Forest City
London, Ontario: the green, musical city
In southwestern Ontario, roughly halfway between Toronto and Detroit and between Lake Huron and Lake Erie, London goes by the nickname The Forest City: tourism sources count more than 200 parks and green spaces and over four million trees. A university town built around Western University, it is also Canada's first UNESCO City of Music, designated in November 2021.
Not the British capital
The shared name is part of local identity. London was named in 1793 by John Graves Simcoe after the English city, and its river became the Thames, which runs through town in North and South branches meeting at the Forks.

Along the Thames
Parks, trails and Storybook Gardens
Springbank Park and Storybook Gardens
The Thames shapes the city's riverside parks and trails, which are good for walking or cycling; the Thames Valley Parkway alone runs 110 km. Springbank Park is home to Storybook Gardens, an open-air park for families built around fairy tales. Victoria Park downtown draws about a million visitors a year, and Westminster Ponds is a 200-hectare urban sanctuary with six ponds.

Heritage

Banting House
Frederick Banting lived and practised in London from July 1920 to May 1921, and woke one night in autumn 1920 with the idea that led to insulin. His house at 442 Adelaide Street North, a National Historic Site of Canada since 1997, is a museum, and the Flame of Hope next door will burn until a cure for diabetes is found.
Eldon House
The city's oldest surviving residence, built in 1834 and home to the Harris family for four generations, with gardens.
Fanshawe Pioneer Village
An open-air museum showing rural Ontario life from 1820 to 1920.
