hippocrates, and a famous mosaic from the Roman house (Wikivoyage).
Hippocratic Museum
Near the International Hippocratic Foundation, between the Asclepeion and the town, it is devoted to Hippocrates (Wikipedia).
Nerantzia Castle
The Hospitaller fortress guards the harbour entrance; one Wikivoyage page says it has been closed to visits since the July 2019 earthquake, another lists free daytime access, so ask locally.
Ancient ruins
The agora, the odeon, the Casa Romana and the Plane Tree of Hippocrates are all visited on foot in the centre.
Beaches
Sand, hot springs and wind
From Tigaki to Kefalos
Tigaki is a long stretch of white sand, and Marmari, Mastihari and Kardamena are other popular choices. Lambi and Psalidi lie near town. Paradise Beach is on the Kefalos peninsula, and Agios Stefanos combines a beach with the ruins of a basilica facing a small islet.
Bathing in hot water
At Therma Beach, about 12 km from Kos Town, thermal springs of 42 to 50 degrees C flow straight into the sea.
Windsurfing and kitesurfing
Mastihari, Tigaki, Psalidi and Kefalos are the spots for wind sports.

On two wheels
A flat island made for cycling
Around 13 km of bike paths circle Kos Town, and bikes are cheap to rent on this flat island. The longest road on the island is about 40 km, and the Embros thermal baths lie about 13 km from town, under an hour by bike (Wikivoyage DE). KTEL buses leave from Akti Miaouli Square, and taxis and rental cars cover the rest of the island.
Excursions
A volcano, a Turkish town and a snorkelling cruise
The Nisyros volcano is about an hour away by boat from Kardamena or Kefalos. Ferries to Bodrum take 25 to 45 minutes depending on the service, making a day trip to Turkey easy (bring your passport), and snorkelling cruises head to the islet of Pserimos.
Food and drink
Octopus, krasotyri and island produce
Kos cooking is island-Greek: octopus stewed in a stifado style, moussaka, souvlaki and gyros pitas, fruit preserved in syrup, and local produce such as almonds, figs, olives, tomatoes and grapes. Look too for krasotyri, a cheese matured in red wine, and pitaridia, a local pasta.
Markets and tavernas
The Market Hall in Kos Town, by the minaret, is the place for fresh produce. The tavernas of Platani and Tigaki are known for easy prices (Wikivoyage). Raise a glass of ouzo or an island wine with a plate of mezze.
Getting there
Kos airport and the ferries
Kos International Airport Hippocrates
Year-round flights from Athens and Rhodes, plus seasonal services from across Europe. The flight from Athens takes about an hour. The airport is near Antimachia, about 24 km from Kos Town.
By sea, the express ferry from Piraeus takes more than ten hours depending on the route and stops. Ferries also run from Rhodes, Patmos, Leros and Kalymnos, and the ferry to Kalymnos leaves Mastihari about every two hours.
Getting around
Buses, taxis and two wheels
From the airport to Kos Town, a public bus runs via Mastihari; a taxi is faster and costs more, even for a short ride. Island buses serve every resort but not often, and less on Sundays, and Kefalos lies about 40 km from Kos Town, a little over an hour by road (Wikivoyage).
Many visitors rent a scooter, bike or car: check your licence and insurance. The centre of Kos Town is compact and walkable.
