Airport and getting into town
An airport on an Atlantic island, about thirty minutes from the city
Funchal - Cristiano Ronaldo (FNC)
Madeira's airport, named after Cristiano Ronaldo and formerly Santa Catarina, lies in Santa Cruz municipality: 18 km from Funchal according to Wikipedia (EN), or about 30 minutes by road per Wikivoyage (EN). Its runway, once famous for being short and ending at a cliff, has been extended; even so, wind can make take-offs and landings tricky, per Wikipedia (FR). The Aerobus links the airport with the Praia Formosa district according to Wikivoyage (DE). There is no land link to the island: you arrive by air, or by sea on cruise ships and ferries. Flights from Lisbon take about 1.5 hours and from London about 3.5 hours, per Wikivoyage (EN).
Distances and times are approximate, from Wikipedia (EN, FR) and Wikivoyage (EN, DE); timetables change by season: check them before you travel. We do not quote fares.
Funchal is the capital and largest city of Madeira, on the island's south coast facing the Atlantic, with about 106,000 residents in 2021 according to Wikipedia (EN, ES, DE); the urban core has about 150,000, per Wikipedia (EN, DE). The name comes from funcho, the wild fennel the first settlers found in abundance, according to Wikipedia (FR, EN, DE, ES). The city is laid out like an amphitheatre around a bay: Wikivoyage (DE) advises allowing several days, though the slopes make walking tiring.
Landmarks and nature

Funchal became a city in 1508 under King Manuel I per Wikipedia (FR); its port was an important shipping centre from the 15th to the 17th century and remains a stop for ships crossing the Atlantic, per Wikipedia (EN). The places below are illustrated; the section ends with the gardens and the cathedral.
The Funchal Cable Car
The cable car climbs from the old town to Monte, where you can see the city from above, per Wikivoyage (EN). A second cable car runs down from Monte to the botanical garden. Count on the panoramic view, but also on queues in high season.

The bay seen from above
Funchal rises from the sea to about 800 m on its northern slopes, per Wikipedia (EN). The upper districts often have cloud or drizzle while the sky is clear by the sea, and the photo shows the cable-car pylons and the pier on the horizon.

Monte and its churches
Monte, at the top of the cable car, began as a summer retreat for wealthy families because of its mild climate, per Wikipedia (EN). It has gardens, a church and the start of the wicker toboggans, the carros de cesto, which slide back down to town over about two kilometres, per Wikivoyage (EN, DE).

The marina
The leisure marina in front of Avenida do Mar is the starting point for boat trips and tourist buses, according to Wikivoyage (DE). Masts in the foreground, hills covered in houses behind: it is the classic seafront view of the city.

The port and cruise ships
Funchal's port has been dedicated to passengers since 2007, with cruise ships and ferries; fishing and cargo moved to Canico in 2017, per Wikipedia (EN). The cruise terminal is within walking distance of the centre, according to Wikivoyage (DE).

Market and fruit
At the market you find small Madeiran bananas, mangoes and passion fruit, per Wikivoyage (EN); some vendors may offer over-ripe fruit, so taste before you buy.
Getting around
Buses, cable car, taxis and levadas: expect slopes
On foot and by bus
The centre is small enough to explore on foot, but it is very hilly, per Wikivoyage (DE). Orange city buses serve the town and climb to Monte (lines 20 and 21 according to Wikivoyage EN); some lines go to the botanical garden and the Levada dos Tornos, per Wikivoyage (DE). The Giro card can be topped up.
Cable car, levadas and walks
From the top of the cable car you can walk along the Levada dos Tornos to Camacha, or follow the Levada do Bom Sucesso back towards the city, per Wikivoyage (DE). The Lido to Camara de Lobos promenade, about 6 km, takes roughly 90 minutes each way, per the same source.
Taxis, scooters and cars
Taxis wait at the cruise terminal; island tours are offered there at fixed prices, but drivers sometimes press you to buy one, warns Wikivoyage (DE). Scooters and motorbikes are common on the island according to Wikivoyage (EN). A rental car makes excursions easier.
Budget and precautions
An island, so check the cost of living
Price level
Funchal has plenty of good eating places, "if not necessarily cheap", according to Wikivoyage (EN), and room prices can drop noticeably in winter, except around Christmas, a high season. We do not give figures, since we could not cross-check them across two independent open sources.
Currency and payment
The currency is the euro. Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal and follows the same payment rules.
Flying and precautions
SniperAir monitors prices to FNC and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. You can also watch Lisbon (LIS) and Porto (OPO) to compare, because the island is reachable only by air or sea. Portugal is in the Schengen area: check the entry requirements for your nationality. Wind can disrupt flights, as Wikipedia (FR) notes: leave slack in your connections. On levada walks, stay careful and check conditions before setting out.
