Moncton, the Hub City of the Maritimes

Moncton is the largest city in New Brunswick, in the Petitcodiac River valley at the geographic centre of the Maritime Provinces. Its nickname, Hub City, comes from its history as a rail and road crossroads, and its motto Resurgo means "I rise again". Roughly a third of residents speak French and the city is the cultural heart of modern Acadia, a friendly, laid-back place to start a Maritimes trip.

From Le Coude to Moncton

Acadian settlers called the place Le Coude, the elbow, after the sharp bend of the river. Settlers from Pennsylvania arrived around 1766, and the name honours Lt. Col. Robert Monckton. The shipbuilding boom collapsed in the 1860s, and the Intercolonial Railway made the city its headquarters in 1871; the closure of the railway shops in the 1980s led to a second rebirth.

Dieppe and Riverview

Dieppe, next door to the east, is the largest predominantly francophone city in Canada outside Quebec according to Wikivoyage; Riverview lies across the river. Together they make up Greater Moncton, with about 145,000 people.

Roméo LeBlanc Airport, in Dieppe

YQM

Greater Moncton Roméo LeBlanc

A regional airport in Dieppe, 7.4 km east-north-east of downtown (Wikipedia). Direct flights to several major Canadian cities; Wikivoyage lists Montreal and Ottawa (about 1.5 hours each) and Toronto (2 to 2.5 hours).

Approximate times, from Wikivoyage and Wikipedia; routes change from season to season. We do not quote fares.

From the airport to town

Allow about ten minutes by taxi or rental car to downtown. Wikivoyage mentions a taxi fare of around 20 Canadian dollars, a figure to check before you travel. We could not confirm a direct city bus from the airport, so ask the airport or the city.

By road, rail or bus

From Halifax it is about 2.5 hours by car (3 hours by Maritime Bus); from Fredericton about 2 hours by car; from Saint John about 2 hours 15 minutes by coach. Via Rail's Ocean train links Halifax and Montreal with three round trips a week (about 4 hours 15 minutes from Halifax); the station is east of the centre on Main Street.

The hill where cars seem to roll uphill

Magnetic Hill is a gravity-hill optical illusion on the north-west edge of the city: put your car in neutral at the bottom and it seems to roll uphill. It became one of Moncton's best-known attractions after the Second World War, is open mainly from mid-May to early September, and is charged per car.

Around the hill

The area also holds Magnetic Hill Zoo (more than 100 species according to Wikivoyage), the Magic Mountain water park, the shops of Magnetic Hill Wharf Village and Magnetic Hill Winery, known for fruit wines and views over the city. They are about twenty minutes from the centre along Mountain Road.

Some of the highest tides in the world

Moncton is under an hour from the Bay of Fundy, known for its extreme tidal range: the water level can swing by up to 16 metres. The Petitcodiac River itself bears the mark: twice a day the incoming tide runs upstream as a tidal bore, which you can watch from Bore View Park near the centre. It was once one to two metres high; a causeway built in the 1960s shrank it, and since the gates were opened in 2010 it has partly returned. Check the posted time on site.

Hopewell Rocks

The Hopewell Rocks, or flowerpot rocks, are red sandstone sea stacks topped with fir trees, 12 to 21 metres tall. At low tide you can walk on the sea floor beneath them, and at high tide you can kayak around them. Wikivoyage suggests arriving within three hours either side of low tide and, if you can, staying for a full tide cycle. Wear footwear that can take mud, and respect the posted times: the water returns quickly.

Sandstone cliffs at low tide

Along the coast, red sandstone cliffs, sea caves and pebble beaches are revealed as the tide drops. Fundy National Park and the coastal road offer more hikes, about half an hour beyond Hopewell.

Distance and logistics

Allow about 45 minutes by road from Moncton to the Hopewell Rocks, a little more for Fundy National Park. The trip is hard without a car: rent one or book an organised excursion.

From the Great Upheaval to the Acadian renaissance

PlaceWhat you discover
Musée acadien (Université de Moncton)About 35,000 objects and photographs on every aspect of Acadian life, from 1604 to today, with a temporary exhibition room.
Resurgo Place / Moncton MuseumThe history of the city and region, from the Mi'kmaq to the Acadians, plus the Transportation Discovery Centre (shipbuilding, railways, aviation).
Treitz HausA heritage building dated to about 1769, one of the oldest in the city, near Bore View Park.
Monument-Lefebvre (Memramcook)A national historic site built in 1896-97, a symbol of the Acadian Renaissance, about 30 minutes from the city.
MR21, Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption cathedralAn interpretation centre inside what Wikivoyage calls the only digital cathedral in Atlantic Canada.

The land is the ancestral territory of the Mi'kmaq, and Acadians settled the area from the 17th century. The Great Upheaval of 1755, when the British deported the Acadians, followed by their return and cultural revival, shaped today's Moncton. Museum opening hours vary a lot by season: check them before you go.

