Girona-Costa Brava (GRO)
Girona-Costa Brava airport is at Vilobí d'Onyar, 10 to 12 km south-west of the centre depending on the source (Wikivoyage FR, Wikipedia EN, ES). Ryanair is the main operator, says Wikivoyage (EN), and some routes run only in high season. Bus 607 meets flights and takes about half an hour to the bus station, according to Wikivoyage (EN); bus 602 also links Barcelona airport. By train, the AVE high-speed service takes about 40 minutes non-stop from Barcelona Sants and the regional R11 line about 90 minutes, says Wikivoyage (EN).

Girona is the capital of the province of the same name in Catalonia, at the confluence of the Onyar, Ter, Galligants and Güell rivers, about 100 km from Barcelona (Wikipedia FR). It has around 105,000 inhabitants: 104,320 in 2023 according to Wikivoyage (EN) and 106,476 in 2024 according to Wikipedia (EN). The centre is walkable, but the old town is on a slope, with uneven cobbles and steep steps, say Wikivoyage (EN, ES). It is also the gateway to the Costa Brava.
Landmarks
Onyar houses, cathedral, the Call and the city walls
Girona is best seen along the Onyar and up the hill of the Barri Vell, the old town. The places below are illustrated; the baths, walls, Devesa Park and day trips are covered at the end of the section.
The houses on the Onyar
The colourful houses above the river are the image of Girona, but their present look is fairly recent: they were built from the 17th to the 20th century, mostly in the 19th, and their façades were repainted in a coordinated palette, say Wikipedia (EN, FR). The white and blue Casa Masó is the birthplace of the architect Rafael Masó; a metal footbridge, the Pont de les Peixateries Velles, was designed by Gustave Eiffel, according to Wikivoyage (EN).

The Onyar and its reflections
Along the river, the façades are mirrored in the water and the light changes with the season. In summer the river can fall very low, warns Wikivoyage (EN). The bridges are the best viewpoints.

The Cathedral of Saint Mary
Built from the 11th to the 18th century, the cathedral combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque. Its 23 m Gothic nave is one of the widest in the world, say Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (FR). The Baroque façade rises at the top of a great staircase of about 90 steps, according to Wikipedia (EN, DE). The treasury holds the Tapestry of Creation, from around the year 1100.

Sant Pere de Galligants
This Romanesque Benedictine abbey, begun in 992, is one of the finest survivors of the city's Romanesque past, with its octagonal bell tower and 12th-century cloister, says Wikipedia (FR). It houses the archaeology museum.

The lanes and stairways of the Barri Vell
In the old town, cobbled streets climb by stairways under arches between old façades. The Call, the former Jewish quarter, is one of the best-preserved medieval quarters in Europe according to Wikipedia (FR); the Jewish community flourished there until the expulsion of 1492.

Baths, walls and parks
The Banys Àrabs, Romanesque baths built in 1194, owe their 'Arab' name to a 19th-century label, says Wikivoyage (EN). The wall walk, free according to Wikivoyage (FR), gives views over the city; the Gironella tower is the highest point. Devesa Park, about 40 ha, is the largest urban park in Catalonia, according to Wikipedia (FR).
Day trips and film sets
The Barri Vell and the cathedral have served as a backdrop for films and for an episode of season 6 of Game of Thrones, says Wikipedia (EN). Barcelona is an hour away by train; the Costa Brava (Blanes, Tossa de Mar, Cadaqués), the Girona Pyrenees and Púbol castle, linked to Dalí, are other outings, according to Wikivoyage (EN).
Museums and culture
Medieval art, Jewish history, cinema and architecture
The Art Museum and the treasury
The Art Museum, in the former episcopal palace next to the cathedral, holds mostly medieval and Renaissance works, says Wikivoyage (EN). The cathedral treasury shows the Tapestry of Creation and the Beatus of Liébana, according to Wikipedia (ES).
City history and Jewish history
The Museum of the History of Girona is in an 18th-century convent; the Museum of Jewish History, in the Bonastruc ça Porta centre, tells the story of the Call community, say Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (EN). We do not quote admission prices.
Cinema, Masó and archaeology
The Cinema Museum traces the history of film; Casa Masó is visited by booked guided tour, according to Wikivoyage (EN). The archaeology museum is at Sant Pere de Galligants.
Food and drink
Empordà wine, hot chocolate and Catalan cooking
Wine and cava
Girona lies within the Empordà designation of origin, with some two dozen grape varieties grown, and the region also makes cava, says Wikivoyage (EN). Wine bars in the Barri Vell serve natural and local wines.
Catalan cooking and cafés
Menus in the old town mix Catalan cooking, tapas and seasonal dishes, says Wikivoyage (EN). Hot chocolate (xocolata calenta) is a speciality of the traditional cafés. The Roca brothers run a renowned gourmet restaurant in Girona, according to Wikipedia (FR).
Where to eat
Wikivoyage (EN) finds the restaurants of Plaça de la Independència and Rambla de la Llibertat touristy and overpriced; it pays to walk a little further. We do not name businesses.
Getting around
On foot, by city bus and by bike
On foot
The old town and the new town, west of the river, are compact and largely pedestrianised, says Wikivoyage (EN). Bring good shoes: cobbles, slopes and steep steps.
Bus and bike
Nine to ten bus lines serve the districts, according to Wikivoyage (EN, ES). Girocleta, the bike-share service, is based at the bus station, and many cycle routes surround the city.
By car
A car is unnecessary and awkward in the old town, say Wikivoyage (EN, ES). It is mainly useful for trips to nearby villages and castles.
