Airport and getting into town
An airport 5 km from Arrecife, and an island best explored by car
Lanzarote-Arrecife (ACE)
Lanzarote Airport, which also carries the name of the artist César Manrique, is about 5 km from Arrecife, the capital, along the LZ-2 road, according to Wikivoyage (EN, FR). It handles budget flights from across Europe, domestic flights and inter-island services, says Wikivoyage (EN). A small bus line links the airport with Playa Honda and Arrecife about twice an hour, says Wikivoyage (ES). For the rest of the island, a rental car is the best option: roads are in good condition and it takes about 40 minutes to cross the island from north to south, according to Wikivoyage (EN).
Distances and times are approximate, from Wikivoyage (EN, FR, ES); timetables and routes change, so check them before you travel. We do not quote fares.
Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands, about 130 km from the African coast, says Wikivoyage (EN). It covers about 846 km2 and is about 58 km long, according to Wikipedia (FR, DE). It has more than 150,000 inhabitants according to the editions of Wikipedia and Wikivoyage we consulted. The time zone is Western European Time, one hour behind mainland Spain (Wikivoyage EN). Since 1993 the island has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve, according to Wikipedia (DE).
Landmarks
Green lagoon, Timanfaya, La Geria and lava coves
Lanzarote is an island of fire: the eruptions of 1730 to 1736 created the landscapes of Timanfaya, says Wikipedia (DE). The places below are illustrated; César Manrique's works, Teguise and the trips to Fuerteventura and La Graciosa are covered at the end of the section.
The El Golfo green lagoon
On the west coast, a partly collapsed crater holds a vivid green lagoon, separated from the ocean by a black sand beach. The north-west coast, exposed to the Atlantic, has the wildest surf, says Wikivoyage (EN). The red rocks and dark cliffs make one of the island's most photographed colour contrasts.

Timanfaya and the Montañas del Fuego
Timanfaya National Park is named for the first village destroyed by the eruptions of 1730. It has more than 100 volcanoes and covers a quarter of the island, says Wikivoyage (EN). You visit by bus: there is no public bus in the park, and cars can queue for more than an hour while tour coaches move faster, according to the same source.

Roads between the craters
Roads wind between ochre cones and lava fields. Easy trails such as Caldera Blanca, Pico Partido or Montaña del Cuervo are inside the park, says Wikivoyage (EN); independent hiking there is very limited, according to Wikipedia (DE).

La Geria, vines in the ash
Spared by the eruptions, the La Geria area between San Bartolomé and Yaiza grows vines in small hollows protected by half-moon stone walls that trap moisture, says Wikivoyage (EN). The volcanic ash holds the morning dew, according to Wikipedia (DE). The Malvasia grape is the most cited.

The southern coves
Sandy beaches are mainly at Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca on the more sheltered south-east coast, says Wikivoyage (EN). The Papagayo beaches in the south are renowned according to Wikipedia (FR), and the charcones, natural rock pools, are best near Playa Blanca. The tide range can reach 3 m, so take care when swimming.

César Manrique, Teguise and the north
The artist César Manrique (1919-1992) left his mark on the island: Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Río, Jardín de Cactus, the Fundación César Manrique at Tahiche and the Monument to the Peasant, say Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (FR). Teguise, the former capital, is known for its Sunday market; Haría is strikingly green in early summer.
Day trips
A ferry links Playa Blanca to Corralejo (Fuerteventura) in about 30 minutes, and another links Órzola to La Graciosa in about 30 minutes, says Wikivoyage (EN). The Cueva de los Verdes, a lava tube formed more than 3,000 years ago according to Wikipedia (DE), can be visited in the north.
Museums and culture
Manrique, contemporary art and rural culture
The Fundación César Manrique
At Tahiche, north of Costa Teguise, the foundation occupies the artist's house and studio, built into lava bubbles, with his art collection, says Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (DE). Another house-studio is in Haría.
Arrecife and the Castillo de San José
The Castillo de San José, a fortress in Arrecife, houses a museum of contemporary art, says Wikivoyage (EN). Arrecife also has a history museum in an island fortress.
Rural culture
The Casa Museo del Campesino, near the Monument to the Peasant at San Bartolomé, is devoted to local culture, say Wikivoyage (EN, ES). We do not quote admission prices.
Food and drink
Papas arrugadas, mojo, gofio and volcanic wine
Typical dishes
The cooking is Canarian: papas arrugadas, potatoes boiled in their skins in very salty water and served with mojo, say Wikivoyage (EN, DE). Mojo picón is spicy, mojo verde is milder. Gofio, a toasted-grain flour, accompanies many dishes.
Cheese and stews
Goat's cheese (queso blanco, queso de país) is the main cheese, says Wikivoyage (DE). Puchero, a stew of several meats and vegetables, is a traditional dish.
Wine and water
The La Geria vineyards cover about 2,300 ha on the island, says Wikipedia (DE). Tap water is desalinated seawater, so many people prefer bottled water, says Wikivoyage (EN).
Getting around
Rental car, buses from Arrecife and ferries
Car
A rental car is the best way to discover the island, says Wikivoyage (EN). Cars can be hired at the airport, the port and the main resorts. Taxis are plentiful.
Bus
Lines radiate from Arrecife; there is no public bus through Timanfaya National Park, says Wikivoyage (EN). For Timanfaya an organised tour is better.
Ferries and bikes
Playa Blanca to Corralejo takes about 30 minutes; Arrecife is linked to Cádiz and Huelva by ferry, says Wikivoyage (EN). Cyclists may use almost all asphalted roads.
