Skopje is the capital and largest city of North Macedonia. It spreads along the Vardar river: according to Wikipedia (EN), the Roman town of Scupi was founded here in the late 1st century, after which the city passed under Byzantine, Serbian and Ottoman rule, the latter lasting more than five centuries. A powerful earthquake on 26 July 1963 destroyed much of the city, which was rebuilt with international assistance. Today Skopje combines a fortress on its hill, a sprawling Ottoman Old Bazaar, varied museums and post-earthquake architecture, with Mount Vodno and Matka Canyon close by. Flight prices to Skopje change often: a SniperAir alert saves you from comparing every day. You set your budget, we compare new prices with the real history of the route and we let you know.

Kale Fortress, the Old Bazaar and Mustafa Pasha Mosque

Central Skopje is best explored on foot, from the fortress hill to the Old Bazaar, via the Vardar. The five images below show the places that come up most often on a first visit.

Kale Fortress

The fortress rises on a hill above the centre. According to Wikipedia (DE), the first traces of settlement date to the 4th millennium BC and the present walls and towers go back to around 1700. Largely destroyed by the 1963 earthquake, it has been restored to a medieval look according to Wikipedia (EN).

The centre and the Vardar from above

From the ramparts the eye takes in the modern centre, the river and its bridges, then Mount Vodno. It is a good starting point for understanding the city: the Vardar separates the centre from the old quarter.

The roofs of the Old Bazaar

At the foot of the fortress, the Old Bazaar (Stara Čaršija) is one of the largest Ottoman urban complexes in Europe according to Wikipedia (EN). Mosques, caravanserais, baths and lanes of shops intertwine. Wikipedia (ES) calls it probably the most picturesque and richest heritage of the city.

An alley under umbrellas

In the Old Bazaar, colourful umbrellas hung above an alley make a much-photographed setting. Wikipedia (EN) notes that the government has revived the bazaar's evening life, with restaurants serving Macedonian and Ottoman dishes.

Mustafa Pasha Mosque

Mustafa Pasha Mosque, listed by Wikivoyage (ES) among the monuments of the Old Bazaar, can be visited with its white domes and blue painted patterns inside. Dress modestly and be discreet, as in any place of worship.

Other places are worth a detour: the Stone Bridge, one of the symbols of the city according to Wikivoyage (ES); the Roman aqueduct, the last trace of the Roman presence according to Wikipedia (ES); Mount Vodno, topped by the Millennium Cross and reachable by cable car according to Wikivoyage (ES); and, a little further out, Matka Canyon on the Treska river, with its medieval churches and monasteries according to Wikivoyage (ES).

Museums: history, contemporary art and Mother Teresa

The Museum of North Macedonia and the National Gallery

The first is the largest museum in the country according to Wikipedia (EN), with particularly rich collections of icons and carved stone. The National Gallery shows paintings from the 14th to the 20th century in former hammams of the Old Bazaar according to Wikipedia (EN).

The Museum of Contemporary Art

Built after the 1963 earthquake thanks to international aid, it holds Macedonian and foreign works, including names such as Picasso, Léger and Calder according to Wikipedia (EN) and (ES).

The City Museum and the Memorial House of Mother Teresa

The City Museum is housed in the remains of the old railway station destroyed in 1963 according to Wikipedia (EN). The Memorial House of Mother Teresa, opened in 2009 according to Wikipedia (DE) and (EN), honours the nun who was born in Skopje. Getting around Skopje

On foot

The centre is easy to cover on foot: the Stone Bridge links the modern centre with the Old Bazaar, and the fortress overlooks everything. Bring good shoes for the climb to Kale.

Buses and taxis

Red buses cover the city; a ride costs 35 denars with the card or app and 50 denars in cash according to Wikivoyage (EN) and (ES). For taxis, Wikivoyage (EN) advises agreeing the price before you get in and refusing any unplanned detour; Wikivoyage (ES) mentions a taxi-ordering app.

Trains, buses and trips in the region

The train and bus stations are in the same complex according to Wikivoyage (EN) and (DE). Buses link Skopje with Pristina and Tirana; Wikivoyage (ES) says there are no international trains in 2025. Check schedules and fares before you go.

Budget and precautions

Price level