Landmarks and heritage

The Capitol Theatre, described by Wikivoyage as the oldest theatre in New Brunswick, the Wood Building and Treitz Haus are heritage sites; a covered bridge from 1983 stands at Magnetic Hill. The Festival international du cinéma francophone en Acadie, founded in 1987, also enlivens the city.

Around Moncton: beaches, capitals and islands

Shediac and warmer water

Shediac, which calls itself the lobster capital of the world, is about 30 km north-east on Route 15. Parlee Beach, on the Northumberland Strait, is the busiest; water-quality advisories are sometimes posted, so check them. Aboiteau Beach at Cap-Pelé is quieter.

Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia

Wikivoyage places Fredericton, the Bay of Fundy, Saint John and Prince Edward Island within a two-hour drive; Halifax is about two and a half hours away according to the same source. Prince Edward Island is about 100 km away, across the Confederation Bridge.

Hiking and nature

Irishtown Nature Park (about 890 hectares) is the largest urban nature park in the area, and the Dobson Trail runs 58 km from Riverview to Fundy National Park; the 1-km Mill Creek loop makes a short outing. Poley Mountain, near Sussex (about 50 minutes), offers biking in summer and skiing in winter.

Murals, riverside trail and neighbourhood life

Downtown is compact and walkable: a self-guided trail takes in more than 50 murals, the riverfront trail runs to the Champlain Place mall and across to Riverview, and Centennial Park has trails, an urban beach and playgrounds. Irishtown is good for birdwatching. Evenings in the pubs stay relaxed.

Shows and nights out

The Capitol Theatre and the Empress Theatre stage concerts and shows; pubs such as Old Triangle and St. James' Gate offer music and draught beer. As in any city, stay alert downtown at night and do not leave valuables visible in your car.

Poutine, seafood and Acadian cooking

Local specialities

Acadian cooking rests on potatoes, fish and seafood: lobster, crab, scallops and clams. Dishes found across Acadian regions include fricot (a stew), meat pie and poutine râpée, a boiled potato dumpling quite unlike the Quebec poutine of fries, cheese curds and gravy. Maple syrup is everywhere.

Where to eat and drink

Wikivoyage names Catch 22 (seafood), Little Louis' Oyster Bar and Tide & Boar Gastropub, Cafe Archibald (crêpes) and Hynes (diner food). Pump House Brewery, a craft brewery, is known for its stout and brick-oven pizza. Irish pubs on Main Street pour draught beer too, and the city has Korean, Indian, Vietnamese and Japanese restaurants.

Markets and products

Local produce is sold at the downtown farmers' market and in shops of Maritime-made goods such as maple syrup, jams and fruit wines.

Bus, taxi, bike and car

In town

Moncton is easy to navigate: the main roads are the Trans-Canada, Wheeler Boulevard and Mountain Road, which leads to Magnetic Hill. Codiac Transit serves Greater Moncton seven days a week, with a limited timetable on Sundays and public holidays; check times on its app. Buses have bike racks.

Taxi, bike, car

Taxis take cards and cash. The city is flat and pleasant by bike, with limited bike lanes but fine trails, including the riverfront trail. For Hopewell Rocks, Shediac and Fundy National Park, a rental car is the most practical option.

Between cities

Maritime Bus coaches link Moncton with Halifax, Fredericton, Saint John and Charlottetown (with a transfer) from the terminal at the Via Rail station.

A mid-range budget for Atlantic Canada

Price level

Moncton is cheaper than Montreal or Toronto, but summer accommodation and seafood restaurants still weigh on the budget; lodging runs from hostels to large downtown hotels. We do not publish prices because we could not cross-check them and they change quickly.

Flights and alerts

The flight is the most variable cost. SniperAir tracks fares to YQM, compares them with the route's history and alerts you, but does not sell or book tickets. Halifax (YHZ) and Fredericton (YFC) are other entry points worth watching.

Precautions

At low tide, respect the tide times posted at Hopewell Rocks; the water returns quickly. In winter, bring warm clothing and suitable tyres if you drive.

Four seasons, with the sea nearby

Summer

Warm and humid, with highs around 25 degrees and sometimes above 30; modest rain, especially in late July and August. The best time for beaches, Magnetic Hill and Hopewell Rocks.

Autumn

Mild until late October, with autumn colours and fewer visitors at the rocks. The first snow usually comes in late November.

Winter

Cold but often sunny, with highs a few degrees below freezing and the odd storm dropping 20 to 30 cm of snow, often mixed with freezing rain. November to mid-January is the stormiest period.

Spring

Often late: ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence cools onshore winds. Days lengthen, but seasonal attractions only open from mid-May.

Climate figures

Moncton has a humid continental climate (Dfb): more continental than maritime in summer and winter, with the sea mainly tempering spring and autumn (Wikipedia, Wikivoyage). Extremes of -37.8 °C (1948) and 37.8 °C (1935) have been recorded. Check forecasts before you go.
